The White Sox and the Civil Rights Game
David Haugh has written a terrific piece that appears in today’s Trib. It is centered on Sox Executive Vice President Ken Williams and our club’s close connection with the annual Civil Rights Game, which will be played at U.S. Cellular Field on Saturday vs. Texas.
Sox icon Minnie Minoso will take part in the festivities surrounding the Civil Rights Game. Scott Merkin, via whitesox.com, writes about Minoso’s impact.
More on Minnie…
Minoso’s accomplishments seem to have been ignored in the publicity surrounding Ichiro’s 4,000th professional hit. Not so fast, says Scott Simkus on sabr.com.

Play(s) of the Day
We won our third straight series last night with the 5-2 triumph over the Royals, following series wins over the Tigers and Twins–all, of course, A.L. Central foes…Andre Rienzo became the first Brazilian-born pitcher to win a major league game and Dayan Viciedo backed him with a 3-for-4 night highlighted by a fourth-inning grand slam…Conor Gillaspie also had a three-hit night and scored a run…Avi Garcia extended his hitting streak to eight games by beating out a routine grounder to shortstop–another example of his exceptional speed. He’s batting .394 during his career-high streak.
Quote(s) of the Day
Robin talks about last night’s heroes:
On Rienzo: “Just a good, gutsy job by him. Any time a guy gets his first win it’s special.”
On Viciedo: “Tank swung it great. I don’t know if we have seen him swing it like this. It’s nice to see. He’s probably making some changes and it works.”
White Sox vs. Rangers at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, WCIU) in the opener of a three-game series. Starters: LHP Chris Sale (9-11, 2.78) for the Sox, LHP Martin Perez (6-3, 3.48) for Texas.
Did You Know…
…that Addison Reed’s 33 saves are the most for a White Sox pitcher under the age of 25 and last night also became the first Sox pitcher to record a save in five consecutive team games? He’s the first major leaguer to save five straight team games since Francisco Rodriguez did it for the Angels in June/July of 2008.
Leury Garcia Joins Sox
Infielder Leury Garcia, acquired from Texas in the Alex Rios trade, has been recalled from Class AAA Charlotte. He replaces Blake Tekotte (who was optioned yesterday to Charlotte) on the active roster. Garcia has combined to hit .265 with four triples, four home runs, 20 RBI, 15 stolen bases and 34 runs scored in 55 games this season between Charlotte and Class AAA Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League. He has made 47 appearances at shortstop, six in center field and two at second base. His first name is pronounced Lay-OOH-ree.

Last night’s win gave the Sox a season-high five-game winning streak. Here’s what you might call a “victory party” after a win earlier in the streak:
