Samardzija to Make Sox Debut in Game 1, Quintana Will Go in Game 2
Robin Ventura made it official yesterday. Jeff Samardzija will be the White Sox’ Opening Day starter when the Sox face the Royals April 6 in Kansas City.
With Chris Sale still on the mend from the fracture in his right foot, the Shark gets the call while also making his debut in a Sox uniform.
Jose Quintana will be on the mound for the club’s second game two days later on April 8.
This Afternoon’s Game
White Sox vs. Dodgers at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (3:05 p.m., CT, CSN). Probable Starters: RHP Brad Penny for the Sox, LHP Clayton Kershaw for L.A.
Last Night’s Highlights
Sox 6, Royals 0 at Surprise…Carlos Rodon was outstanding last night with his college catcher and former roommate, Brett Austin, as his batterymate. In four innings of work, the highly touted rookie pitcher from North Carolina State struck out nine, allowing only four hits without allowing a walk (see video below)…Chris Beck followed Rodon and was superb, pitching three scoreless innings and allowing just two hits along with a pair of strikeouts…Scott Carroll and Arcenio Leon pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, respectively…Offensively, Keon Barnum smashed a three-run home run, Avi Garcia hit a solo shot, Melky Cabrera singled in a run and J.B. Shuck doubled in Emilio Bonifacio, who tripled.

Quotes of the Day
Rodon has impressed his teammates during his short stay in pro ball. The following is a good example why:
“The last thing you want to do is open up and talk a lot. Best thing to do is listen because you learn a lot more when you listen instead of speaking up and talking a lot. And that’s the last thing the older guys want to hear is a rook that hasn’t been in it before and has never been a part of it and start opening up and just talking.”
An anonymous observer made the following comment on last night’s Sox battery of Rodon and Austin:
“To think that a year ago, these two were getting ready for Duke.”
Brand new this season: Samardzija’s Shark Cage in Sections 154 and 155. Fans will get a free cap and strikeout card with a ticket ($20 for most games with some exceptions).
White Sox vs. Cubs at Mesa (3:05 p.m., CT, WGN). Probable Starters: RHP Samardzija for the Sox, RHP Jason Hammel for the North Siders.

This is something you don’t see every day–a father and son exchanging the lineup cards at home plate. Here Royals’ third base coach Mike Jirschele and son Justin, an infielder in the Sox’ minor-league system, do the honors before last night’s game.
