This Afternoon’s Game
White Sox vs. Tigers at Comerica Park (12:08 p.m., CT, CSN) in the rubber match of the three-game series and finale of the nine-game road trip that represented the final “away” games of the season. Starters: LHP Chris Sale (12-4, 2.20) for the Sox, RHP Justin Verlander (14-12, 4.68) for Detroit.
Chris will be making his 26th and final start in what has been an outstanding season for him personally. He ranks among the American League leaders in ERA (1st), strikeouts per nine innings (1st, 10.61), WHIP (2nd, 0.96), opponents average (3rd, .205) and strikeouts (6th, 198).
Chris is 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA, 69 strikeouts and a .222 opponents average over 10 road starts this season. He has a lifetime 2.93 ERA vs. the Tigers and earned the win in his last start on August 30 against Detroit, allowing three runs and six hits over seven innings.
Sale needs two strikeouts to join Ed Walsh (1907-08, ’10-12), Tom Bradley (1971-72) and Javier Vazquez (2007-08) as the only pitchers in club history to record 200 in consecutive seasons. The Sox’ ace is also attempting to become the first Sox pitcher to lead the AL in ERA since Joel Horlen in 1967 (2.08).
Sox Starting Lineup: Eaton CF, Ramirez SS, Abreu 1B, Gillaspie 3B, A. Garcia RF, Viciedo DH, Jor. Danks LF, Flowers C, Semien 2B.
Plays of the Day
Scott Carroll followed Chris Bassitt‘s Monday night gem with a quality start of his own in last night’s 4-3 loss to the Tigers. Carroll tossed six innings and faced one batter in the seventh, allowing just one unearned run on five hits…Stymied by David Price through eight innings and trailing 3-0, the Sox rallied against the former Cy Young Award winner in the ninth to tie the score. Adam Eaton led off the inning with his second single of the game, raising his batting average to an even .300. Alexei Ramirez doubled with Eaton going to third and with one out Avi Garcia singled in both runners (click on top link below). Paul Konerko delivered a two-out single, sending Garcia to third and then Marcus Semien singled to drive in Avi to make it 3-3 (click on bottom link below)…The Tigers scored the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth.

Paulie, on the Sox’ season, via @CSNHayes:
“The record can be a little bit misleading. This team has really made a lot of good changes and really is in a much better spot.”

Paulie’s Sox career began in 1999…and all these years later he was honored by yet another divisional rival during the last road series of his playing career. That’s Konerko’s former Sox teammate Omar Vizquel, now the Tigers’ first-base coach, making the presentation last night in Detroit.
