About Time

Sunday, February 15, 2009

Sorry, sorry, sorry.  So sorry it has taken me this loooonng to finally post again.  There were several times this offseason when I thought, “I need to blog,” but time pressures always seemed in the way.  I hope I haven’t lost too many readers over the winter, and beginning today, I will start to rev the engines again to provide you one person’s inside look at the 2009 White Sox.

New Digs

Our new complex in Glendale, Ariz. opened today to rave reviews from staff and players.  Brand new look, new car smell and construction workers everywhere.  Things are definitely still “under construction,” but you can see how amazing this place will be by March 1.

“Unbelievable,” Ozzie Guillen said in describing the complex.  “Spoiled.  So nice to come here and work every day.”

Guillen offered an array of thoughts and opinions as he met with the Chicago media following the first workout.

On the Sox being projected for last place in the AL Central by Baseball Prospectus:

“We have a good enough ballclub not to finish last,” he said with a sly smile.  “If we finish fourth, I might ask for a raise!

“It’s another year to prove people wrong.  I love that.”

On the first day of spring:

“I love my job.  There’s nothing like spring training.”

Today’s Story

Jose Contreras, or at least what’s left of Jose Contreras, was the talk of camp today.  The right-hander looks great, having dropped a lot of weight and worked hard this offseason.  Ozzie cautioned patience with Contreras in terms of returning too quickly to the mound after the Achilles injury, saying, “we will let him set the schedule.”

On the weight loss:

“Jose always came to spring training in shape.  It was the end of spring training when he was out of shape.”

Welcome back Scott!!!! Good luck in Glendale, I miss you already….. Go Sox’09…..j.k.

Al least you guys are coming down here three times this year….. j.k.

Glad to have you back. Great Inauguration Day stories! You return squarely among the Latest Leaders at the MLBlogs Network, looking forward to your…FIFTH!…season as the true pioneer of all professional sports executive bloggers — even pre-Mark Cuban!

Welcome back and good to hear from you, Scott! Looking forward to the upcoming year. Keep the inside scoop coming.

Scott, it is great to have you back! Can’t wait for all of your great posts!

Pitcher, catchers and a new blog. What a wonderful day! Welcome to a new year everyone! Let the fun begin.

Where the hell have you been Reifert… Christ sakes. we make this a top 10 blog and then you go soft on us and go MIA for months at a time!??!! Inexcusable!

That being said, I am excited for this season. I think it will be a good year. I will make my predictions sometime around spring training. I have a better track record than baseball prospectus anyway.

Welcome back! I hope you have a great season!

Welcome Back Scott!!!! It’s so great to see that you are blogging again. Had a great time talking iwth you at SoxFest and can’t wait to hear more about the goings on of Srping Training!!!!

Great to see you back writing after your short hiatus. I would guess that desert air also makes you want to write more now. The air is crisp and clean and the views are remarkable.

Great news on Contreras. Always thought he might be pulling a few extra pounds after seeing him have some difficulties in the recent years on the mound. Just need Ozzie to take care of business and put down those pesky Twins fast before they figure out what happened to them.

You division will be fun to watch in 2009. In fact, I think the entire American League might be closer than they have been in a long time based on talent. Money doesn’t buy you heart and confidence. But talent and luck can take you all the way.

Rays Renegade

Per Scott’s request, here’s the link to the Sox Retired Numbers Book I designed last semester: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2017354&id=34901423&l=e811f

If anyone is looking for a Graphic Designer, I’m your girl! lol.

Nice to see Buerhle considering retirement after 2011. Just what you want to hear on the first day of spring… your ace pitcher wants to retire because he is home sick. Suck it up you big sally. id give my right nut like john kruk to be able to go out to spring training. If this story came out the last day of the year it is one thing… but the FIRST DAY!? jesus. way to buzzkill.

Kenwo, Keep your family jewels. Buy a ticket for Phoenix and VISIT spring training. No surgery needed…. Go Sox… j.k.

I think there is a player — an outfielder, hits left-handed — that played for the Rockies last year and was looking for a team this past winter. I think he may be in need of a graphic designer to help improve his resume a little bit. All that stands out on it is some home run he hit in the ninth inning on a cold and rainy night in Chicago a few years ago. At least the home run broke a tie and won the game.

Kenwo, congratulations on joining Liptak as being in mid-season form in February. A Kenwo rant on the first day of pitchers and catchers. Now I know it is baseball season.

And jk, go Sox ’09!!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Feels like baseball season is on the way! Yeah!

Will be looking forward to any tidbits on Gavin Floyd.

Welcome back Scott! Glad you are back and I’m looking forward to another year of your insight on the inside!

As you can tell by the comments on your last post, we managed to keep ourselves entertained over the long winter months.

Nothing like the start of spring training to put me in a better mood!

It can be hard to read tonality in posts. tc, if I’m reading that as you intended it, I’m sorry. I stand by what I said, but I’ll just stay out of it from now on. Can we go back to being friends?

Hey Amy,
Not to get in the middle, but I think tc was busting kenwo’s chops, not yours!

MariE the peacemaker.

My tongue was firmly planted in my cheek with that last comment!!!! Was just hinting that Scotty P didn’t find many suitors this past fall and that your graphic design wizardry might dress up his resume a little.

Didn’t you get my reference to the all-time greatest home run that I have ever witnessed??? I’m a lifelong fan of good ol’ No. 22 and will stand side-by-side with you, my friend, in cheering for him every time he comes to bat when he is not playing against the White Sox.

Are we pals again? Geez, I feel like I’ve spent half my life apologizing to women when I didn’t try to do anything wrong. And when you’re as old as me or TQ, that half a life is pretty damn long!!!! Hell, that half a life is longer than you’ve been on this earth!!!! lol

ok, good. i thought you were peeved at my pseudo-defense of Lip during the Bud debate, and thought you were ripping me/scottie when you said something along the lines of “dude, get over it. he’s not that great” two posts ago. I was just trying to clear the air, soon as I saw this one. We’re buddies, all’s good.

Welcome back Scott. The new digs sound great! Here’s to proving them all wrong about last place.
