Tonight’s Lineup

OC, SS; BA, CF; Q, LF; JD, RF; Thome, DH; PK, 1B; Ramirez, 2B; Fields, 3B; Hall, C.  Richard pitching.

Back Home

I am back in Chicago after spending the weekend in La Jolla, Calif at the Surf Cup youth soccer tournament, so I’ve been a little out of the loop lately (save the pun …)

I “watched” the first few innings last night on whitesox.com from the airport, but slammed the computer shut on Mourneau’s home run.

Good to hear from you Scott. Hopefully whatever kid of yours was in the tourney did well/won. Yes, last nights game was a stinker. Tonight will be better. Go Sox ’08…. j.k.

Welcome Back Scott! You have been sorely missed.

As for blog night, I ordered my tickets right when Scott first announced the date. I have not gotten my tickets yet. Has anyone else received theirs???

I was going to post earlier, but the servers I was working with were slower than PK and AJ COMBINED…

I have compiled a list of those of you whom I will be contacting soon to give you the 411 on the new situation regarding off-the-blog-site correspondence…

As to last night’s debacle…

1) Memo to Mark Buehrle: If you are going to keep your pitches up consistently to a team that plays in a bandbox and KNOWS what pitches are coming (I don’t know HOW, but I think they DO…), you are going to get KILLED… case in point, last night…

2) Memo to Ozzie: I don’t give a rat’s rear aperture (hi, Dawn) about the feelings and the pysche of your players… PK is 12 for 58 since coming back off the DL… He is KILLING the team, no matter where you bat him in the order… For the good of the team and for the sake of all of our blood pressures… BENCH HIM until he gets his head out of his rear aperture (hi again, Dawn) and decides to stop feeling sorry for himself… You could put BA in CF, and perhaps move Fields over to play 1b, with Uribe at 3b… because Nick the Swish is oh-for-Detroit and Minnesota so far…

Just a couple of suggestions…

TQ (accept NO substitutes…)

TQ – what’s the deal with posting 4x the same post?

-

Marie – you are going to blog night – Are any of the other girls going?

Jen

Just read this story –

-
HUNTLEY, Ill. — McHenry County authorities say three Chicago Cubs fans face felony battery charges after allegedly beating a Chicago White Sox fan so badly he lost his right eye.

The men are accused of beating 32-year-old Robert Steele of Gurnee during a 2-year-old girl’s Sesame Street-themed birthday party.

Police said Monday the men were drinking alcohol at the July 19 party and taunting Steele.

Wow, a quadruple post. I think that’s a record.

Marie: I ordered my blog tickets and offered the option of printing them from my computer. So I did get mine. (Jen, that should answer your question as to whether any other gals are going!)

Scott: Hope you enjoyed La Jolla. It’s a neat little town. Did you find time to play 18 at Torrey Pines while you were there?

I’m getting ready to tune in for round 2. Let’s hope this one’s not a knockout like last night. Let’s Go Sox!!!

Marie, I got my ticket via my computer also….. Looking forward to meeting you all in a few days, now go Sox…. j.k.

Maria –

Thanks for the reminder….I completely forgot I had my tickets e-mailed to me as well. I had them safely tucked away in one of my e-mail folders and completely forgot. Thank goodness you reminded me!

Jen, there you have it…Maria and Marie are attending. That shouldn’t be too confusing!

GO SOX…let get’ em tonight!!

Marie (with an e)

Glen Perkins??? And he has a decent record too. Do we stand a chance???? Go White Sox ’08… j.k.

That’s taking advantage of what the defense gives you. Good job of getting into third by OC of that fly to center. Keep it up… j.k.

ok girls, I’ll need some pics sent to me via email of the whole gang, deepintheheart I’m a bit far to travel for a game!

Hope this game goes as planned, nearly thought about not ‘watching’ but couldn’t bring myself not to, at least not yet.

Hope I’m on that ‘list’ of your offsite correspondants TQ…. can’t forget me can you… not this time anyhow! :)

Glad to see a new post up here. Was wondering how long it would be a “Beautiful Wednesday”. Yes, Wednesdays are better than Mondays, but still, I would’ve preferred it to be a “beautiful saturday” all that time.

Through three; so far so good. More runs please…… j.k.

Question: Why aren’t more hitters allowed to swing on a 3-0 pitch? Usually down the center to grab a strike, and almost always better than the next offering. Why?… Now hold ‘em in the bottom of 4….j.k.

Way to go, BA!!! Oh yeah!!!

Good job by Clayton Richard, after a replay of a pickoff throw? by Paulie… Sorry, I don’t usually rag on one of our players. I’m just glad that no run(s) scored…. go Sox… j.k.

Funny, i read maria’s comment about good job BA. That was before he hit his dinger on mlb… Way to go BA… j.k.

Sorry, JK. I’ll try not to spoil it for you!

OK, we have to get these runs back. My high hopes are falling……….Come on Sox, get those bats going again.

Whoops and Too bad. Richard was cruising and then….. O.K. Back to work guys. Win this game…. j.k.

Ok, any more questions about Ozzie and Cooper being crappy in-game managers? why was the kid kept in the game….oh gee. he hadn’t pitched 6 innings yet…..and what the hell is JD doing in right? That ball should have been caught. Once again, the guys blow it for the kid. I feel sorry for him.

Let’s hope Ozzie and Cooper didn’t cost us the game.

pitful managing of the pitching.

Clayton Richard has no one to blame but himself. You walk these guys and they will score.

Sox got a few solid inning from the kid that should have been enough, you protect a guy after that effort , you do not throw him to the wolves.

House of Horrors? Our pitcher gets hit by a ball and they score 5 runs. Their pitcher gets hit and we get three outs… a lot of bad luck, me thinks… go Sox…. j.k.

Richard literally threw himself to the wolves 1-2 count on 3 guys, walked 2 and gave up the a double. Make a damn pitch!

And to underscore the point 1 more time…..they scored 5 damn runs and Cooper didn’t even so much as go out to the damn mound to calm the kid down! NOT ONCE!!! When we make changes in the off season, Cooper has got to go…..and remember if JD catches that more than catchable ball, we’re still up 4-2……..It’s not the kids fault JD didn’t make that play………

oh and another stroke of genius…let’s pitch hit for brian who hit a home run tonight with nick 0 for this road trip swisher……

I’ll be at blog night too and taking plenty of pictures as I promised Peggy I would –so everyone primp up for the night!!

Jen, my tickets came as an attachement with my confirmation as well so look for an attachment on your confirmation e-mail.

We can still pull this one out…c’mon boys!!

We can pull this game out, but that sinking lost feeling looks like it’s taking hold of our guys again… Come on White Sox…. make it happen… j.k.

tick tock tick tock…. time is running out…. God, I hate this!

I say it’s time to remove the “C” designation from Konerko, this team is taking on his whining attitude. He never wanted it anyway.

Put a fork in em, Matt Thorton joins the ranks of Logan and Massett.

jesus christ they come out get a nice lead and then proceed to give it up. i don’t care if the bases were loaded they can’t give in to morneau there. if he walks he walks- you still have the lead. to let him bomb one to right makes no sense at all. this one is in the books the way they are acting out there. i just hope we can get one win this series now.

Unless I’ve lost count, that is 13 straight games our bullpen has given up at least one run…. Not Good… j.k.

And now the twins announcers are beside themselves with glee as Reyes retires Thome with only one pitch…. Base hits up the middle/ other way….. j.k.

Up next: Twins live. featuring Twins winning the Twins way and Morneau hitting lefties. That’s the name of this game…. j.k.

Well…. the good news is Swisher broke out of his slump. Maybe the Sox will get the Twins tomorrow!

We should have won this one! So, if we are going to split in the twin-cities i suggest we begin tomorrow night….. That’s all for me, I need to decompress now…. Go Sox ’08…. j.k.

Please bench Konerko, please!

One loss for ozzie, you play that game like it was the 7th game of the world series. Four run lead you do not give up without going to the pen with a rookie pitching.

Seriously – WTF? BA hits a home run and then is benched? Maybe it was because of the overthrow that allowed Gomez into second?

I really hate the Twins with a passion equal to the fire of a thousand burning suns…And they all seem to have this smug look on their faces. I hate that look. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

They should be smug. They are returning us the favor of a sweep….. NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT! Now, goodnight.. j.k.

Folks you’re not going to like what Ozzie said after the farce tonight. Story by Mark Gonzales in the Tribune.

Basically Ozzie said he can’t understand why folks are ripping him and Kenny for their decisions and for apparently not doing anything at the trade deadline (Memo to Ozzie, maybe it’s because the lead is down to a half game, you can’t win squat in the Metrodome and a quarter of your lineup couldn’t hit their way out of a paper bag?)

Ozzie said he’s sticking with Konerko.

OK Ozzie…whatever. Feel free to blow a chance to make the post season for the 3rd time in six years because you’re going to remain loyal to the players no matter how bad they perform.

Mark Liptak

Saw this in another location but it’s spot on. On Morneau’s double the Twins scores all three baserunners.

The guy standing on first base was Joe Mauer.

The Twins catcher.

And he scored from first base.

How many games have we seen where the Sox can’t score a guy from second base on a hit let alone from first?

Speed kills….a beer league softball team doesn’t.

Also it seems the pitching is coming down to what many expected, a 6.32 ERA over its last 13 games.

Ozzie has never had a team play better in the final 81 games then in the first 81 contests. Just something to keep in mind and watch for.

Mark Liptak

To me it sounded like Ozzie was basing his reasoning on sticking with Konerko because his only alternative is to move Swisher in and play Brian Anderson in CF, and Anderson does not have a much better average. Well let me see anyone go hit .250 or more starting once a week if that. Oh and not mention BA would probably catch Konerko on the bases if Konerko had a 3 base head start. BA can also bunt to move a runner.

I sure hope Anderson did not see the comments I saw tonight that Ozzie made. I saw them on the post game show, but I believe they were comments made before the game. His facial expression pretty much gave away how he feels about Brian. He obviously hates him.

No way should they have pinch hit for BA either. He had a couple of very good at bats tonight, but it is obvious Ozzie is not going to give him a shot to prove himself so nothing we can do.

As for Clayton Richard he looked very good for the first 4 innings, but you just can’t walk guys to get to Mauer and Morneau. They will beat you, especially Morneau. I’d pay part of his salary if they would trade him to the NL. That was a tough break with Dye turning the wrong way. That ball was hit so hard he had to guess and he guessed wrong. Could have been a different outcome if guesses the other way. Generally lefty on lefty the ball slices because it is moving away from the hitter, but that pitch got in enough that Morneau really hooked it.

I forget who mentioned it, but Cooper did go out to the mound in the 5th, it was just early in the inning. A wasted trip since the trouble got much worse. Neither Cooper nor Ozzie are very good in game with the pitchers. Cooper is great with fixing mechanics, but that is probably about it.

Is that not the Sox luck in the Hump Dome. Our pitcher gets hit with a ball and the guy gets a hit, their pitcher gets hit with a ball and it lies at his feet. If it weren’t for bad luck we’d have no luck at all.

Well Floyd and Danks had better show up for us the next couple days. I know many don’t believe that this series is any more important than any other. But if we don’t win a game or two and get some momentum back it may be a nasty slide.

I just know about ozzie’s comments about who would take PK’s spot in the lineup were kind of off. There’s always options. I know that at times, if you do the same thing over and over, you may be more than likely to get the same result. This looks to be one of those situations. Not saying that I can do their jobs (KW or Ozzie’s), but you’re dropping games now, might as well drop them with some guys hungry to prove something….

I’m trying real hard to keep the faith that we will win the division, but let me spew my venom for a minute…..

If Coop had already been out then why doesn’t Toby Hall go out and calm down the rookie?

We all cried for Konerko to be re-signed and I’m not ready to completely give up on him, but doesn’t he need to take a seat for awhile to get his head together?

Ozzie just does not like Brian Anderson. Then trade the poor guy so he can get a shot somewhere else. (disclosure–yes I am a big BA fan) His sarcastic comments about him and Wise platooning with Swish at first not being any better than Konerko are ridiculous. Doesn’t Swish seem to hit better when he plays 1B?

There just seems to be too many mental errors (and actual errors) to consider this team a contender to win it all. I REALLY hope I’m wrong and I’m not ready to give up–for goodness sakes we ARE in first place for now–but it is so frustrating to watch sometimes!! Every time I think we are on a roll, we slide. Yes I understand it’s a long season, and yes I know it is easier to do from where I am sitting as opposed to on the field and yes, I know we are going to have our down slides, but it is so frustrating. *Don’t beat me up TQ, I’m just venting!! :)

Seriously, those comments that Ozzie made really infuriated me. What have BA and Wise done every time they’ve been in a game? Make timely hits! Of course their average is going to suffer with spot starts. Konerko, one of my favorite players, needs to take a break and sort things out. He grounds into too many double plays, kills rallies, and has been making mental errors lately. Do I think we should get rid of him? No, because quite honestly, the guy can carry a team when he’s on. He’s just not on right now and needs time to fix that. Right now I’m on the boat with BA/Wise in CF and Swish at 1st. Swish’s batting average many not be leaps and bounds above Paulie’s, but he does so much more in each at bat. Give PK a break for a while and get his head right. Jeez, the guy is 32 and looks twice my age…

Sox in ’09!

In one way, I understand what Ozzie is saying….All 4 of them are crap. While that is somewhat true at least the other line ups will improve your team speed, defense and probably chemistry. Are Wise and Anderson going to be on the all star team? Hell no. Can they run faster…yes… will they hang their heads after every single at bat..no… will they take their offense with them on defense and make awful play after awful play…no. I do not like Konerko. Never have and probably never will. I say platoon the two guys in center and play swisher at first. His average is bad but at least he gets on base a lot. And at least he has come up with a few big hits this year.

Orlando
AJ
Quentin
Dye
Thome
Alexei
Fields
Swisher
Anderson/Wise

Actually i would rather see uribe at third than fields but i doubt that will happen

Instead of Ozzie saying how “bad” Sox fans are maybe Ozzie should explain why his teams can’t win in Minnesota, can’t win in Oakland or can’t win in Boston.

That’s a lot of places the Sox can’t win in…maybe that’s why the can’t ever seem to make the playoffs with any regularity.

Mark Liptak

Paulie could definitely use some “time off”
–Jeff
http://redstatebluestate.mlblogs.com/

Hi everyone, I’m back from my road trip to the “House of Horrors” which my friend kept calling the “Metronome” (Freudian slip referring to time ticking out? I don’t think so. More likely because her husband is a musician.) Having never been there before in person, I can only report that I now understand what a joke it is to try and play there. It was not built for playing baseball as we could see when PK stood at 1st base in between innings and actually bounced a baseball off the playing surface like it was a rubber ball. Funny, and yet . . . not. There are no stadium parking lots, so there is no tailgating. Really not funny. (What do they do for football games? I shudder to think!)

Not happy about the loss (we were there on Monday night), but it was pretty cool to see other Sox fans there among what has to be the palest (not kidding) baseball crowd I’ve ever seen. (Since there weren’t any Cub fans around, we were unafraid to high five and salute each other out loud. That story is disgusting, by the way. I’ve always said its not the Cubs I hate, it’s their fans. We should all send that guy some flowers or candy or something.)

I would just like to say I was happy to see Ehren Wasserman back in the bullpen and I thought he pitched great. My Twins fan niece had never seen him throw before and she was completely befuddled by his delivery. (Apparently the Twins were too.)

One other bright note in Minnesota (besides shopping at Byerly’s), there is a huge sign behind the left field seats that counts down the number of games left until they begin to play in their new outdoor baseball park. Since the Hump Dome will still be used for football, there will be no implosion (sorry to say), but perhaps we could stomp a paper mache or balloon effigy next year at a tailgating party at the Cell.

Well, since everyone seemed to be hoping for a split, we got the two L’s that we needed (I know, not funny again) so let’s get those two W’s!!! GO SOX!!

(I don’t worry about managing games or making trades so that’s all I have to say for now.)

Nice calming post nmbrott, thanks. I have calmed down since last nights loss. Tonight we see if we can continue to stave off those pesky Twins. We’ve managed before when they were 1/2 game back, but never had to do it at their place before.

Some bad news. Looking at the schedule for the remainder of the season we have a much harder road than do the Twins. Minn has 56 games remaining with only 21 against teams with winning records. The Tigers have 56 games left but with 30 games against +500 teams. We have 57 games left and 31 of those are against winning teams. So while we are playing the red sox and yankees for 10 games, the Twins get to play seattle 9 times! That’s going to be tough to match up against.

That makes our quest for the Central title much more difficult than the Twins. The games still have to be played, but the head to head games we have in the Central especially against the Twins is ever more important if we are to achieve our goal. That being said, we are still in first place and after three losses in a row are due for a four or five game win streak. That would be very nice, and needs to start tonight…. Go White Sox ’08… j.k.

Sorry about the four poster… It’s a nice style for a bed, but not for a blog… it was the damn server that messed me up…

To all long time members of this site… did you see?…

WE HAD A DUKE REIFER POST!!!

Ira, where you been, boychick? … Your opinions have been sorely missed…

Not enough time for me now… but I will be back shortly to rant about the manager and how HE lost last night’s game… whether he wants to admit it or not…

and his pitching coach too…

TQ (alive and well)

Mark,

The only teams that win consistently in Minnesota, Oakland and Boston are Minnesota, Oakland and Boston.

The Sox are not alone in calling the Metrodome the “House of Horrors.” Just ask about every other team in baseball about their experiences there. Maybe start with the ’87 Cardinals and the ’91 Braves.

The Sox didn’t lose Monday and Tuesday just because Konerko can’t hit, Ozzie can’t manage, Coop can’t coach pitchers, Fields can’t field, etc., etc. They lost because Minnesota is pretty damn good.

By the way, whoever it was that called for Cooper to be fired needs to sit back, think about what they said, look at all the succes he has had with that pitching staff over the last few years, and then issue an apology for that hastily made remark.

HeY Tom, remember when there were reiferians and klieniacs on this board? What a fiasco that was!!!
I was then and shall forevermore remain a Kleiniac. LOL!!!!

Lisa

What’s with the Ozzie and Coop hating all of the sudden?

1. You can’t bring in a reliever early in the fifth with a strained bullpen. Richard was left out there against Mauer and Morneau because he was probably the chance at getting the two out. You’re not going to bring in Logan in a crucial spot like that. You can’t bring in Thornton in the 5th, he needs to be saved for later in the game. Especially with Linebrink out.

2. Sws, every time you yell at Coop for not going out to mound, it turns out he actually did. Make sure you know your facts before calling someone out. Then someone else said that Coop shouldn’t have gone out that early? He went out there after one run had already scored and there were guys at second and third. I can’t think of a more perfect time to go out to the mound. If he had gone out there any later you would be saying, “what took Coop so long to get out there?” Also, how is it Coop’s fault that his pitcher missed his spots? Do you think that if he had said something different to Clayton, that he would have pitched more accurately after that? You don’t have to remind pitchers to not walk guys, they already know that.

3. This one really baffles me. Ozzie pitch hits Swisher for Anderson. Swisher then ends up hitting a home run, and you still criticize Ozzie for making the move. IT WORKED! How can you question a move that worked?! What do you think is a bigger possibility, Anderson hitting another home run, or Swisher hitting one? Ozzie knew the answer. Yet for some reason I guess he was wrong.

4. Konerko in July: .206 AVG / Swisher in July: .187 AVG
Those two can split time at first base while Wise and Anderson split time at center.

5. I just read this one. “If Coop had already been out then why doesn’t Toby Hall go out and calm down the rookie?”

Um, let’s see….HE DID! Toby Hall and OC went to the mound before the Mauer at bat to talk to him.

6. We keep trying ways to blame different people on our team for not winning. But guess what, Minnesota beat us. Put the blame on Minnesota. Ozzie didn’t lose it. Coop didn’t lose it. JD didn’t lose it cause he didn’t run faster (guess what, he’s always been that slow. He’s not a great defender. Those flashy dives are nice, but defense isn’t his strength.) I guess you could say Richard lost it, cause he did pick up the L. The two costly walks were also his fault. But Mauer and Morneau came up with some great hits. As much as I hate to say, they deserve credit for what they did.

7. Let’s go get that split. Even one win keeps us in first.

-Scam

TC:

The problem is other teams don’t do as badly as the Sox do in those towns which is part of the reason the Sox are usually sitting at home come October.

You can’t just write off ten, twelve, thirteen games a year because your team mentally gets spooked in those cities can you?

My point was Ozzie’s rant against the fans was way out of line in my opinion. Let him answer his own limitations as a manager first before he starts throwing stones at others. And for the record, I like Ozzie a lot.

Mark Liptak

Thank you TC!!!! I’m glad someone else sees that as well.

Scam, excellant post! Lisa, I am humbled, thank you. Now all we need is for Kolsens to return…. maybe not. Good to see your name on this blog again Duke….. j.k.

Sorry scam, that was me not seeing toby go to the mound…must have somehow missed that one. Let’s just please win tonight so we all are happy in White Sox World!!

It’s alright Mac, I was just a little worked up after reading everyone’s posts. I actually thought the rest of yours was pretty good.
