The White Sox Participate in the PLAY Campaign
The PLAY campaign made its annual stop at U.S. Cellular Field today as children with intellectual and developmental disabilities participated without segregation or restriction.
Created in 2004 by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS), the PLAY (Promoting a Lifetime of Activity for Youth) program was formed to raise awareness about children’s health issues and the obesity epidemic in the United States. PLAY has conducted over 150 events inside all 30 major-league ballparks, reaching tens of thousands of America’s young people with positive messages about making healthy decisions and living a more active and healthy lifestyle.
White Sox Head Athletic Trainer Herm Schneider was joined by Assistant Athletic Trainer Brian Ball as they educated youngsters from the Chicago area about the importance of activity and healthy nutrition. Sox pitcher Nate Jones and hitting coach Todd Steverson helped put the group of kids through a series of stations which emphasize a healthy and active lifestyle as well as conducting a discussion about the dangers associated with steroids.
Also teaming up with PLAY and the Sox was Don Hooton Jr. of the Taylor Hooton Foundation, an organization that educates children of all ages about the dangers associated with steroid abuse.
