Sox Starting Lineup: Eaton CF, Beckham 2B, Gillaspie 3B, Abreu 1B, Dunn DH, Ramirez SS, Viciedo RF, De Aza LF, Flowers C.

Plays of the Day

Jose Abreu led off the Sox scoring in the first inning with his 20th homer, a two-run shot, and Adam Dunn blasted his 12th, a three-run job in the fifth, as the Sox on the strength of a 12-hit attack defeated the Giants and Tim Hudson, 7-2, to sweep the two-game series…Alejandro De Aza was a homer shy of the cycle, Tyler Flowers drove in a pair with a single and Conor Gillaspie collected a pair of hits and scored a run against his former teammates…Chris Sale improved his record to 6-1, allowing three runs, eight hits and a walk while striking out seven in six-plus innings. More Jose

With his home run yesterday, Abreu (58 games) is the third-fastest player in major-league history to reach 20 career home runs. Only Wally Berger (51) in 1930 and Mark McGwire (56) in 1987 did it in less time. Jose is also the third-fastest White Sox player to reach 20 homers in a season, behind only Hall of Famer Frank Thomas (46 games in 1994) and Jim Thome (49 in ’06).

Sale’s Figures

Sale moved to 3-0 with a 2.54 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 14 career interleague games. He is 3-1 with a 2.00 ERA and 56 strikeouts over his last seven starts, limiting the opposition to a .151 average.

Dunn Ties Yaz

Dunn’s homer was the 452nd of his career, which ties him with Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski for 35th all-time.

Sox Notes of Note

The White Sox swept the Giants for the second consecutive time (also, May 16-18 at At&T Park in San Francisco). The Sox now lead the all-time series 6-2 and are 181-140 (.564) vs. the National League since interleague play began…the Sox’ game with the Tigers that was postponed on June 10 will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday, August 30 with start times at 12:10 p.m. and 6:10 p.m. Game tickets and parking coupons from the postponed game can only be used for the first game of the twin bill.

Homecoming

Ozzie Guillen made his first trip to U.S. Cellular Field yesterday since leaving in 2011 after eight years as the Sox skipper.

It was a logical time for Guillen. He came to see his godson, Ehire Adrianza, who started at shortstop for the Giants. Ozzie also said he wanted to see a few of the Giants’ Venezuelan players and San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy.

Guillen arrived late at the ballpark and didn’t visit with any of the Sox before the game, but caught up with friend and former teammate Robin Ventura following the Sox’ victory (photo compliments of the Sun-Times’ Daryl Van Schouwen).

Konerko and Jim Thome and their families founded the campaign in 2007 and Gordon Beckham joined the effort three years later. In the first seven years of the program, the campaign has raised nearly $450,000 through more than 600 individual donors, while touching the lives of more than 1,500 children.

Quote of the Day

Robin on the Sox’ opponents interest in Abreu:

“They’re just impressed with his professionalism. He’s not a flamboyant guy, but he comes to work. I think they come out, even for BP, and watch him.

“I think everybody’s interested because they’ve heard about him but they haven’t seen him, so everybody comes out to watch. That’s the first thing they notice, is how he goes about his work. He’s very meticulous and professional about his work, and I think people appreciate that.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

Plays of the Day

Only the elements could stop Chris Sale last night as the Sox ace pitched three scoreless, hitless innings with four strikeouts before the long rain delay. When the game resumed, Sale didn’t return but his teammates provided enough support for the Sox to emerge with the 2-1 victory…Scott Carroll (pictured below), who earned his second win of the season and first in relief, came to the rescue of Sale and went three scoreless innings. Jake Petricka added two of his own and Ronald Belisario chalked up his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth…Three hot Sox hitters continued to roll. Gordon Beckham cranked a solo homer, his fourth, and a double, Conor Gillaspie singled, walked twice and drove in a run and Alexei Ramirez had a pair of hits.

Quotes of the Day

Here’s an excerpt from Scott Merkin‘s mlb.com story on last night’s game, which ended around 1:00 a.m. today.

As questions were being asked of the White Sox ace, Adam Dunn strode toward his locker and couldn’t pass up the chance to take a humorous shot at his teammate making his second start since coming off of a five-week stint on the disabled list for a flexor muscle strain in his left arm.

“Look at this,” said Dunn of Sale’s postgame interview session. “He threw three innings.”

“And he did it yesterday,” added John Danks with a laugh.

Today’s News

This Afternoon’s Game

White Sox vs. Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field (1:10, CT, CSN) in the finale of the four-game series. Having won the first two games and lost yesterday’s extra-inning affair, the Sox need a win to take the series from the Bronx Bombers and also are looking to clinch their third straight home series win. Starters: RHP Andre Rienzo (4-0, 4.00) for the Sox, RHP Masahiro Tanaka (6-1, 2.39) for New York.

Plays of the Day

In eight innings of work, he didn’t allow a run, gave up only three hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out four…Dayan ViciedoAdam Dunn and Alexei Ramirez drove in the Sox runs and Adam Eaton and Gordon Beckham collected three hits apiece. “Flow has been a big part of us being where we’re at. He’s taking the ball the other way, he’s balanced, strikeouts are down. He’s hit a couple of big homers for us. He’s had a nice little stretch here while playing a very demanding position. He’s in a nice spot.”

Abreu 5.23

Jose

Jose Abreu met with the media before last night’s game. He will be in a walking boot for a couple more days and is hoping to begin baseball activities on Monday.

Quote of the Day

Here’s part of what Abreu told the media, through an interpreter:

“We have a saying in Spanish, it’s hard to see the bulls from far away. You want to be down there with them. It’s very difficult but we’re dealing with it the best we can. We’re just trying to do everything we can to get back to the field as soon as possible…I wish my team could win every time I’m not there. It is a difficult time.”

Plays of the Day

Give Hector Noesi credit. After a rocky first inning, when he gave up four runs to the Astros before an out was made, Noesi settled down and battled successfully the rest of the way. He gave up only one more run before leaving after six-plus innings in the 6-5 loss to the Astros…Gordon Beckham singled in a run, Alexei RamirezMoises Sierra and Alejandro De Aza each collected an RBI on a sac fly and Jose Abreu drove in a run on an infield groundout…Adam Dunn doubled and walked twice and Dayan Viciedo had a pair of singles, a walk and scored twice…Sierra made the defensive play of the game in the first inning, a diving catch in right field that prevented another pair of runs from crossing the plate.

Abreu on DL, Eaton Reinstated

Jose Abreu has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with posterior tibia tendonitis in his left ankle. Adam Eaton has been reinstated to the active roster.

Alexei

With Ramirez’s start at short today, his 836th game there with the White Sox, only Hall of Famer Luke Appling (2,218), Ozzie Guillen (1,724) and Luis Aparicio (1,508) have played more games at the position for the Sox.

Blackhawks Continue Their Quest for the Cup

Quotes of the Day

Two examples of the closeness and team-first aspect of this White Sox team. Regarding Eaton’s tweet, many of Abreu’s teammates call him “Oso”–Spanish for bear.

De Aza on Eaton, who is back in his familiar leadoff spot today (via Colleen Kane in the Trib).

“(He brings) a lot of energy. He’s the kind of guy you want to have on your team.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

Gordon Beckham‘s second homer in as many nights–a three run shot–and Paul Konerko‘s bases-clearing three-run double, one of a pair of two-baggers he had on the night, were the key blows as the Sox won their season-high fourth in a row and third straight vs. the Cubs, 8-3. On the slugger’s No. 79 jersey cracking the Top 10 in MLB sales:

“I got one. I got a real one, too, didn’t even have to buy it.”

Did he sign it?

“He will.”

On Jose’s Impact:

“…It’s fun for him, it’s fun for us to have a guy like him. Nobody knew about him last year and now all of a sudden he’s on our team. What makes it fun for us and being around him is that he’s just a good person. He’s a humble kid, he’s a great team person. I think that’s the thing for our guys–you root for him and you’re happy for all these accolades he’s getting and the attention. It’s not going to change him. Guys like to have fun with him because he’s such a good team person and you like to see stuff like this happen to people like him.”

Wearing His Sox Cap with Pride

Bears’ offensive lineman Kyle Long is shown here having fun at Chuck E. Cheese with a young friend who he reached out to after the youngster was a victim of bullying. It’s interesting to note that Long, once drafted by the Sox as a pitcher out of high school, still has an allegiance to our Sox.

Alexei on his 1,000th major-league hit (via interpreter Lino Diaz)

“I’m very, very happy. That’s a good accomplishment. I couldn’t get to 1,000 hits in Cuba, and that was something I wanted to get to. It’s good that I got it here.”

Here’s Ramirez’s milestone hit:
