Today’s News

Tonight’s Game

White Sox vs Orioles, Oriole Park at Camden Yards (6:05 p.m., CT, WCIU). Starters: LHP Jose Quintana (3-7, 3.87) for the Sox, Miguel Gonzalez (4-4, 4.41) for Baltimore.

Sox Starting Lineup: Eaton CF, Beckham 2B, Gillaspie 3B, Abreu 1B, Dunn DH, Ramirez SS, Viciedo RF, De Aza LF, Flowers C.

Plays of the Day

Jose Abreu smashed a solo homer, his 22nd, doubled in a run and drove in another last night–giving him 60 RBI on the season–in the Sox’ walk-off loss in Baltimore…Chris Sale, who left with the lead, gave up two runs in six innings.

More Abreu

Jose owns an eight-game hitting streak, batting .364 with three homers and nine RBI during that span. He also has nine games with three or more RBI, tying him with Oakland’s Brandon Moss and Toronto’s Edwin Encarnacion for the most in the big leagues. His 39 extra-base hits is the most by a major leaguer through his first 63 games since the Reds’ Chris Sabo‘s 39 in 1988 (compliments of @ckamka). Abreu’s 22 homers are the most by a rookie before the All-Star break since Mark McGwire hit 33 for the A’s in 1987.

Jose, Alexei Maintain Standing in AL All-Star Voting

Abreu and Alexei Ramirez continue to rank second at their respective positions in the American League All-Star voting. Jose is behind the Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera at first base and Alexei is No. 2 behind the Yankees’ Derek Jeter at shortstop.

White Sox Prospects are “Future Stars”

Second baseman Micah Johnson will represent the United States and RHP Francellis Montas will be part of the World team in the All-Star Futures Game on July 13 at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Johnson, 25, is hitting a combined .308 with four home runs, 23 RBI, 30 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 61 games with Class AA Birmingham and Class AAA Charlotte. He is hitting .462 over his last six games.

Montas, only 21, is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 51 strikeouts in nine starts with Class A Winston-Salem and has limited opponents to a .193 opponents average. He was one of four players acquired from Boston last season in the Jake Peavy trade.

Vandy One Game Away

With their victory in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series over Virginia, former White Sox Amateur City Elite (ACE) standout Ro Coleman and his Vanderbilt teammates are a game away from their first College World Series title. Game 2 is tonight at 7:00 p.m., CT, in Omaha and televised on ESPN.

Here’s Coleman’s remarkable story, written by whitesox.com‘s Scott Merkin in 2012:

Quote of the Day

Abreu talks about the Sox losing streak. The conclusion? It’s baseball.

“Bad times are part of (baseball) and I think what we have to do is we have to play together. We have to get united. Tough times are going to be there. That’s part of the game, it’s part of the spectacle, it’s part of everything you do in baseball. To be able to get out of it, you have to pull it together.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Orioles, Oriole Park at Camden Yards (6:05 p.m., CT, CSN) in the finale of the three-game series. Starters: RHP Hector Noesi (2-5, 5.34) for the Sox, RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (2-8, 4.63) for the O’s.

On the Bright Side

White Sox starters rank 4th in the American League with a 3.87 ERA. Their ERA has improved during the current losing streak.

Robin and the “Ryan Express”

Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the brawl between Robin Ventura and the Rangers’ Nolan Ryan on the mound in Texas.  In addition to making me – once again – feel old, I chuckled about my perspective on that moment.  I was traveling with the team on that trip and for some reason, I can’t quite remember why, I was asked to deliver an autographed Frank Thomas baseball to a young boy in the stands just over our dugout.  So I waited until a good time in the game to head down to deliver the gift.  The elevator at that old ballpark might have been the slowest ever – to go only one floor – and I recall walking down the stands looking for the right row and seat number.  All of a sudden, the crowd roared, I looked up just in time to see Robin reach Ryan.  The rest is photographic history.  I dropped off the ball, said a quick hello and dashed back upstairs to the press box to catch footage of the pitch and its result.

Last Opening Day in Texas, Ryan stopped by our clubhouse to shake hands with Robin.  My recollection of that meeting was that Nolan Ryan remains a big human being.  Big.

Play(s) of the Day

Despite getting his second straight no-decision in yesterday’s 3-2, extra-inning loss, Andre Rienzo was impressive in his second big-league start No. 2. He went six innings, giving up only two runs on four hits…With yesterday’s mammoth 475-foot solo homer, Adam Dunn passed Cal Ripken Jr. for 43rd place on the all-time home run list with his 432nd.  It was Adam’s 26th of the season and he added three singles for good measure. Furthermore, he is hitting .308 with 13 home runs and 36 RBI over the last 48 games and has raised his average from .156 to .226…Paul Konerko homered to tie the game at 2-2 in the ninth…And how about this catch by Gordon Beckham?

Quote of the Day

Outfielder Avisail Garcia on being traded to the Sox:

“I’m happy for the trade. This is a new opportunity for me to be here. I thank God for that. I’ve just got to keep playing hard and try to do something good for my team and help my team win games.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, WGN). Starters: LHP Chris Sale (6-11, 2.92) for the Sox, RHP Hiroki  Kuroda (10-6, 2.38) for New York.

Did You Know…

…that Paulie’s homer was the 430th of his career, 45th against the Tigers, the 18th at Comerica Park and eighth of the season?
