Today’s News

This Afternoon’s Game

White Sox vs. Royals at U.S. Cellular Field (1:10 p.m., CT, CSN) in the finale of the three-game series. Starters: RHP Andre Rienzo (4-3, 5.25) for the Sox, RHP James Shields (7-3, 3.34) for Kansas City.

Sox Starting Lineup: Eaton CF, Beckham 2B, Gillaspie 3B, Abreu 1B, Dunn DH, Ramirez SS, Viciedo RF, De Aza LF, Nieto C.

Plays of the Day

Paul Konerko hit a solo homer, his fourth blast of the season, and collected a pair of singles while Javy Guerra tossed 2.1 IP of scoreless relief in yesterday’s loss to the Royals. And the Sox executed a great relay throw in the ninth–from right fielder Moises Sierra to second baseman Gordon Beckham to third baseman Leury Garcia to prevent the Royals’ Nori Aoki from stretching a double into a triple. Here’s the play:  http://m.mlb.com/video/v33711903

Transactions

The Sox have acquired outfielder Michael Taylor from the Oakland A’s for Kannapolis right-handed pitcher Jacob Sanchez. Taylor, who saw major-league action with the A’s from 2011-13, is headed to Class AAA Charlotte…the Sox have also signed righty reliever Henry Rodriguez and assigned him to Charlotte, where he’ll begin on the disabled list. He has spent time in the majors with four different teams.

Sox Notes of Note

Adam Eaton has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games, including five times on Friday night. Eaton is hitting .333 with five walks and a .438 on-base percentage over his last seven games…with the College World Series now underway in Omaha, Sox skipper Robin Ventura has been ranked No. 2 among the Top 25 major league players who have made an impact on the CWS according to an ESPN panel of five college baseball and MLB draft experts. Robin played in the college classic twice with Oklahoma State.

Quote of the Day

Jose Abreu on hitting in his home ballpark:

“One of the things is that wherever you hit the ball here, it can go out. You have a chance to go out anywhere in here. Not only to left, but to right and center. Hitting in this field is comfortable. It’s appealing. You can see the ball well. That’s one of the things I really like.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

Off Day. On Tuesday, it will be the White Sox vs. the Giants at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN) in the opener of a brief two-game interleague series. Starters: LHP John Danks (5-5, 4.17) for the Sox, RHP Matt Cain (1-4, 3.84) for San Francisco.

Despite absorbing his first defeat of the season in last night’s loss to the Tigers, Chris Sale (5-1) was outstanding. In seven innings of work, he gave up just one run and five hits while striking out 10–and lowered his ERA to 1.97. Chris recorded his 13th career double-digit strikeout game and third of the season. His career mark is now tied for third in franchise history with Javier Vazquez. It was also his third career outing with at least 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Avi Begins the Road Back

With Sox trainer Herm Schneider watching, Avi Garcia celebrated his 23rd birthday yesterday by playing catch for the first time since his shoulder injury.

Looking into the Future

I was at our Camelback Ranch facility in Glendale today and had the opportunity to see U.S. Olympic speed skater Eddy Alvarez (in top photo below), who signed with us earlier this week, take batting practice. Also there was Micker Adolfo Zapata (bottom photo), the Dominican outfielder who signed with the Sox a year ago when he was 16. Upon signing, Micker was the No. 2 ranked international prospect by MLB.com.

World Cup Fever in the White Sox Clubhouse

With the World Cup kicking off today in Brazil, a couple of Sox teammates, Brazilian Andre Rienzo and Cuban Alexei Ramirez, have initiated a friendly wager.

If Brazil wins, Ramirez will have to be photographed wearing a Brazilian jersey. If Argentina wins, Rienzo will have to don and be photographed wearing the jersey of his country’s fiercest rival.

“I hope Brazil wins, because if I get a picture of me (with the Argentina jersey) people will kill me,” Rienzo admitted.

Here is Rienzo (with his arms around teammates Javy Guerra and Eaton) and teammates showing off their World Cup pride. Other Sox (from left to right) are: Dayan Viciedo, Jose Quintana, Ramirez and Abreu. (Photo compliments of the Trib’s Colleen Kane).

Quote of the Day

GM Rick Hahn on the Sox draft:

“We’re thrilled with our draft. Taking Carlos (Rodon) in the first round, we get a high-ceiling, close-to-the-majors potential front-end piece to fit in with this rebuilding plan that we have going on now.

“But behind him, in being able to get Spencer Adams in the second round–a high-ceiling high school kid, who a lot of people thought would be gone in the first round–was a nice follow-up. The kid, (Jace) Fry, we took in the third, was the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and is a polished left-handed starter who potentially could come quick as well.

“There’s a lot of other guys of note that we were pleased to get, but I think those first three really set a great tone there.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, WCIU). Probable starters: LHP John Danks (4-5, 4.32) for the Sox, RHP Justin Verlander (6-5, 4.19) for Detroit.

A Fitting Tribute to Paulie

Former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Fred Claire posted the following commentary on his Facebook page along with a link to a story in the Los Angeles Times praising the Sox captain.

“Paul Konerko is a Hall of Fame person and has had a great Major League career.  I recall his excitement after the Dodgers had drafted him and he has been a true professional from day one and every step of the way. For young players who want to know how to handle a career in the game my advice would be to follow the path of Paul Konerko on and off the field.”

Quote of the Day

Jose Abreu on his encounter over the weekend with future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols:

“He was taking BP and he stepped out of BP just to come out and say hello to me and talk to me which is incredible. That’s one of the reasons why we admire him so much, the kind of people he is, the kind of professional he is. We talk about a lot of things and I’m very thankful for the advice he gives me. He’s definitely a person all baseball players admire and he’s a role model for all of us.’’

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN). Starters: LHP John Danks (4-5, 4.32) for the Sox, RHP Justin Verlander (6-5, 4.19) for Detroit.
