Tonight’s Game

White Sox vs. Orioles at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN) in the opener of a three-game series. Starters: LHP Chris Sale (10-2, 2.01) for the Sox, RHP Bud Norris (10-7, 3.75) for Baltimore on Sale t-shirt giveaway night. The O’s lead the American League East by seven games over the Yankees.

This will be Sale’s 20th start of the season and 13th at home. He is 7-2 with a 2.30 ERA and 99 strikeouts over 12 starts at home this season, nine of the quality variety.

Chris ranks among the American League leaders in ERA (2nd), WHIP (2nd, 0.88), opponents average (3rd, 10.38) and complete games (T3rd, 2).

The All-Star lefty had a no decision in his last start on August 2 in San Francisco, allowing only four hits over eight scoreless innings while striking out 12.

The White Sox scored six runs in the first inning yesterday, highlighted by Conor Gillaspie‘s first grand slam of his career and fifth homer of the season (click on top link below) and Jordan Danks‘ two-run blast (click on bottom link below) as the Sox came away with the 7-5 victory and a series win over the Jays. Danks, who hit his second roundtripper of the year, delivered his third RBI of game with a sac fly in the sixth…Starter Scott Carroll got credit for his fifth win and Jake Petricka came on in the ninth and recorded his ninth save.

Sox Notes of Note

The White Sox are now 14-11 against the American League East and 34-30 against teams with winning records heading into the Orioles series…Eric Surkamp made his fifth consecutve scoreless appearance yesterday and Zach Putnam, who pitched the eighth inning, hasn’t allowed an earned run since July 12 vs. the Indians…Petricka owns a 2.05 ERA over his last 21 outings–18 have been scoreless…Gillaspie matched his career high of four RBI…Jor. Danks recorded a career-high three RBI and in the seven games since rejoining the Sox he’s hitting .350…Alejandro De Aza is hitting .333 during his current six-game hitting streak…Jose Abreu is hitting .351 since June 15. The Astros All-Star Jose Altuve (.364) is the only American League player who has a higher average in the AL in that span.

JRW Back in Action

Looking to bounce back after yesterday’s loss to Las Vegas, Jackie Robinson West plays Cumberland, Rhode Island tonight at 7:00 p.m., CT (ESPN 2) in an elimination game at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa. Another viewing party is planned at Jackie Robinson Park.
