The Game

At Scottsdale…

White Sox   3  7  1

Giants         4  9  1

Plays of the Day

Tyler Flowers had two singles and an RBI while Alejandro De Aza and Leury Garcia both singled in runs with Garcia’s being the bunt variety…on the pitching side, Felipe Paulino gave up a pair of runs on five hits in 3.2 IP, but struck out five and Jake Petricka (1.1), Maikel Cleto (1.0), Daniel Webb (1.0) and Zach Putnam (1.0) pitched scoreless ball.

The Cuban Way

Apparently, that’s how they do it in Cuba.

Following an eighth-inning strikeout, catcher Hector Gimenez stepped out to throw to first base (the ball had hit the ground) for the out.

He fired it down to Jose Abreu at first. After recording the out, Abreu fired it right back at Gimenez, who was about 60 feet away and not really expecting it.

As the crowd let out a gasp, the throw sailed past Gimenez and up against the Sox dugout screen.

So apparently, in Cuba, you throw the ball around the infield a little differently after a strikeout.

Sox Notes of Note

Prior to today’s game with San Francisco, the White Sox made the following eight roster moves:

Optioned LHP Charlie Leesman to Class AAA Charlotte and OF Jared Mitchell and OF Trayce

Thompson to Class AA Birmingham; Reassigned C Miguel Gonzalez, RHP Deunte Heath, RHP

Omar Poveda, LHP Scott Snodgress and OF Keenyn Walker to minor-league camp. With the

moves, the White Sox have 47 players remaining in major-league camp: 23 pitchers, four catchers,

14 infielders and six outfielders…the Sox will televise 10 of their final 14 Cactus League games beginning with Friday’s contest vs. the Indians on Comcast SportsNet at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (3:05 p.m., CT).

The Chicken Parmesan: “Solid, If Not Spectacular”

People think that spring training is great, and for the most part they are absolutely right–until about 6 pm each night. That’s when you need to figure out what you are doing with your evening.

I golf, which fills some early evenings, although once games start these opportunities are few and far between.

I don’t really do the bar scene, but like most people I do like to eat. And thanks to my kids and the Food Network, I have garnered quite a reputation for trying places to eat.

“Forget baseball, you should write a food blog,” a certain Executive Vice President said to me recently. (Note: that’s not the first time someone has suggested a different line of work to me, sometimes not as kindly).

So, for fun, and to break the monotony, here’s a review of last night’s dinner with Roger Bossard, the greatest groundskeeper in the world.

After 15 holes of golf at the Wigwam (we never get 18 in due to impending darkness), we headed to a little Italian place at the corner of Litchfield Road and Indian School called Bella Luna.

Nice atmosphere, with as much outside seating as inside, it is your classic New York Italian restaurant.

Roger is in a rut. Every time we go, he orders the lasagna, explaining to me that he married an Italian girl, and “this is good lasagna.”

I opted for the chicken parm last night (a reasonable facsimile of my dinner is pictured below) and it was solid, if not spectacular. The other night’s veal saltimbocca was better (if anyone really cares).

My only warning is that portions aren’t huge, so you might need a quick stop at Jack In The Box on the way home.

It is worth noting that ANY dinner tastes better when someone else is buying. Unfortunately (for me), Roger was only buying because he kicked my butt on the golf course (at least on the Par 3s)!

Roger heads home at the end of this week so this was a going-away dinner of sorts. He acknowledges that he is going to be challenged in getting the U.S. Cellular Field infield thawed out by Opening Day, but knowing Roger, my money is with the world’s greatest groundskeeper (and a pretty good golfer as well).

Apologies to my friends and family who are suffering through another winter storm in Chicago (this is actually my street back home)–while I’m basking here in the beautiful Arizona sunshine at spring training. Don’t hate me!

Starting this season, managers can challenge as many as two calls in the first six innings. After the sixth inning, umpires will determine which plays should be reviewed.

Shooty

I met Shooty Babitt today. It’s not every day you meet Shooty Babitt.

I’m guessing that for anyone who grew up playing APBA or Stratomatic, there are certain guys you’ll never forget, sometimes for the peculiarities of their particular cards in a given year. Babitt, now an A’s broadcaster, played for Oakland in 1981.

Shooty (pictured below, top) was one for me. Lerrin LaGrow in 1977 (below, bottom) was another.

The crazy things that stick with you.

Adam Meets Prince

Adam Eaton chopped a ball down the first base line in the second inning today only to meet an immovable force, Prince Fielder.

Drawing a collective chuckle from the crowd, Fielder had scooped up the ball and came down the line toward Eaton.

As Eaton approached Fielder, both players smiled and Fielder tagged/hugged Eaton for the third out of the inning.

Today’s News

The Calm Before the Storm

With tomorrow’s Cactus League opener looming and a full schedule of games to follow, the Sox had a short day today. There was a brief meeting in the morning, a batting practice session that took about an hour and then the troops were free to go.

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Dodgers at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (2:05 p.m., Chicago time) in the first game of spring training. Scheduled pitchers for the Sox are Chris Sale, Eric Surkamp, Donnie Veal, Jake Petricka, Matt Lindstrom and a host of others. Here’s the lineup card:

Quote of the Day

It’s official. Adam Dunn will attend the Academy Awards on Sunday night. He was not only an investor in the Best Picture-nominated Dallas Buyers Club, but had a cameo as a bartender as well. His thoughts?

“I know people have parties for this kind of thing so it must be pretty cool.”

Sox Note of Note

More Dunn: Robin, tongue in cheek, said that a condition of Adam going to the Oscars is that he goes on stage if his movie wins for Best Picture…the White Sox have traded infielder Jake Elmore to the Oakland A’s in exchange for cash considerations. Elmore, 26, was designated for assignment on Wednesday after being claimed off waivers from Houston on November 13, 2013.

Did You Know …

Friday and Saturday Pitching Schedule

The Sox open their Cactus League season on Friday at Camelback Ranch-Glendale against the Dodgers and host the Indians on Saturday. Here’s how the pitching will be set up.

Friday: Chris Sale, Eric Surkamp, Donnie Veal, Jake Petricka, Matt Lindstrom and a host of others.

Saturday: John Danks, Chris Beck, Omar Poveda, Scott Downs and others.

Brought Back by Popular Demand

Those 1983 “Winning Ugly” uniforms that were such a big hit with the Sox players and fans last year will be worn this season as alternate uniforms with a new “batterman” cap. They won’t be worn only on Sundays at home as they were for the most part in 2013, but rather anytime the players decide they want to wear them. See Photos of the Day.

Quote of the Day

Matt Davidson on the Sox wearing the ’83 throwback unis: “Awesome.”

Sox Note of Note

The Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Maikel Cleto (Michael CLAY-toh) off waivers from the Kansas City Royals and have designated infielder Jake Elmore for assignment. Cleto, 24, split time last season between Class AAA Memphis in the Cardinals organization and Class AAA Omaha in the Royals system.
