Five More Games, Then Sox Head North
Saturday, March 23, 2013
Jake Peavy and the Sox face Hyun-Jim Ryu and the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (9:05 p.m., Chicago time, live on MLB.TV, CSC or listen on WSCR).
Starting lineup: De Aza, cf; Sanchez, ss; Keppinger, 3b; Dunn, 1b; Flowers, c; Short, rf; Wise, lf; Tolleson, 2b; Peavy, p.
The Sox and A’s played to a 4-4 tie. Jose Quintana had a terrific outing, striking out nine in 5.2 IP.
On the Back Fields…
Today’s night game gave me a chance to watch some minor league baseball on the back fields this afternoon.
“You lost?” Asst GM/VP Buddy Bell asked when he saw me out at the cloverleaf.
Ignoring him as best I could, I focused on the two games going on at one time.
The big news was the 2.0 scoreless IP by Jesse Crain, who has been slowed all spring with a strained adductor. He faced a minimum six batters, striking out two and throwing 17 of 20 pitches for strikes.
On the other diamond, Addison Reed and Donnie Veal each got their work in early.
Reed threw 36 pitches (29 strikes), allowing two runs (one earned) over 2.0 IP (four strikeouts). Veal faced seven batters, allowing a two-run homer and striking out one.
Jeff Keppinger is 6-7 (.857) with a home run, two RBI and four runs scored over his last three games … Paul Konerko owns a nine-game hitting streak, going 11-27 (.407) with a homer and four RBI … Dewayne Wise has hit safely in seven straight games (.391, 9-23).
Sale vs. Reed
With apologies to GM Rick Hahn’s Harvard Crimson (he went to law school there), which upset New Mexico on Thursday, the biggest shock of the NCAA tournament so far has been No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast University’s victory over No. 2 seed Georgetown last night. FGCU is Chris Sale’s alma mater and it was certainly cause for him to celebrate. So, who’s next for Florida Gulf Coast? San Diego State, alma mater of Chris’s teammate Addison Reed, tomorrow.
Coming and Going
The White Sox have acquired minor-league INF Cody Puckett from Cincinnati for cash considerations…Puckett hit .257 (504-1,959) with 77 home runs and 288 RBI over 538 games (five seasons) in the Reds organization … he was selected in the eighth round of the 2008 draft.
The Sox also traded minor-league OF Justin Green to Arizona for cash considerations.
Quote of the Day
Robin said yesterday that he expects to start the season with Keppinger hitting second, Rios third, Dunn fourth and Konerko fifth. He added that he will not hesitate to move guys around based on matchups and how they’re performing. He added that the rotation should line up this way to start the season: Sale, Peavy, Floyd, Quintana with the fifth spot likely Axelrod.
Play of the Day
When finished with his 2.0 IP of work, Crain was driven back in a golf cart to the major league clubhouse by guest coach Art “Cave” Kusyner. Only concern was that Cave doesn’t see all that well.
White Sox vs. Royals at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (3:05 p.m., Chicago time). It’s TBA for the Sox vs. Jeremy Guthrie. John Danks and Axelrod will appear in a minor league game.
Did You Know…
…that the Sox have now played to four ties this spring?
