A Fun Day for Sox Players and Soldiers Alike
On Monday, Jake Peavy hosted 10 United States Marines and Navy Corpsman from Camp Pendleton and the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego, California. All of these servicemen have been awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat. The special guests were offered the opportunity to make the trip to Arizona by Strikeouts For Troops, an organization founded by San Francisco Giants’ pitcher, Barry Zito, and supported by professional baseball players throughout MLB, including Peavy.
The troops took a complete tour of Camelback Ranch, visiting the practice fields, training room, weight room (where they kidded Jake that he could spend a little more time) and the clubhouse, where Jake introduced them to the rest of the team to take photos and gather autographs. The troops were later hosted at a dinner in their honor at Frasher’s Steakhouse where Jake performed with Barry Zito and other friends. There was a pact made at the ballpark that before the evening was over the troops would all get on stage with Jake and perform the Unchained Melodies scene from the movie Top Gun. Here are the soldiers both posing with our players in the Sox clubhouse and at the evening event where Peavy was presented with the Joe Zito Patriot Award, named after Barry’s Dad.
