Beckham Arrival

Gordon flew in this morning from Charlotte and was saying his hellos around the clubhouse.  He said his mom and dad are on their way for today’s game.  Beckham will wear uniform No. 15 (not No. 3, that one is taken).

It’s been interesting to listen to and watch the public reaction to his quick arrival.

Having watched Gordon this spring, here are my thoughts:  the ball does jump off his bat, some guys have that, some do not; he played at a very high level in college, which certainly gives guys a head start when compared to a prospect who may just be coming out of high school; he’s had success at pretty competitive professional levels; our director of player development is Buddy Bell, who knows a thing or two about playing third base; and with Ozzie Guillen and Joey Cora, we have the middle infield thing covered.

Earlier today, I was talking with a media rep about Robin Ventura and his big league debut.  If you recall, and I’m sure most of you do, RV went something like 0-for-41 to start his career and turned out to be a pretty good big leaguer … so don’t judge anyone too soon (i.e. let’s stay even keel about this kid whether today is 0-4 or 4-4).

Just my thoughts …

Welcome to the big time Mr. Beckam. I am not sure how I feel about this and all that goes with it. A few days ago Ozzie says if we need to call him up we are in trouble and now here he is?? Just from what I’ve been hearing Ozzie say, I’m not sure he is on board with this move. That concerns me.

I am also worried about the messiah like aura folks are having about him. Let’s not be too quick to judge this boy. He may go 0-4 he may make errors, he may go 4-4, but let’s try and reserve judgement as Scott says. I worry we have too high of expectations for this kid. Come September I’ll be happy to eat crow, but I don’t get what all the excitement is about yet. We’ve seen flashes of brilliance who turn out to do nothing here. I hold my judgement.

Mark is the man we want pitching today. Stop these losses at 2!!

I totally agree that we need to be cautious in immediately judging Beckham. Not too long ago, I also remember Ozzie saying that he wanted Beckham to spend a full year down in the Minors. Well, it didn’t turn out that way, did it? I guess that they wouldn’t have brought him up unless they really needed him, right? We’ll just have to wait and see if this works out, right?
Come on Mark and dig us out today!!

The gang in Atlanta is proud of Gordon.

Here is a video he did in January at Buckhead Baseball, the park where he played as a kid.
