The Big Dance

Like so many other sports fans around the country, the White Sox will be watching closely as the NCAA tournament unfolds. And you can count on the Sox for their annual bracket frenzy.

While the players and staff all have their favorites, several players in camp are products of the participating schools. And in two cases, teams connected with five

Sox players will be facing each other, sure to prompt some good-natured razzing.

On Thursday in the East Region at Pittsburgh, Jared Mitchell‘s LSU Tigers go up against Rodon’s and Erik Surkamp‘s N.C. State Wolfpack. On Friday it will be Gillaspie’s Wichita State Shockers vs. Micah Johnson‘s Indiana Hoosiers in the Midwest Region at Omaha, Neb. As we know, Rodon had an outstanding college baseball career, good enough to be the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 MLB draft, and Surkamp was drafted in the sixth round. Gillaspie earned All-America honors on the diamond while Johnson was an All-Big Ten selection.

Take a look at all five back in their college days–Gillaspie and Johnson are pictured above and Mitchell, Rodon and Surkamp are shown below.

Here are some other players and staff in camp who will be rooting for their schools.

* Oklahoma State: Manager Robin Ventura

* Georgia: INF Gordon Beckham

* Purdue: INF Dan Black, RHP Scott Carroll

* Ohio State: OF J.B. Shuck

* Arkansas: 1B Andy Wilkins, RHP Nolan Sanburn

Quote of the Day

Adam Eaton, who spent a good amount of time on the disabled list last season, gives some advice to Micah about taking care of his body (via CST_soxvan):

“He’s more explosive than I am on the basepaths. I’m trying to instill in him the lessons I learned last year. Hopefully we can kind of be buddies in the cold tub together and make sure we maintain ourselves and police each other when we’re tired and don’t want to do that.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Mariners at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (3:05 p.m., CT). Probable starters: Samardzija for the Sox, RHP Hishashi Iwakuma for Seattle.

Quote of the Day

Robin on Emilio Bonifacio (via Colleen Kane at the Trib):

Plays of the Day

Ramirez’s blast led off the game and Garcia’s tied the contest at 4-4 in the top of the ninth inning that sent the game into extras.

Eaton Update

In two games with Charlotte on his rehab assignment, Adam Eaton has gone 3-10 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Rodon Watch

The Sox’ No. 1 2014 draft pick Carlos Rodon (pictured below) made his second start for Class AAA Charlotte last night and was quite impressive. The 21-year-old lefty from North Carolina State tossed four innings, allowing just a run, a hit and a pair of walks along with eight strikeouts. He threw 73 pitches, 47 for strikes and fanned five of the last six batters he faced. In his two starts for Charlotte–over seven innings pitched–Rodon has given up two runs, two hits and has struck out 11.

Knights’ outfielder Michael Taylor weighed in on Carlos:

“(Rodon’s) been as advertised, and I think he’s got great stuff. To me, he looks a lot like (San Francisco Giants starter) Madison Bumgarner. I faced him in his first start in Double-A back in 2009, and they look similar – except (Rodon’s) probably got a better slider. That would be one heck of a major league pitcher if that’s who he ends up being.”

Anderson Report

Shortstop Tim Anderson, the White Sox’ top draft choice in 2013, is 7-13 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored in his first three games with Class AA Birmingham.

Quote of the Day

Konerko on being honored by the Yankees:

“The first game I ever went to as a kid was at Yankee Stadium when I was six years old. The fact that I’m getting a gift for something I did on the field in all the time between that and now is mind-boggling.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

Today is an off day, tomorrow it’ll be the White Sox vs. Indians at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN+) in the opener of a three-game series and seven-game homestand that continues with four vs. the Tigers starting on Friday night. Sox Grab N.C. State Lefty Carlos Rodon With Third Pick in Tonight’s Draft

Thursday, June 5, 2014

6_5_1

Today’s News

North Carolina State left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodon is the newest White Sox, selected tonight with the third pick in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft. Rodon, 21, was 25-10 with a 2.24 ERA in three seasons with the Wolfpack. He has a mid-90s fastball and considered by most to have the best slider in the draft.

“(Rodon) was the consensus guy we targeted since his sophomore season,” said Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Doug Laumann. “With his type of fastball and slider he would be a guy on the so-called the fast track, but it’s unfair to say he’ll be on the same track Sale was on (Chris came up to the White Sox just weeks after he was drafted).

“We’re excited because number one, we know how competitive this kid is. The most important thing is we get started on getting him comfortable with the organization.”

With their second-round pick (44th overall), the Sox selected Spencer Adams (pictured below), a right-handed pitcher from White County High School in Georgia. Adams has a 95 mph fastball and struck out 90 in 52 innings this season.

“He’s a real athletic kid,” said Assistant Scouting Director Nick Hostetler. “He’s an exciting player, projectable but also shows now stuff. His makeup is off the charts, we’re happy he got to us. It’s a very, very exciting addition based off adding as many quality arms as we possibly can.”

Another Sox-related draft note: Conor Gillaspie‘s brother Casey was selected by Tampa Bay with the 20th pick in the first round. He’s a switch-hitting first baseman out of Wichita State, which is also where Conor played his college ball.

Plays of the Day

The discussion in the Sox clubhouse after last night’s impressive 2-1 win over the Dodgers centered on this question: What was the game’s highlight, Leury Garcia‘s first career home run or John Danks‘ second career hit? And the lively conversation didn’t even include Adam Dunn’s solo homer, his ninth of the season and 449th of his career, tying him for 36th place with Jeff Bagwell and Vladimir Guerrero on the all-time home run list. Click on this link and watch Dunn go deep. http://m.mlb.com/video/v33443173

Another highlight that should have been in the mix was Danks’ third straight dominant start, as he allowed just one run and two hits over 7.1 innings to win his fourth game of the year. He has given up just three earned runs and 13 hits in his last 22.1 innings with 13 strikeouts and four walks.

Sox Notes of Note

With last night’s victory the White Sox won the series vs. the Dodgers, two games to one. They also moved a game over .500 at 31-30 and now trail the first-place Tigers by just 2.5 games in the American League Central. The second-place Sox have gained 6 1/2 games on Detroit since May 18.

The great Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully taking note of the size difference between White Sox teammates Leury Garcia and Adam Dunn.

“Garcia looks like he fell out of Dunn’s pocket.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

After today’s off-day, it’ll be the White Sox vs. Angels at Angels Stadium, Anaheim (9:05 p.m., CT, CSN) in the opener of a three-game weekend series. Starters: RHP Andre Rienzo (4-2, 4.26) for the Sox, RHP Jered Weaver (6-4, 3.33) for LA.
