Play of the Day
Chris Sale went 7.2 scoreless innings last night, giving up just four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in the Sox’s 7-6, 12-inning loss to the first-place Tigers. Chris’ gem lowered his ERA to 2.97 and in the process he set the all-time franchise strikeout record for Sox lefthanders. He surpassed Sox All-Star Gary Peters’ mark of 215 set in 1967 and also recorded the most K’s by any Sox pitcher since 1912 when Hall of Famer Ed Walsh fanned 254. With 221 whiffs, Sale now ranks fifth in single-season strikeouts in Sox history with Walsh holding down the first four spots with 269 in 1908, 258 in 1910, 255 in 1911 and the 1912 total mentioned above.
Here are Chris and the man they called “Big Ed”:
Quote of the Day
Robin on Sale’s Cy Young Award chances:
“He’s as good as anybody in the league. I’ll put him up against anybody. Whether or not he’s in that conversation, other people get to vote on that. For me, he’s always going to be in the running for that kind of stuff.”
White Sox vs. Blue Jays at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN+) in a makeup game originally scheduled, but postponed, on June 12. Starters: LHP Jose Quintana (8-6, 3.49) for the Sox, LHP J.A. Happ (4-6, 4.82) for Toronto.
Did You Know…
…that the five rookies the White Sox had in the starting lineup last night–Leury Garcia, Marcus Semien, Avisail Garcia, Conor Gillaspie and Bryan Anderson–was the most since Jerry Owens, Josh Fields, Andy Gonzalez, Danny Richar and Donny Lucy started for the Sox in September of 2007?
Sox Note of Note
The White Sox have acquired LHP Frank De Los Santos from Tampa Bay for a player to be named later or cash considerations and he has been placed on the 40-man roster. De Los Santos, 25, was 2-2 with a 4.89 ERA over 30 games among three minor league levels this season including Class AAA. It is not related to the Jesse Crain deal.
