Playing the spoiler in last night’s 2-0 victory, the White Sox stalled Detroit’s run toward the American League Central title. The Tigers lead over the Royals is now just one game. KC, the Sox’ next opponent, is in the second wild-card spot, a game behind the A’s and two games ahead of the Mariners.
Plays of the Day
Rookie Chris Bassitt shut out the tough Tigers lineup for 7.2 innings (click on top link below) and Tyler Flowers provided all the offense needed with a two-run homer in the second inning, his 15th (click on second link), as the Sox blanked the Tigers last night for their second straight win on the road. It was Chris’ first major-league victory…Jake Petricka came on in relief of Bassitt with two outs in the eighth and retired the last four batters for his 14th save…Avi Garcia made a terrific catch off the bat of Miguel Cabrera with Torii Hunter on first to end the third inning, preventing extra bases and possibly a run (click on third link)…Carlos Sanchez made a couple of outstanding plays, including a barehanded gem (please click on bottom link):

Quote of the Day
From Paul Sullivan’s piece on Konerko in the Trib:
“In the end, however, numbers won’t define Konerko’s legacy in Chicago. Perhaps no fan base has related to a star player the way Sox fans have over the last 16 years with Konerko. They see the work ethic, the humility, the lack of pretense, the common-sense approach to his job, and they feel like they’re looking in a mirror.”
White Sox vs. Tigers at Comerica Park (12:08 p.m., CT, CSN) in the finale of the three game series and nine-game road trip. Starters: LHP Chris Sale (12-4, 2.20), making his final start of the season for the Sox, RHP Justin Verlander (14-12, 4.68) for Detroit.
