Baskets for Charity
Below is a preview of three baskets containing White Sox players’ favorite things, which will be auctioned off as part of the eighth annual Sox Serve Week, scheduled from Monday, June 6, through Sunday, June 12. Sox wives and girlfriends have been encouraged to put together baskets of their significant others’ favorites, aiming to stick with one theme within the basket.
Fans will have the opportunity to bid on these baskets, which include autographed items, on Thursday, June 9, from 5:40 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Fans attending the game vs. the Washington Nationals can place bids in person with the wives by visiting the Miller Lite Extra Base Lounge (near Section 157) or by phone at 312-674-5684.
Courtney Jennings, Dan Jennings’ wife, pictured above:
“I kind of made it a backyard basket because Dan and I love to be outside.
“One of our favorite things to do is play games with our friends, so I put the Spike Ball game in there because it’s something to play. I also put a picnic blanket in there; we like to spend a lot of time outside or on the beach. A s’mores thing is included because we love our s’mores with our two-year-old little girl.
“Some of my other favorite things that I put in were gift cards to our favorite places to eat–takeout spots like Buffalo Wild Wings. I also put a crossword book in there because Dan loves to do crosswords, especially when he’s on the road. I also put in a Google Chromecast because we’ve been watching Netflix and streaming things on Hulu–it’s the only way we have to watch Game of Thrones. We bring that out on Sunday nights.
“Dan signed a pair of game-used cleats and also signed a brand new baseball. We included some other baseballs by some favorite White Sox players, too.”
What is the story behind his signature?
“First of all, it’s beautiful. It’s much prettier than mine. He writes one of his favorite Bible verses with it because faith is really important to him. That’s his way that he can kind of pass the message along when he signs his autograph.”
What is your record against him in outdoor games?
“I should probably say that he wins most of the time, but he’s a little bit of a sore loser. Sometimes I might let him win because, otherwise, it might end up bad for me later. He’s pretty competitive, so we have a lot of fun with it.”
Ashley Paddock, Carlos Rodon’s girlfriend, pictured below:
“The bag is a huge part of the basket. It’s a sports bag and it has ozone in it, so you put your cleats or your gear in there and it actually kills all the scent and bacteria. For any parents out there with kids in high school, for instance, it’s super great.
“Carlos also signed a couple cleats, a ball and a signed hat. I put the Yeti cup in there because who doesn’t love Yeti? It’s a super staple of all the baseball players. We stuck in some golf balls because he loves golf, Red Bull because he drinks it every morning, Chick-fil-A and Cold Stone because we do that in spring training. We threw in a Lefty shirt. We took our family pictures in that shirt because our dog’s name is Lefty.”
How did you decide on the Reese’s, another item you included?
“He’s obsessed with Reese’s. It might not be his super favorite, but it’s what I always bring home and he always eats it. I told him, ‘That’s what I’m getting.’”
What do you and Carlos order from Cold Stone?
“I’m a Cookie Doughn’t You Want Some kind of girl, and he’s a Create Your Own, throwing in some Fruity Pebbles and Kit Kats. It would gross you out, but he is so funny.”
Did you enjoy putting the basket together?
“He loved it–he thinks it’s funny. He didn’t realize the variety of things inside. They said to try and make the basket one simple theme and good Lord, we have too many interests. Between eating, hunting and fishing, we have way too much going on.”
Dana Long, Brett Lawrie’s wife, pictured below:
“We have a signed bat, so that’s kind of what I’m trying to build around. I started to go a little golf-themed–golf balls, golf tees–because during the offseason, I don’t see much of Brett because he would prefer to see the golf course (laughs).
“Anybody who knows Brett knows that he is kind of a candy-aholic, so we threw in some Sour Patch, Starbucks and Hershey’s candies. I think it’s not a very well-kept secret that Brett has a lot of energy, so the Red Bull is kind of his go-to. He loves Red Bull. We’re both pretty big wine people. We went to Napa Valley last year at the All-Star Break, so we put a bottle of wine and two glasses in there. Then, just some gift cards to his favorite spots—iTunes (huge music person), Cheesecake Factory and Starbucks. He loves his Starbucks.”
Starbucks drink of choice?
I got him kind of hooked on Shaken Iced Green Tea Lemonade. He’s big on the fruity Starbucks drinks.
How do you spend your time when he is at the golf course?
“We have a one-year-old German Shepherd who keeps me a little busy right now. While Brett is golfing, I’ll go hiking with our dog.”
