Plays of the Day
Down 5-0 at the end of the first inning? It proved to be no problem for the Sox last night in the 7-6 comeback victory over the Royals as the combination of three homers and flawless bullpen work did the trick. Alexei Ramirez smashed his sixth homer of the season in the third inning, a three-run blast (click on top link below for video); Dayan Viciedo connected for this fourth of the year in the fourth, a solo shot (click on middle link) and Paul Konerko hit No. 2 with a man on in the fifth (click on bottom link) to give the Sox a lead they never relinquished. It was Paulie’s 436th career home run, good for 43rd place all-time…Zach Putnam, who earned his second win against no defeats, and Ronald Belisario each pitched a pair of scoreless, hitless innings. Scott Downs retired the only batter he faced in relief of an injured Matt Lindstrom, who started the ninth, and Jake Petricka closed it out for his first career save…Every hitter in the starting lineup collected a base hit in the 11-hit attack with Ramirez and Viciedo getting two apiece.
Lindstrom to DL, Sox Purchase Contract of Javy Guerra
The White Sox placed right-handed pitcher Matt Lindstrom on the 15-day disabled list with a sublexing peroneal (outside) tendon in his left ankle suffered in the ninth inning of last night’s game and purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Javy Guerra from Class AAA Charlotte.
Guerra, 28, is 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA and three saves in 14 relief appearances for Charlotte this season, limiting right-handed hitters to a .229 average. He was claimed by the Sox off waivers from the Dodgers at the end of March. He was 4-5 with a 2.90 ERA over parts of three seasons with LA, recording a 2.31 ERA with a team-high 21 saves in 23 chances as a rookie in 2011. He followed with a 2.60 ERA with eight saves in 2012.
Sox Notes of Note
Sox relievers have a 17 scoreless IP streak in the last five games. They have allowed just seven hits with 14 strikeouts. The bullpen owns a 2.07 ERA with 63 strikeouts since April 26, lowering the season ERA from 5.20 to 3.71 during that span. The 2.07 mark (since 4/26) is the lowest in the American League and second-lowest in the major leagues…Ramirez ranks among AL leaders in mult-hit games (1st, 18), hits (3rd, 57) and average (3rd, .322) and has played in an AL-leading 406 innings (out of a possible 410). Alexei also ranks among the AL leaders in batting average with two strikes (4th, .300), two outs (6th, .358) and runners in scoring position/two outs (T11th, .400)

Quotes of the Day
Chris Sale on the White Sox’ rash of injuries:
“We have to disinfect the clubhouse. We’re getting bit by the bug. Something’s going on. But you look around baseball and we’re doing a little better than most. You look around baseball–there’s freakish things happening around baseball for some reason, with pitchers and guys on field with obliques. Be thankful it’s not more.”
Pitching coach Don Cooper on Sale’s sideline session this afternoon and when he’ll be activated from the disabled list (via @CST_soxvan):
“It went well and next step is to decide when and where he does it (his next start).”
White Sox vs. Royals at Kauffman Stadium (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN). Starters: LHP Jose Quintana (2-3, 3.67) for the Sox, RHP Jeremy Guthrie (2-3, 4.76) for KC.
