Random Thoughts about Yesterday
As we (Commissioner Selig, Jerry Reinsdorf, Kenny Williams and I) stood on the field at about 12:20 yesterday, we discussed who was standing where and who was doing what during the ring ceremony.
I tapped Kenny and said. "Stop for a minute and think about the conversation we are having right now."
Great to see Aaron Rowand, Willie Harris, Timo Perez and El Duque. Great to hear the crowd response to the four. It was bittersweet — there were smiles and tears — but it meant a lot to us to and them that they were at our ballpark yesterday.
After the game, employees received their rings from Jerry in a private reception. Lots of smiles and lots of tears there as well. So many White Sox employees have been with the team for decades, that this moment was so sweet.
Afterward, I took my family to dinner on Taylor Street. A table of three Sox fans (all guys) sat next to us. I was giving my wife a hard time, saying that a ring like this might get the attention of women at bars. At just that moment, the guys at the next table leaned over and asked to see my ring. They congratulated me on the season and thanked the organization for the great year. Then they went back to their table.
"Yeah," my wife said sarcastically with a smile on her face. "I am sure it will work with women, too."
See the site for more information, but we are going to raffle three authentic World Series rings for fans in order to raise money for Chicago White Sox Charities. Sales begin at the ballpark and online, on April 14. Tickets are $20 and we will cap sales at 100,000 (raising $2 million), meaning at worst you have three chances in 100,000.
This is being announced today.
