Today’s News

“They’re scrapping and finding a way to do it, especially with all the injuries of guys going down, you just kind of have to find your way sometimes and scratch and claw and take what you can get. They’ve been doing that, which is good.”

—Robin Ventura‘s assessment of the 2014 Sox

Tonight’s Game

White Sox vs. Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, WCIU) in Game 3 of the Crosstown Cup series. Starters: LHP John Danks (2-2, 5.00) for the Sox, LHP Travis Wood (2-3, 3.35) for the North Siders.

Sox Starting Lineup: Beckham 2B, De Aza CF, Abreu 1B, Viciedo LF, Ramirez SS, Konerko DH, Sierra RF, Semien 3B, Nieto C.

Plays of the Day

Gordon Beckham‘s eighth-inning solo home run (his first homer of the year), which followed base hits in his three previous at-bats, broke a 1-1 tie in the Sox’s 5-1 win last night over the Cubs…In the ninth, Tyler Flowers doubled in the third run and Jordan Danks, who came into the game as a defensive replacement in the eighth, doubled in two more…Newly acquired outfielder Moises Sierra, a late insertion in the starting lineup, doubled and singled three times in his first start for his new team…Hector Noesi pitched five outstanding innings, allowing just a run, four hits and a walk with six strikeouts…Zach Putnam pitched two perfect innings and got credit for the win, Scott Downs pitched a scoreless eighth and Daniel Webb closed it out in the ninth.

The Beckham homer:

Gillaspie Returns

The Sox have returned third baseman Conor Gillaspie from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte and reinstated him from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Jordan Danks to the Knights.

Gillaspie has been on the disabled list since April 26 (retroactive to April 22) with a left hand contusion. Before heading to the DL, he was hitting .302 with seven doubles, 12 RBI and eight runs scored in 16 games this season.

Cover Boy

Jose Abreu has added another distinction to his early season success–a Sports Illustrated regional cover (May 12 issue) and feature story. Here’s a sidebar to the main story and the cover itself.

More Jose

And here he is doing an interview with ESPN’s Pedro Gomez:

Sox Notes of Note

Last night’s triumph was our third win in a row put us back at the .500 mark (17-17)…we are now 51-45 in the Crosstown Cup series and 26-21 at U.S. Cellular Field…the White Sox are way ahead of the pack with 33 ninth-inning runs. The Athletics and Rangers (21) and Diamondbacks and Mets (19) are next in line…with Beckham and Sierra each collecting four hits last night brought to mind the only other set of Sox teammates to record four hits in a game vs. the Cubs–A.J. Pierzynski and Alex Rios on June 11, 2010 in a 10-5 win at Wrigley Field…Sierra’s hits were a career-high and the most by a White Sox player in his first start with the team since Richie Zisk‘s first start on Opening Day,1977.

Quote of the Day

Robin on Noesi’s performance:

“He threw great. Even the last game he threw, he got through three and then that little bump with four, but he’s stretching it out where he’s throwing more pitches. He’s making that adjustment really on the fly. It’s impressive that he’s able to step in and give us that kind of effort.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN) in the finale of the four-game Crosstown Cup series. Starters: RHP Scott Carroll (1-1, 0.68) for the Sox, RHP Jake Arrieta (0-0, 0.00) for the Cubs.

Photo of the Day

Representing the Cubs, Jeff Samardzija presented Paul Konerko with a No. 14 from the Wrigley Field scoreboard before last night’s game on the occasion of the Sox captain’s last trip to Wrigley.
