GM Hahn on Day One: “We Feel Well-Positioned to Contend”
Friday, February 19, 2016
Pitchers and catchers and a host of position players were on hand today at Camelback Ranch-Glendale for the first day of spring training camp. The photo above (courtesy of @CST_soxvan) shows skipper Robin Ventura and new bench coach Rick Renteria keeping a close eye on recently signed righty Mat Latos. And, yes, that’s White Sox GM Rick Hahn on the far right in the white sweater. He told the media that the Sox are ready to contend.
Pictured below are closer David Robertson and last year’s No. 1 draft pick Carson Fulmer speaking to the media earlier today and a trio of pitchers waiting for their turn to throw. Fulmer, by the way, is wearing No. 80–the same number Carlos Rodon wore last spring–and has taken Rodon’s 2015 locker as well.
Navarro Fan Club
Some of the talk today focused on newly acquired catcher Dioner Navarro. The 12-year veteran from Venezuela seems to have gotten a couple of pretty impressive endorsements. Latos, a battery mate of Navarro’s with the Reds, indicated that Dioner’s presence was one of the reasons he chose to join the Sox. If that weren’t enough praise, John Danks said former Sox star hurler Mark Buehrle is very high on ex-Jays teammate Navarro. “That’s all I need to know,” Danks said.
Quotes of the Day
* Navarro on Chris Sale:
“He’s got way better stuff than Mark (Buehrle)–yeah, I said it.”
* Sale on making the playoffs:
“It’s the only reason we are here…”
RIP Tony Phillips
Former White Sox super-utility player Tony Phillips has passed away at the age of 56 as a result of a heart attack.
Sportswriter Rick Bozich put it nicely: “Could play every position, hit leadoff and play with an edge for 162.”
