This Afternoon’s Game
White Sox vs. Mariners at Safeco Field (3:10 p.m., CT, WGN) in the finale of the four-game series as we go for the split after dropping the first two contests. Starters: LHP John Danks (9-7, 4.93) for the Sox, RHP Erasmo Ramirez (1-5, 4.35) for Seattle. Danks is 3-0 in his last five road starts.
Plays of the Day
Conor Gillaspie singled in the winning run in the 10th inning last night (click on link below) as the Sox defeated the Mariners, 2-1, and ruined an otherwise celebratory night in Seattle as former manager Lou Piniella was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame..starter Hector Noesi was brilliant against his former Seattle teammates, allowing only an unearned run, five hits and a lone walk in 7.1 innings…relievers Javy Guerra (1.0), Eric Surkamp (0.2) and Jake Petricka (1.0) closed it out with 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Surkamp got credit for his first win and Petricka chalked up his eighth save…we tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh on doubles by Jose Abreu and Alexei Ramirez…Jordan Danks, called up from Class AAA Charlotte earlier in the day when Adam Eaton was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique, pinch-hit in the 10th, reached base on a fielder’s choice, stole second, went to third on an error and scored the eventual game-winner on Gillaspie’s base hit.
The Americanization of Jose Abreu
Dayan Viciedo‘s home runs on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday represented the third time in his career that he homered in three consecutive games. Here they are:
Danish Throwing Zeros
The Sox’ 2013 No. 2 draft pick Tyler Danish (pictured below) tossed six no-hit innings last night for Class A Winston-Salem vs. Lynchburg. He has recorded 22 straight scoreless frames since July 23.
Quotes of the Day
Former Sox pitcher Brandon McCarthy, now with the Yankees, talked to the New York Post about a variety of subjects, including his time with the White Sox during our world championship year:
“Frank Thomas was my absolute god growing up, and we had lockers next to each other during (the 2005) season, and just being there and seeing some things with him during that World Series I’ll never forget.”
Jordan Danks on Avi Garcia‘s rehab assignment at Class AAA Charlotte, where Avi batted .500 in his first seven games (via @scottmerkin):
“He’s making a joke of the International League.”
