Redbirds Beware (of the Dreaded Sale K)
Tuesday, June 30, 2015
White Sox vs. Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis (7:15 p.m. CT, CSN) in the opener of a two-game series and the last leg of the eight-game road trip. Probable Starters: LHP Chris Sale (6-4, 3.02) for the Sox, RHP Lance Lynn (5-4, 2.84) for the Cards.
Sale is scheduled to make his 15th start of the season and eighth on the road. He is 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA and 83 strikeouts lifetime during interleague play. He is making his first career appearance vs. the Cardinals.
Chris joins Hall of Famers Pedro Martinez (seven and eight), Randy Johnson (seven) and Nolan Ryan (seven) as the only pitchers since 1900 to strike out 10-plus in at least seven consecutive starts. Sale shares the MLB record of five straight starts of 12 or more strikeouts with Johnson and Martinez, accomplishing the feat from May 28-June 19.
The Sox ace is on pace to record a franchise-record 286 strikeouts, which would be the highest total in the major leagues since Johnson fanned 290 in 2004. He also has an average of 12.18 strikeouts per nine innings, which would be the highest for a starting pitcher since Johnson averaged 13.41 in 2001. Sale’s 129 strikeouts already are the fourth-highest total in Sox history before the break, just 13 behind the club record of 142 set by Wilbur Wood in 1973 and his 63 strikeouts in June are a club record for any month.
Sale has struck out 10 or more batters 26 times in 99 career starts, 12 or more 15 times and has recorded six games with 10-plus strikeouts and no walks.
Melky Heating Up
Melky Cabrera went 3-4 against the Tigers on Sunday, including a 450-foot home run off of Detroit ace David Price, and has five hits in his last 11 at bats plus a pair of walks. The homer was Cabrera’s longest since 2009 (click on link below):

Adam Eaton on learning from his early-season struggles (via @CSNHayes):
“I’ve developed and learned a lot in the last month, two months and hopefully will start to get back to the way I need to play and the way I need to go about things. I think I’ve learned something new every day and hopefully can get back to where I need to be offensively and defensively.”

As stated above, Sale is on pace to set the White Sox season strikeout mark. Who holds the record? That’s Hall of Famer Ed Walsh, who struck out 269 in 1908. Walsh also holds the second (258 in 1910), third (255 in 1911) and fourth (254 in 1912) highest season totals. Chris ranks fifth (226 in 2013).
