Robin: John Danks Needs More Time to Build Up Arm Strength
Wednesday, March 20, 2013
After today’s game, Robin Ventura confirmed that John Danks likely will make a few minor league starts and then begin the season on the DL. The skipper said there simply isn’t enough separation between his fastball and changeup and the only way to build up the necessary arm strength is to pitch.
Dylan Axelrod will be put on a schedule to take Danks’ spot in the rotation and Hector Santiago will remain in the bullpen because of his versatility.
Robin also said that Dayan Viciedo could have played today and should be in the lineup tomorrow.
White Sox executives, staff and players will attend a private screening tonight for the new Jackie Robinson movie, “42,” which opens nationally in theaters on April 12. Along with Ken Williams and Harold Baines, Jerry Reinsdorf is scheduled to attend. Reinsdorf, who grew up in Brooklyn as a Dodgers fan, attended one of Robinson’s very first games at Ebbets Field in 1949, an exhibition game against the Yankees played just before Opening Day. It will be interesting to hear his thoughts on tonight’s movie.
The Beauty and the General Manager
Happy Birthday to Sox GM Rick Hahn. As it turns out, Hahn shares his birthday with former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and successful entrepreneur Kathy Ireland. Before you ask what Kathy has to do with the White Sox, remember that she threw out the ceremonial first pitch before a Sox game in 1989.
More Good Food
Already known for the quality and variety of their ballpark food, the Sox will expand their offerings at the Cell this season on the 100 and 500 levels. Among the new additions will include Bull’s BBQ, created by former Sox star Greg Luzinski and featuring sweet BBQ pork; the Comiskey Burger, a double or triple cheeseburger topped with “Chitown Pico,” a relish salsa made with all the Chicago Dog ingredients; the Walking Taco, consisting of a bag of Fritos served with nacho cheese, chili and a fork; and a host of new beer offerings. There will also be new items for fans on the Club Level, Diamond Suites and the Stadium Club.
Say hello to the Comiskey Burger…
The MLB Network’s Peter Gammons, a visitor to Sox camp today, was seen watching BP.
Quote of the Day
Adam Dunn on playing left field in today’s game: He said he felt comfortable, happy that he didn’t air mail the throw to home plate, happy that it was Rod Barajas running instead of Michael Johnson and happy that he didn’t have many balls hit to him since his glove still isn’t quite broken in. He also said he assumes he that he will only play LF in interleague games.
Play of the Day
Jordan Danks continues to sizzle. With his homer and single today in the 4-2 loss to the Diamondbacks he is 12-17 (.706) with three doubles, two homers and nine RBI over his last six games.
White Sox vs. Brewers at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (3:05 p.m., Chicago time). Chris Sale will start for the Sox and Mike Fiers will do likewise for Milwaukee.
Did You Know…
…that entering today’s game, Paul Konerko was tied for second in the Cactus League in home runs (5) and ranks sixth in slugging percentage (.744), Adam Dunn was tied for third in walks (8) while Ramon Troncoso led the CL in games (10)?
