Quote of the Day
A humble Abreu talks about his team-first philosophy (via Dan Hayes of CSN):
“I don’t like to talk about myself. This is a team thing, but I’m very happy I’ve been able to hit for average and the results I’ve had individually. I’d like to have those as a team as well. The easy times, everybody wants them. The tough times really let you know who you are as a player and a team.”
White Sox vs. Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field in a split doubleheader made necessary by the June 10 postponement. Game 1 (12:05 p.m., CT, CSN+) starters: LHP Chris Sale for the Sox, RHP Max Scherzer (15-4, 3.13) for the Tigers. Game 2 (6:10 p.m., CT, WGN) starters: RHP Chris Bassitt, making his first major-league appearance, for the Sox and LHP Kyle Ryan, who is also making his big-league debut, for Detroit.
With Class AA Birmingham, Bassitt compiled a 3-1 record with a 1.56 ERA, a .206 average against, 36 strikeouts and 14 walks in 34.2 innings (six starts). He will be the 26th man on the roster for the twin bill, but will remain with the Sox for the remainder of the season.
In addition to the special nature of the doubleheader itself, there is going to be a great deal of excitement at the ballpark tomorrow. The K Zone should be rocking with Sale on the mound vs. defending AL Cy Young winner Scherzer in the matinee. In the nightcap, all eyes will be on Bassitt’s appearance and before Game 2 the youngsters from the Jackie Robinson West Little League will be honored and Tony LaRussa will be signing autographs and throwing out a ceremonial first pitch. Topping it off, the first 20,000 fans attending tomorrow night will receive a LaRussa bobblehead and the new Hall of Famer’s plaque will be on display.
More on JRW ceremony: The White Sox will pay tribute to the U.S. Little League champions with the following…
* A $20,000 donation from Chicago White Sox Charities
* A plaque honoring JRW will be installed at U.S. Cellular Field in time for next season
* All the members of the team will receive Sox jerseys with their own uniform numbers and signed by the 2014 White Sox
* A Sox backpack filled with back-to-school supplies
The White Sox also are encouraging fans to wear gold in honor of Jackie Robinson West.
