Today’s News

This Afternoon’s Game

White Sox vs. Blue Jays at U.S. Cellular Field (1:10 p.m. CT, CSN) in the finale of the four-game set as we go for the series win. Probable Starters: RHP Jeff Samardzija (5-4, 4.33) for the Sox, RHP R.A. Dickey (3-9, 5.02) for Toronto.

Shark is set to make his 18th start of the season, seventh at home and second against the Blue Jays. He received his second consecutive no decision in his last start on July 4 vs. the Orioles, allowing just one run on three hits over 7.2 innings in the 3-2 Sox win.

Last Night’s Highlights

Adam Eaton emerged as the night’s biggest hero with his 11th-inning walk-off homer from the leadoff spot, giving the White Sox a dramatic 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the Blue Jays…Huge credit also has to be given to the Sox bullpen–Scott Carroll (2.2 IP), Zach Duke (2.0), David Robertson (1.0) and Zach Putnam (1.0)–which shut out the tough Toronto lineup for 6.2 innings in relief of John Danks…In a 16-hit attack, Avi Garcia pounded out a season-high four hits with a run batted in; Eaton and Adam LaRoche collected two hits and two RBI apiece; Carlos Sanchez had two hits and an RBI; Jose Abreu and Tyler Flowers recorded two hits each and Melky Cabrera added a hit and a run batted in.

Quote of the Day

Cubs’ manager Joe Maddon on the Sox, as the two clubs get set to face each other this weekend.

“I look at their lineup and I know these guys. They’re good. They’re really good. I’ve seen it firsthand.”

Sox Notes of Note

Last night’s thriller represented the White Sox’ 23rd comeback win this season. The Sox are 8-2 in extra innings and 18-15 in one-run games…Eaton hit his sixth homer of the season, first walk-off and second career game-ending home run. It was the White Sox seventh walk-off hit and second walk-off roundtripper of the year (Gordon Beckham on June 21 vs. Texas was the first)…Abreu has hit safely in 10 consecutive games (.310), his second longest streak of the season (17)…Garcia has hit safely in nine of his last 10 (.436)…Cabrera (.400) and Alexei Ramirez (.435) both have seven-game streaks…Robertson has worked 13 scoreless innings with 18 strikeouts in non-save situations.

2005 Flashback

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Sox’ championship season…

In Game 83 on July 6, the first-place White Sox completed the home sweep of Tampa Bay with a 7-2 triumph. Jose Contreras notched his fourth victory of the season, Frank Thomas belted a three-run homer (No. 11) and Tad Iguchi, Carl Everett and Juan Uribe each added an RBI. With their 57th win of the year, the Sox went 31 games over the .500 mark.

Photo of the Day

Eaton is the first White Sox leadoff hitter to hit a walk-off home run since Scott Podsednik‘s legendary blow in Game 2 of the 2005 World Series (see photo below). That final score was 7-6 as well.
