White Sox Spring Training 2010, Day 1

Overview

Day 1 of spring training was abbreviated someone because of morning rain.  After physicals and a quick team meeting in the clubhouse, the team stretched inside the weight room with Allen Thomas, strength and conditioning coach.

The pitchers and catchers then headed outside for a look at one-year-old Camelback Ranch Glendale.  After loosing up by playing catch in the outfield, half the pitchers threw their first bullpen (the other half go tomorrow).  Then it was on to conditioning and work in the weight room.  All in all, a quick day.

GM Ken Williams and manager Ozzie Guillen spoke to the media at length after the workout.  To see parts of their interview, click here.

News of the Day

Guillen named Mark Buehrle the Opening Day starter, with Jake Peavy going in game two.  The next three are still to be determined.

With this start, Buehrle (who is 2-1 in seven previous OD starts) will pass White Sox great Billy Pierce for most OD honors.  Pierce started White Sox openers in 1951-52, 54 and 56-59.  Buehrle took the mound in 2002-06 and 2008-09.

Quote of the Day

Prior to today’s workout, newly acquired Andruw Jones was telling coach Joey Cora that he was going to prove he was the best centerfielder in camp.

“You should be,” Cora responded, “the only people here now are pitchers and catchers.”

New of the Day 2

Utility player Freddie Bynum has been released from his minor league contract so that he can pursue an opportunity to play in Japan.

Congratulations to Buehrle for getting the Opening Day nod. If anyone had to break Billy Pierce’s OD record, I’m glad Buehrle is the one who’s going to do it.

And major LOL’s at Joey’s comment to Andruw Jones. Baseball is back everyone! Go White Sox!

Baby Update: T-minus 6 weeks and counting…if she makes it that long. :)

Im very excited that Mark Buehrle will be our Opening Day pitcher for us facing The Cleaveland Indians. This should be that the start to a good season with a win on our side as well for Jake Peavy on the second game.

You gotta love that the energy that White Sox Coaches take to Spring Training. That was an awesome response by Joey Cora to Andruw Jones.

I can only imagine the excitment the entire White Sox team has going into Spring Training to a still new Training Facility at Camelback Ranch Glendale. From here in Chicago I support my Chicago White Sox Team 100% all the way.

Love the Cora/Jones story! Maybe it has been too long with no baseball talk but I am still laughing audibly. (LOL for you kids out there)

I see this site is finally waking up. It has sure seemed like a longer than usual off season to me, and it’s great to see so many of my “friends” back to posting. Now all can get back to normal again. But we do need some nicer weather. It is supposed to get back into the 60′s by this weekend and hopefully the 70′s soon after that. It’s all California’s fault of course for our rain and cold temps (cold by our standard anyway). It all comes from the West(not Peggy’s part of the state), so it’s all their fault.

Now…… Go White Sox’10……j.k.
