Sox Lineup

Ozuna, 3B … Iguchi, 2B … Everett, DH … Konerko, 1B … Rowand, CF … Dye, RF … Uribe, SS … Widger, C … Anderson, LF … Buehrle, LHP.

Pitching Matchup

Tonight’s series finale features a matchup of two of the top left-handed pitchers in baseball, 2004 American League Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, and Mark Buehrle, who currently ranks second in the AL with a 2.99 ERA.  Santana is 9-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 12 road starts in 2005, while Buehrle is 8-1 with a 1.96 ERA in 12 starts at U.S. Cellular Field.

Paulie

Tonight will be Paul Konerko’s 1,000th game with the White Sox.

Double Duty

Double Duty Radcliffe had to be proud today as he looked down on his funeral.  Many baseball greats, from the Major Leagues and the Negro League, attended this morning’s funeral at the beautiful Chicago Apostolic Church.  Duty will be missed at U.S. Cellular Field.

Greatest American Hero

Players were dying with laughter last night when Brian Anderson’s first plate appearance was greeted with the theme song from "Greatest American Hero."  Players claim the resemblance is uncanny.

Timo

I was all set to write something witty about Timo’s clutch double last night, but it took most of today to lose the lump in the pit of my stomach from the loss.  Last night was tough in that it had all the makings of a 2005 White Sox victory (rally, great bullpen outings, etc.) before Cuddyer’s blast in the ninth.  Both teams have outstanding bullpens, which made for very tense extra innings.  We just blew too many chances and it finally caught up with us.  Tough loss.

who in here would like to see Timo go down to the minors when podsednik comes back instead of Anderson. Dont get me wrong i Love Timo but hes not the same player he was last year for some reason.

I see what you are saying lilj but the first person who needs to go down is Adkins. Once again, he came in and gave up a ton of runs. As soon as I saw his ERA of 6.75 last night I knew he was going to blow an outstanding effort by our bullpen. Kudos to Jenks who turned in the performance we were looking for. I couldn’t sleep last night I was so upset about the game!!

thanks, would u agree then that they should sent him down and bring Brandong McCarthy up to give him experience so that next year when they trade Jose Contreras or whatever they can put him in the rotation with experience and all? About Brian Anderson i was thinking and maybe he should go down to Triple A for a while, until the Sept.1 callups then whoever plays better between him and Timo gets to stay with the big league team. But then again Ken Williams is really eager to give up a lot of prospects for Griffey Junior so i wouldn’t be suprised if the White Sox dont have Brandong and Brian Anderson after Sept 1 :-(

Brandon McCarthy and Brian Anderson are both on the 40 – Man roster. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this means that since we are beyond the July 31st trading deadline, both Anderson and McCarthy would have to clear waivers to be traded anywhere (unless we wanted to trade them to the team that claims them). Considering claiming either one of them off of waivers would be a ZERO risk and all reward proposition, I find it highly unlikely that either would escape being claimed – especially by teams with a worse record than the Reds. Of course, if I’m incorrect then this is all a moot point.

Don’t worry. Here come the Yankees! Does anyone else think they’re showing a lot of similar cracks? I’m most worried about the way both teams are losing leads. At least the White Sox have pitching. The Yankee starters and bullpen look like they’re playing that old game of Cowboys and Indians. Kids don’t play that anymore, and there are REASONS.

Well, maybe it serves them right (not the players, but rather those who could intervene)in one small way. Both teams gave up the same 2 great pitchers, whose careers haven’t recovered yet: David Wells and Esteban Loaiza. I was so excited when Loaiza came to NYY. I couldn’t believe it. He adjusted fast enough to NYY pressure to get his 100th win, and then they stuck him in the bullpen and lost the ALCS to Boston. Now, if he had been allowed to pitch more innings against Boston, or, perhaps, been given a start, things might have been different for the Yankees. I ran into his cousin on a Flatbush Brooklyn subway platform when we were both heading up for what turned out to be the Yanks’ last game of 2004. I never got her name, we just happened to start talking — She was so nice, and even checked to see if she could find a couple extra seats for us. There weren’t any, but the blow of the night was somehow humanized. The Yankees’ loss of David Wells, twice, and now to the RED Sox, is just too much karma to untangle now. OUCH. Over the years, when I’ve visited family in Chicago, I’ve tried to correlate my trips with Wells’ and Loaiza’s spot/s in the White Sox rotation, but it just didn’t work, especially after Wells got hurt again. Too bad.

Regarding Timo, I saw him in NYC before the Mets “disappeared” him. I really liked his speed, and those dazzling plays that just popped out of him. Maybe, like lilj suggested, he could use some time in the minors. I don’t know much about the White Sox farm system. Do players come back better? With the Yankees, it varies. Regarding pitchers, it seems like only the starters that never got started this season are being given minor league rehab starts. Joe Torre acknowledged that Kevin Brown had to do his rehab starts against major league opponents. Not only that, but he was expected to keep the team in the game despite a teamwide hitting slump. Because he was there, broadcasters couldn’t keep themselves from giving him 2 or 3 losses to prove he was done. Maybe he doesn’t get along with Michael Kay, I don’t know. But that bothered me. On the other extreme, Steve Trachsel -NYM RHP- is openly appreciative of the help he gets when he goes down to the farm, and they don’t push him. If the White Sox minors can help Timo without deflating his spirit, maybe it’s worth a try. Has anyone asked him what he thinks would help most?

Well, at least the White Sox and Yankees can’t lose again before playing here Friday. See you Saturday 8-20-05, 12:20, Section 524.

Thanks for the input Sharon but if we wanted to hear all about the Yankees (and Red Sox) we can just turn on ESPN. Try posting on the Yankees blog. They will be more interested in what you are saying. Not that you don’t have good points, but I am so sick over the last 5 games that to read about the Yanks ticks me off…….

Lilj, I think Spider is right….those two would have to get through waivers and I don’t see the White Sox doing that. I am not even sure bringing up McCarthy is that great of an idea right now. he got sent back down b/c he was shelled when he pitched for us. He’s young…..I would give him time to mature. But, in the meantime, get Atkins out of there. I am going to be irritated every time I see the poor guy.

Anyway, not much left in the season. Feel good that we lost 5 in a row but are still up by 11. Has anyone noticed that we started skidding b/c we never have the same line-up anymore? Ever since the All-Star break we have been giving guys lots of rest…..maybe use a consistent line-up for a week or two just to get some wins.

Geaux Sox!!!!!

My frustration is overwhelming. We’re still 11 games up, but I can’t help it. Could the loss of Pods be that detrimental? It can be a slippery slope, so I’m hoping we can turn this around. It’s unfortunate we have the Yankees this weekend, but it would be nice to turn things around against them.

Poozeyman, you have a point about the lineup, but it’s more than that. I think maybe guys are just getting tired. That’s probably why Ozzie is trying to rest people. The last thing you want is guys to get tired and then injured.

We were great in the first half, with luck on our side. Now it seems we’re good – like many, many other teams, and luck is on their side. We need to start showing strength against playoff contention teams if anyone wants to believe our first half of the season was real. I will bow my head and pray to the baseball gods.

Have faith. I do.

I agree. Brandong did kinda get beat up but I think it was because he couldn’t consintrate sine his name was being named in the whole A.J Burnett deal. Same thing is going on right now with Aaron Rowand , hes had 13 K’s in his last 40 At Bats. All because of the whole Ken Griffey Rumors. sorry if some of my theories are wrong i just dont get how the whole waiver thing works.

It would seem that the boys in the dugout have lost focus ever since the installation of their new bench. Perhaps sitting along the back wall and watching the game is a better path to victory than the perspective that affords players the ability to scope the crowd for Chicagoland’s loveliest fans. For the record, prior to the time the bench was installed (on or about July 19th) the Sox were roughly 31-15 at home; since that time, they have a home record of 5-10.

I have every confidence in Ozzie’s ability to get these guys on track. But, until then, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to mark this bench off-limits.

This team is in serious trouble and has me wondering why I spent a lot of money on tickets down the stretch. I’m sick of everyone thinking that Podsednik is the second coming of Rickey Henderson….he’s not. I personally think he stinks. Gets picked off every other time he reaches base. with a low OP as it is…its pretty pathetic. Whats even more pathetic is the sox fans who voted this guy onto the all star team and they didnt even bother to vote for the Big Hurt in 2003 when he actually had numbers deserving of an all star apperance-especially in his home park. I was at wednesday nites game and the crowd gave buerhle a standing ovation when he got pulled. I boo’d him. why would you give someone a standing O who gave up 5 runs to a twins team that didnt include Hunter, Jones and Shannon Stewart? Hawk asks “where would ken griffey Jr. play?” Last I checked none of the current sox starting lineup is a future hall of famer who is having a great year. YO KENNY! GET IT DONE WE NEED GRIFFEY!!!!!!!

Do us all a favor kenwo and sell your tickets on stubhub so some positive fans can take your place and support the team. Podsednik electrifies this team like no one else. The impact of his absence is obvious. To say he stinks, you must have been watching Corey Paterson all this time. Just fyi, the White Sox are the guys in black. Podsednik has 12 more steals than any other major leaguer. He only started getting picked off in any significant fashion when he was running with a pulled leg muscle. Why don’t you try that. On to Buerhle. People applauded Buerhle to support him, because they believe in him, because they know he’ll bounce back. What good are you doing anyone by boing him? Maybe you don’t know yourself very well. Wanna see what a Cubs fan looks like? Go look in the mirror.

Buerhle has had one good outing since being named the All-Star starter-which was also a sham Garland deserved that call. Podsednik electrifies the team? If a.280 average 19 rbi’s and mediocre at best outfield play electrifies you then thats wonderful. I used Rickey Henderson’s name in my previous posting….heck Podsednik isn’t even the next One Dog Lance Johnson. I’m glad that he will come up short of Rudy Law’s record 77 SB’s. I don’t understand all the love for Brian Anderson either. After 2 games I have decided that he is the next Jeff Abbott. I’ve gone to 35 plus games every year since ’83..the current team isn’t better than the 83,93,94 teams. Its a clone of the 2000 team….3 and out unless something is done!!!!!

Seriously kenwo, are you sure you aren’t a Cubs fan? You definately sound as dumb as them…of course you go 3 and out unless you get something done! And comparing this team to the 2000 team?? I think you are sleeping at those games you supposedly go to, or drinking too much beer cause this team is nothing like that, not when they are playing winning ball. We need Podsednik and he deserved to be an All-Star because he is the catalyst, when he is on the pitchers worry about him and make mistake pitches. So what if he’s not batting .300 and who cares about his RBI’s? he’s not meant to drive in runs otherwise he’d be batting middle of the order. And the fact that he’s still blowing away the league in SB’s despite his injury shows just how good he is at stealing bases in this age of the HR. As for Brian Anderson, how bout you give the kid some time before giving up on him? You probably thought Konerko was done for a couple years ago and that Aaron Rowand would never be a good CF. Do us all a favor and read up on baseball a bit, get to know the game before you post again.

They are like the 2000 team because it is a team that started out fast just in time to fizzle out by the end of the season and limp into the playoffs. personally i think the 2000 team was stronger with valentin, lee and ordonez. I dont think konerko is all that great now. big deal he hits a few home runs, he cant drive in the big runs. I live and die with the white sox…i like some of the players-Iguchi, pierzinski, dye, uribe, marte, pollite, everett, thomas, widger, garland, el duque, garcia….i just think they need to make a move to land griffey jr. or it will be a disappointing october for all of us. as for that deal with the brewers- we got hosed. carlos lee will be a star for 10 more seasons. people will tell me that it allowed them to sign iguchi and pierzinski (which were great moves). i tell them BS they could kept lee and signed them two guys and we would be a lot better off today than we are now.

When you are a fan, you like your team through thick and thin, you don’t boo them when they are down. Instead you cheer them to show support regardless. Bandwagon fans are the ones who only love a team when they are winning. Kenwo, if you aren’t going to games to support the team, don’t go at all and leave the seats for fans who appreciate their effort even if they lose.

you sound like the cubs fan….cheering your team no matter what. i show up every year. I have been there the last 4 years with 15,000 others. there were a lot of empty seats back then…where were all of you guys? if they play like garbage they deserve to be boo’d. yankees fans boo jeter if he’s playing bad. its time you people aren’t just happy about making the playoffs. the rest of the league isn’t that great. this is our chance to win and I feel it slipping away. so when buerhle goes out there and gets rocked by a hunter,jones,stewart-less twins team…it makes me nervous. to quote hulk hogan “whats he gunna do” when he faces the red sox in the playoffs? whats he gunna do when garrett anderson and vladdy guerrero are standing in the box. get torched for 6 runs in 6 innings is what.he deserves to be boo’d the way he’s been pitching the last 2 months.

Just because they could have kept Lee and still signed Iguchi and Pierzinski doesn’t mean they would have. To say we got hosed on that deal is a pretty stupid thing to say. What would you rather the Sox do, keet the same team that lives and dies by the HR and watch as they lose the division to the Twins again? We’ve lost the past 4 seasons, this year we’re 30 games over .500 with a 10 1/2 game lead, and you’re complaining that we’re not enough like the old team? Get a clue.

While I do believe that Kenwo4life is a little too “anti” right now, I do think he is correct on a number of points.

1. A True Sox fan will boo and let the team/players “have it” when they are not doing the job. Only sheep-like Cub fans cheer for their team no matter what they are doing. That’s why the Cubbies sell out every year and the Tribune never really go out on a limb to get the players they need to win. They know the Sheep will come no matter what! True Sox fans (not 2005 bandwagon jumpers) should know this!

2. The Sox do need to make a move. There is no way they can win in the playoffs with Timo playing everyday and A.J. batting third. They NEED a bat like Griffey now. Hopefully, Pod will come back strong, but we cannot count on it.

3. While it is too soon to say that the 2005 Sox are falling apart like the 2000 Sox, fans have gotta be worried. Other than the NY series, we have not played our game of pitching, defense, and clutch hitting since the all-star break. KW must do something so that we don’t continue the history of ’83,’93, and ’00 complete playoff failures.

Look, Kenwo4life, you’re entitled to your opinion, and if you have a problem with certain players, great. We’re at a frustrating point in the season right now and it certainly appears that we need some help (maybe from Griffey) if we want to be serious playoff contenders. I’m also frustrated with this team of late. One point that comes to mind was the perception through out the first half that the Sox were getting lucky and were a fluke. I’m confident our play will turn around, but if it doesen’t, the clowns on ESPN will say, “see, the central is all about the Tribe”.

kenwo, you’re obviously a long time frustrated Sox fan, as am I, but try and find that faith again.

Let me shift gears here, this is what really bothers me. Steevyniu, I agree with all your points, and no offense here, but I HATE it when Sox fan’s talk about the Cubs – at all. The more Sox fans talk about the Cubs, the more we prove we’re the second class team. Leaders DON’T CARE about loosers, even if most of the city APPEARS to be on their side. Quit worrying about how many fans they have and what their fans are like, it makes us sound defensive, and that’s not necessary. Let’s just concentrate on the Sox.

And while I’m on this little rant, I understand entertainment during a game for families, etc. but is “the wave” really necessary? The Sox “entertainment” people actually try and get people to do the wave with that thing they play over the p.a. system “Look, here comes the wave”. You want to play loud music, fine, you want “cute” little races on the jumbotron, great, you want to throw free garbage into the stands, fine I’ll even accept that, but THE WAVE??? Can I please, please, please just watch a baseball game.

To Themurph28, I think you should reread my post. Where do I worry about how many fans they have? My reference to the Cubs was to rebut other posters comments that Sox fans should support Sox players “no matter what”. As I stated, this is a Cub fan ideal, and true Sox fans should criticize their team and/or players when it is necessary. Do you disagree?

As for the wave, this is simply due to the fact that the Sox are “the thing” to do right now. Thus, many people that attend the games are not hardcore baseball fans and don’t know that the Wave is looked down upon. It is just one of the necessary evils of having a winning ballclub. As far as I am concerned, they can do the wave all they want as long as the Sox keep playing deep into October.

It’s baseball for crying out loud! So the White Sox have lost a few games, big deal. You want to boo, you want to cheer, you want to do the wave, if you have paid for your ticket you’re entitled to any or all of those things. Would any of you have taken a 10.5 game lead in the division on August 19, 2005 mind you a game and a half better than the Sox were at the break at the start of this year. You better believe it! Stop whining, stop getting nervous, stop expecting more than this team ever promised to do and just enjoy it! It’s baseball for crying out loud!

All I gotta say is “where is he gonna play?”

Give me a break Hawk. Stop your BS and let DJ sing another song.

Maybe I’m nuts, but I saw a very telling stat in the agate in the Tribune today(Friday) that leaves me feeling that this “best record in baseball”thing isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.The stat was this. Since 1990,in the last 15 completed seasons (discounting ’94, of course)the team that had the best record in the regular season only won the entire post-season(LDS,ALCS,NLCS,or
World Series ONCE…that was

that Yankee team that rolled over the opposition about four

or so years ago…So, what say

you,Sox fans… If you saw that stat and believe in such things, do you think that it

may not be so bad to NOT have

the best overall record,or not?

Who cares about best record, as long as the White Sox win the World Series!!!

Excuse me , i just heard that the white sox are having a team meeting. Does anybody have any idea what this is all about? I heard that it was only a players meeting, ozzie and all the coachers were excluded from it. if this is true do u think its good or bad

teams have players only meetings all the time. its just to get the focus back on winning instead of losing. but unless ken griffey jr is in that meeting it wont affect the way they are set up to get trounced by the bronx bombers. im going to the game tonight hopefully it will be a white sox winner but i dont think so!

I know what u mean im a huge sox fan but i dont think they’re gonna win this serious but i honestly think that all these rumors bout bring griffey is hurting the team especially aaron rowand. I know that even if they do bring him hes still gonna be our CF but for some reason hes slumpin right now. come on 15 strike-outs in his last 30-40 At bats . by the way hope u see the white sox win tonight kenwo ;-)

what a terrible game friday night and saturday afternoon. this team is awful. the tribe are coming. guillen is supposed to be firey? he looks dead himself. get tossed out of the game for god sakes the team needs a jump start. maybe a bench clearing brawl. what is kenny williams doing? sitting on his hands when this team needs a trade. just baseball as usual in chicago. konerko said “id rather lose in the first round with this team than make a trade”. WHAT!! he should be traded for saying that. id rather see them play dye at first and call up borchard for the outfield than see geoff blum play there ever again. the tribe is coming. something needs to be done, and ozzie and kenny are sitting on there hands. what a shame.
