Celebrating 1983

In the continuing celebration of the 1983 “Winning Ugly” White Sox, starting pitcher Floyd Bannister, who won 16 games in ’83, and Dennis Lamp, who led the Sox that year with 15 saves, will be honored before today’s game.

And here’s Lamarr Hoyt, the ’83 A.L. Cy Young Award winner, talking about that special Sox season:

Quote of the Day

On retro Sunday, here is the third in a series of quotes from the book, “What It Means to Be A White Sox,” by Bob Vorwald. Sox slugger Greg Luzinski, who hit 32 homers with 95 RBI for the ’83 Sox, talks about his legendary roof shots in old Comiskey Park:

“I hit three over the roof that year–and one of them on national TV–so that whole thing was really fun. It’s not something you’re trying to do, you just want to make good, hard contact and hit it on the sweet spot. That’s just displaying power, I guess.”

Play of the Day

Dayan Viciedo matched his season high of three hits with a double and two singles and drove in a run in the Sox’s 4-3 loss. He also made two outstanding catches in leftfield.

Tomorrow’s Schedule

Off-day. On Tuesday, White Sox vs. Orioles at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, WCIU) in the first of a three-game series. Starters: LHP John Danks (1-5, 4.68) for the Sox, RHP Jason Hammel (7-4, 5.09) for the Orioles.

Did You Know…

…that Sale ranks second among A.L. leaders in opponents slugging percentage; third in opponents on-base percentage; third in baserunners per 9.0 IP; fourth in opponents average; fifth in ERA; and is tied for sixth in strikeouts?
