If you didn’t see this video in the most recent e-newsletter, pretty cool look at the role defense has played for the White Sox so far in 2010.
While it doesn’t get much attention, a group of our players — Scott Linebrink, Mark Buehrle, John Danks, Mark Kotsay and Matt Thornton — visited Bethesda Naval Hospital while the team was in Baltimore.
Here’s a note we received after the visit:
I’m not sure how to get in touch with the players that visited Bethesda Naval Hospital on August 7th, but thanks to them for taking the time to cheer up our wounded warriors. My son is a US Marine and thankfully is not wounded, but a very good friend of his lost both of his legs in Afghanistan and was certainly cheered by the visit and autographs and caps! Thanks for taking the time to do that! You have new life long fans that are surly not going to be fair weather fans!!! Please keep doing this whenever you can. You have NO IDEA how much this means to the men and women who have sacrificed so much. Dave T
And our guys found this posted outside a room at the hospital:
To All Who Enter Here
If you are coming into this room with sorrow or to feel sorry for my wounds, go elsewhere. The wounds I received, I got in a job I love, doing it for people I love, supporting the friends of a country I deeply love. I am incredibly tough and will make a full recovery. What is full? That is the absolute, utmost physically my body has the ability to recover. Then I will push that about 20 percent further through sheer mental tenacity. This room you are about to enter is a room of fun, optimism, and intense rapid regrowth. If you are not prepared for that, GO ELSEWHERE!
Chicago White Sox Charities Week
This week is CWS Charities Week at the ballpark, culminating with live on-air auctions on Saturday (WGN-TV) and Sunday (Comcast Sports Net).
Christine O’Reilly, Executive Director of CWS Charities, stopped by the WGN Studios today to talk about the events planned for the next few days.
Tonight, you can stop by the Charities booth in center field and buy game used baseball and lineup cards.
If you donate $100 by August 15, you will receive an autographed photo and be eligible to win the Ultimate VIP White Sox package.
You may have heard about our first-ever Celebrity Bowling event with the White Sox on August 23. Sports are going fast, so sign up today by clicking here.
To my wife, Amy, who made the mistake 20 years ago of getting married on August 11 to someone who ended up with a career in baseball. I’ve told the stories before, but our first anniversary was spent answering the phone in a Baltimore hotel room after Wilson Alvarez’s no-hitter earlier in the day (so much for dinner at Sabatino’s) and our second was ruined by an extra-inning game in Anaheim that foiled dinner on North Beach in SF later that night. At that point, we quit celebrating on the date and now look for off days!
