LaRussa on 1983
On another retro Sunday, Tony LaRussa shares his memories from the 1983 “Winning Ugly” White Sox.
Play of the Day
Chris Sale’s complete game gem. He gave up just one run, seven hits and struck out seven last night in the 1-0 Sox loss.
Quote of the Day
Here is the latest in a series of excerpts from Bob Vorwald’s excellent book, “What It Means To Be A White Sox.” Here’s former Sox first baseman and hitting coach Greg Walker talking about 1983:
“Nineteen eighty-three was a dream for me. It was my first full year in the big leagues, and I was surrounded by players I had grown up watching play, and all of a sudden I was on the same team with them. That team was one of the great chemistry teams ever assembled. It started with Tony (LaRussa) and the coaching staff and carried to the veterans like (Jerry) Koosman, (Carlton) Fisk and (Greg) Luzinski…Those guys are a big reason I’m coaching now. They passed it down the line to me, and I still feel obligated to pass on all those lessons they taught me.”
White Sox vs. Indians at Progressive Field, Cleveland (6:05 p.m., CT, CSN+) in the first of a four-game series. Starters: LHP John Danks (2-8, 4.81) for the Sox, RHP Zach McAllister (4-6, 3.57) for the Tribe.
Did You Know…
…that Class AA Birmingham infielder Marcus Semien has hit safely in 19 of his last 21 games? He is hitting .417 with seven home runs and 21 RBI during that span. Semien leads the Southern League in runs scored (87), total bases (182), walks (80) and on-base percentage (.416).
