Today’s News

Tonight’s Game

White Sox vs. Royals at Kauffman Stadium (7:10 p.m., CT, WCIU) in the rubber match of the three-game series. Starters: LHP Chris Sale (12-3, 1.99) for the Sox, RHP Yordano Ventura (12-9, 3.25) for KC. Sale earned the win in his last start on September 11 against the A’s, allowing just two hits over eight innings while striking out nine and walking only a pair.

With less than two weeks remaining in the season, there’s been a great deal of buzz about Sale’s American League Cy Young Award candidacy–and rightly so. Chris leads the AL in ERA, opponents average (.198) and SO/9.0 IP (10.60), is tied for the league lead in WHIP (0.92) and is sixth in strikeouts (192).

Sale is attempting to become the first Sox pitcher to lead the league in ERA since Joel Horlen in 1967 (2.08). His 1.99 mark would be the lowest by a Sox pitcher since Wilbur Wood (1.91) in 1971. Sale’s .198 opponent batting average would be third-best in Sox history behind Hall of Famer Ed Walsh (.187 in 1910) and Horlen (.190 in 1964).

Plays of the Day

With the White Sox trailing 5-4 heading into the seventh inning last night in KC, Conor Gillaspie tripled with the bases loaded to give the Sox a 7-5 lead that they never relinquished (click on top link below)…after knocking out three hits on Monday night, Adam Eaton pounded out four more in the Sox victory. He tripled, doubled, singled twice, scored two runs and raised his batting average to .303, which ranks eighth among AL hitters (click on bottom link below)…Jose Abreu (his 103rd), Alexei Ramirez, Josh Phegley and Carlos Sanchez each added an RBI. Eric Surkamp got credit for his second win with an inning of scoreless relief and Zach Putnam chalked up his fifth save by tossing a 1-2-3 ninth.

Konerko is White Sox Clemente Nominee

Paulie has been named the White Sox nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing the MLB player who best represents the game through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement. Konerko will be honored at the ballpark on September 26.

Each of the 30 clubs nominates one team member in an effort to pay tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. The winner will be selected by a panel of dignitaries and a fan vote, which will count as one vote in the total.

Quote of the Day

Abreu on PK:

“I look up to Paul and admire him for everything he has done. I’m very lucky and fortunate to have Paul as a teammate and see how he goes about his business day in and day out. Even though it’s his last season, I still see him working very hard. He is working as hard as he did from day one.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

Off Day. On Friday, it’s the White Sox vs. Rays at Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg (6:10p.m., CT, CSN) in the opener of a three-game series. Starters: LHP Jose Quintana (8-10, 3.30) for the Sox, TBA for Tampa Bay.
