This Afternoon’s Game
White Sox vs. Rangers at U.S. Cellular Field (1:10 p.m. CT, CSN) as the Sox go for the three-game sweep. Starting Pitchers: RHP Mat Latos (3-0, 0.49) for the Sox, LHP Derek Holland (2-0, 2.70) for Texas.
Latos is set to make his fourth start of the season and second at home. He earned his third straight win in his last start on April 19 vs. the Angels, allowing just two hits over 6.1 scoreless innings.
When all was said and done, Jose Abreu‘s single with the bases loaded and one out in the 11th inning proved to be the difference as the Sox came away with a thrilling 4-3 walk-off victory over the Rangers at USCF. The Good Guys are now 12-6 and a half-game ahead of the Royals in the A.L. Central.
The Sox tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth on a Todd Frazier solo homer, his fifth, and Dioner Navarro singled home the lead run later in the inning. The Rangers tied it at 3-3 in the top of the ninth and the game headed into extra innings. Frazier came thisclose to another homer with two gone in the bottom of the frame–which would have ended the game–but Texas right fielder Nomar Mazara leaped over the wall to prevent the potential game-winner.
In the bottom of the 11th, Navarro walked, Austin Jackson was hit by a pitch and Adam Eaton walked, loading the bases. After Navarro was forced out at home on a ground ball, Abreu performed his heroics.
Carlos Rodon bounced back nicely from his last start, allowing just two runs, two hits and two walks along with seven strikeouts (a season-high). Matt Albers pitched a scoreless 11th and earned his first win of the season. He has now thrown 32 consecutive scoreless innings over his last 29 appearances dating back to last year. Melky Cabrera slammed his second homer, a solo blast, and singled twice. Jimmy Rollins had a pair of singles.
Here are the Frazier and Cabrera homers–and a fabulous play by Brett Lawrie behind second base:
