Latos to Make Cactus League Debut Today; Sox Shine on Defense

Today’s Spring Training News

This Afternoon’s Game

White Sox vs. Giants at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (3:05 p.m. CT, CSN). Mat Latos (pictured above), making his first Cactus League start, and Nate Jones are among those scheduled to pitch for the Sox.

Yesterday’s Highlights

On Sunday, outfielder Jerry Sands belted two homers and drove in three in the Sox’ win over the A’s. Yesterday, he made a spectacular catch in left field saving a pair of runs in the Good Guys’ 9-4 loss to the Indians in Goodyear…Melky Cabrera homered and doubled, Todd Frazier singled twice and drove in a run, Tyler Saladino doubled in a run and Brett Lawrie added an RBI…In addition to Sands, a number of Sox made key defensive plays–Austin Jackson, Carlos Sanchez, Jose Abreu, Lawrie and Jacob May.

Roster Moves

The White Sox optioned RHP Erik Johnson to Class AAA Charlotte and reassigned RHP Tyler Danish and INF-OF Steve Lombardozzi to minor-league camp.

Quote of the Day

With Johnson headed to Charlotte, pitching coach Don Cooper is looking for today’s starting pitcher to fit into the starting rotation:

“Latos is now going to be given the real opportunity to see if he can take it and grab it and run with it.”
