Today’s News

Rainout

The Sox-Indians game at Camelback Ranch-Glendale was rained out today. John Danks, the scheduled starter for the Sox, still got his work in. He threw three innings and 45 pitches in the cage.

Signed, Sealed and Delivered

The White Sox have agreed to terms on 2014 contracts with the following 24 players:

Pitchers (12) – Maikel Cleto, Frank De Los Santos, Erik Johnson, Nate Jones, Charlie Leesman, Nestor Molina, Jake Petricka, Jose Quintana, Andre Rienzo, Eric Surkamp, Donnie Veal and Daniel Webb

Catchers (2) – Adrian Nieto and Josh Phegley

Infielders (5) – Matt Davidson, Leury Garcia, Conor Gillaspie, Carlos Sanchez and Marcus Semien

Outfielders (5) – Jordan Danks, Adam Eaton, Avisail Garcia, Jared Mitchell and Trayce Thompson

With the signings, all members of the White Sox 40-man roster are under contract for the 2014 season.

Good Guys

Third base coach Joe McEwing, Jordan Danks and Semien stayed late after yesterday’s game to join three Dodgers players in hosting an on-field clinic for 50 kids from the Glendale Boys & Girls Club and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Phoenix.

Danks pretended to pitch home runs to kids while they practiced circling the bases in their own, unique home-run trot, in one of the funniest “stations.” McEwing practiced high and low fives with the kids, who rounded the bases with big smiles on their faces and to whoops from the other kids in attendance. Other stations featured hitting, throwing and fielding.

And everyone had time afterward for autographs on Sox jerseys and LA Dodgers caps.

Stay Tuned

The newly acquired right-hander Cleto, who was claimed off waivers from the Royals on Wednesday, faced hitters in a “simulated” inning this morning, giving Sox coaches a change to see him up close for the first time.

“Heavy, heavy ball,” said one.

Cleto, who frequently can top 100 mph with his pitches and has been recorded as high as 102 mph, has struggled with control over the years. If Don Cooper and the coaching staff can help him find the strike zone, we may have something.

Quote of the Day

Coop on Cleto: ”He’s a good arm in our system and we’ll see what we can do with him.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Rangers at Surprise (2:05p.m., CT). Starting Lineup: Eaton CF, A. Garcia, RF, Abreu 1B, Viciedo LF, Konerko DH, Gillaspie 3B, Ramirez SS, Flowers C, Beckham 2B, Paulino RHP.

Sox Notes of Note

Webb has left camp due to a death in the family and will be away for an undetermined amount of time…bullpen mate Matt Lindstrom has a very mild left oblique strain. He didn’t pitch in yesterday’s spring opener as a precaution and said today his concern is “probably zero”…Phegley most likely won’t play Sunday due to a bout of the flu…According to Robin, Jeff Keppinger’s shoulder is slowly getting better.
