Odds & Ends

Bob Beghtol, our director of media relations, is "proudly" wearing a vintage Marquette basketball jersey today as payoff for a bet he lost when "his" Badgers dropped a regular-season game to the in-state rivals.

Funny story from yesterday … I was grabbing lunch in the lunchroom (where else?).  Dale Torborg and Alexi Ramirez were sitting at a table behind me eating.  Jerry Reinsdorf came in and said hello to Alexi, who, you could tell, had no idea who it was.

Dale tried to explain, through a mix of English/Spanish and sign language, who Jerry was.

I turned to them and said, "Jeffe.  Grand Jeffe." (Note: I know NO Spanish except what I’ve learned over the years in the clubhouse, most of which probably gets me slapped in mixed company).

Alexi’s eyes lighted up and he walked over to Jerry to thank him.

Jim Thome had a big smile on his face after his home run yesterday.

"You just have to get your work in and hopefully good things will happen to you," he said againa and again.

It’s a bit cool today, high in the mid 50s with chances of afternoon thunderstorms.  Tomorrow is a bit warmer with less of a chance for rain.  Tuesday returns to the 70s and Wednesday to the 80s.

We decided to take a pass on Shingo Takatsu for our Class AAA bullpen.  There are quite a few arms competing for jobs already at Charlotte.\

It was a bit weird to see Neal and Shingo yesterday.  Felt like 2005.

Scott,

I hope that feeling (of 2005) continues! I am optimistic about this years club. Then again, I am optimistic every year – ah spring!

Go Sox!

For all you youngsters out there…(Sorry, I was channeling Stone Pony there…)
“Grand Jeffe” simply means “Big Chief”…the only reason I know that is from reading Stuart Kaminsky’s books about the detective Abe Lieberman..one of Lieberman’s main sources of information is a Spanish ganglord who calls him “Jeffe”…

(It’s fascinating the stuff you learn when you read…some people ought to try it some times…)

As to yesterday…First of all, I apologize about not viewing the game…I was at a birthday party for my great nephew(1 year old this Tuesday…)…So I saw the highlight on the newscasts…

Let me just say this about what transpired…

“Sock-It” Thome was in mid-season form on that CLOUT (all caps, because that kind of home run deserves it…As the old saying goes, that one would have been out of any park…including Yosemite…)…For the Flubs sake, unfortunately… so was Cotts…

As to passing on Takatsu-san…His act dried up quickly, didn’t it?

Which reminds me…is Damaso Marte still in the majors?

There’s another one whose career went down the proverbial drain in a hurry…

As to kenwo’s question from yesterday(I think it was his…could be wrong…)

Any organization who wants Dewon Day…can have him…

And that goes for Doris Day, Dennis Day, Lorraine Day…and all the other Days of Our Lives…

Dewon Day should thank his lucky stars that he is in a business where mediocrity is sometimes rewarded with big money…out of desperation…

I just checked back to yesterday’s blog…and kenwo responded to trading Day for Cotts…
And I repeat…if there is an organization out there who is that desperate for pitching that they want to trade for Day…

Kenny, go ahead and bleed them dry…because they deserve it…

I forgot to mention former one-time Cardinal,Cub and long time Montreal infielder Clarence “Boots” Day in my summary of the Days…
Now I can sleep tonight…

Actually Damaso Marte had a very successful 2007 season. He threw 45 innings struck out 51 only walked 18 had an ERA of 2.38 and was 2-0 for the Pirates. A lot better than the likes of Macdougal, thornton, aardsma, sisco, day, logan, bukvich and any other goofball white sox reliever this side of jenks.

throw cotts into that group as well. meanwhile sisco just gave up the tie as i type this. some things never change.

Where did pitcher #54, Ohka, who pitched the 5th and 6th, come from? Ozzie should have left him in. I got that sinking feeling when Sisco started, and my gut feeling was right. We shouldn’t have lost this one.

Ohka is an invitee with a era of 5.79 which still beats Sisco’s of 8.36. Should have left him in.

Faith and begorrah, my lads and lassies…On this St Patrick’s Day…(and NOT Dewon Day)I have nothing but this to say about Mr Sisco…
What more can you say after you say that Andrew was, I believe, a teammate of “Space Mountain” MacDougal in KC…

And I also believe that one of his first major league appreances was against the White Sox…and I think he got walloped…

So, yes, me boyos and girlos(???),young Sisco should be driven out of Tucson, just like St Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland…

Besides, aren’t they just about set for the last bullpen spot, between Masset and Wasserman?

If I had a say in it, based on what he did last season, my choice would be Wasserman…

Masset can pitch multiple innings for some other organization…

Seems harsh, but those kinds of decisions are just that…

By the way, just a reminder to the folks who are running the system that puts this out into the Internet…
As I just looked over my entry,I noticed the time stamp of 11:28 AM… I looked at my watch and it said 12:28 PM…

We just changed the clocks last week, moving them up and hour…

Didn’t you guys get the memo?

Just wondering…

TQ, we’re also putting cover sheets on all of our TPS Reports.

kr…good think I wasn’t drinking anything…I would have certainly spit it out all over my laptop screen. I love that movie!! -Dawn

Oh, this is too good – I’m in the superb company of Sox fans who also love “Office Space”!

I love it!!! – Peggy
