Crain, Keppinger on the Mend and Sale Talks About Opening Day Start: “It’s Going to be Awesome”
St. Patrick’s Day: Sunday, March 17, 2013
The White Sox today wore green caps to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day. Beginning March 25, the autographed caps will be auctioned on whitesox.com with proceeds benefitting Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago.
And if you missed Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with the White Sox today, you have another chance on September 14 at U.S. Cellular Field when the Sox celebrate Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day.
The first 20,000 fans 21 & older will walk away with the hat pictured below thanks to Miller Lite.
Here’s Jesse Crain, green cap and all, back on the mound this morning in a “B” game, as he recovers from a strained adductor. Crain said the outing went well.
“Health-wise, this was definitely a step forward and I’m very close,” he said. “The other day I’d probably give myself 80 percent, I felt out there today I was about 90–I was just a little tenative mentally to get over the ball…I’m just worried about feeling good and not wanting to think about my leg when I’m out there…From two days ago it was a huge jump. I’m excited about it and hopefully in a day or two I’ll get back out there again and be even closer.” He also added that based on today’s outing he feels confident he’ll be ready for Opening Day.
Jeff talked to the writers this morning. He made it clear that his shoulder, which has kept him out of the lineup at times this spring, is now a non-issue and he’s ready to go. He was in the lineup today at DH.
Quote of the Day
Chris Sale on his Opening Day start and how quickly he’s reached this point in his career:
“I’m really excited about it, it’s an honor. I called my Dad the other day and I said, ‘When am I going to wake up?, when’s the wake-up call coming?’ It’s been a lot to take in, but I’m certainly appreciative of everything. I know what’s gone on doesn’t happen to a lot of people.
“I’m definitely going to have to collect myself, that’s for sure–stay focused and take a lot of deep breaths. The last couple Opening Days I’ve been like a kid in a candy shop. It’s one of those days that’s fun, the excitement, the energy’s around…Being a part of that now could be overwhelming and I’ll do everything I can to collect my thoughts and stay on an even plane.
“It’s going to be awesome (to open the season at home). My knees are shaking right now just thinking about it. Going up there and having our fans for Day 1–you know the Cell is going to be electric. Our fans will be screaming their heads off, going nuts, against a division rival.”
Play of the Day
Jordan Danks continued his recent surge, going 2-2 with a walk in the Sox’s 10-0 loss to the Royals at Surprise.
Danks is now hitting .333 this spring.
Off-day for the White Sox in the Cactus League. Jake Peavy and Nate Jones will pitch in a simulated game vs. the Dodgers’ minor leaguers at Noon (Chicago time) in Glendale. On Tuesday, it will be the Sox vs the Reds at Goodyear (3:05 p.m., Chicago time). John Danks is scheduled to start vs. Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey.
Did You Know…
…that, with today being St. Patrick’s Day, only one player with the last name Green has worn a White Sox uniform? And that was outfielder Danny Green, who played for the Sox from 1902-05.
