Quote of the Day

Josh Stowers (pictured below), who is a junior at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, was the MVP of Wednesday’s Double Duty Classic at U.S. Cellular Field, which brings together elite inner-city players from all over the country to celebrate the history of the Negro Leagues. Stowers, who is committed to play at Louisville, articulated a genuine understanding of that history:

“I can’t really imagine what they went through, because I don’t really experience it nowadays. I go to an integrated school and there’s no racism at all, but it just shows when they experienced racism, they really had to turn the other cheek. They couldn’t say anything back, and even if they didn’t really do anything, they would still get punished.”

Quote of the Day

We all know that Chris Sale is one of the premier pitchers in MLB. It’s also nice to know he’s humble and a team player as he addresses the comparisons he gets to Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw (via Scott Merkin, whitesox.com):

“It’s stuff for my parents, my grandmother, my friends to talk about. Being in here, you know some of these guys pretty well being around for a while, and this would not be a good locker room for someone to be arrogant or self-promoting if you will.
“There’s a lot of guys in here that keep you humble and make sure your head is screwed on straight. We talk to each other especially about pitching and baseball, but I wouldn’t say that I’m by any means calling the shots or steering the car.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Twins at Target Field (1:10 p.m., CT, CSN) in the finale of the four-game series. Starters: LHP Danks (6-5, 3.97) for the Sox, RHP Phil Hughes (7-3, 3.09) for Minnesota.

The Sox and Giants: A Rare Glimpse of History

Thanks to Jim Margalus of the popular website South Side Sox, here’s a fascinating sidebar to his previous series about a time a century ago when the White Sox and Giants were partners on a baseball diplomacy tour.

Quote of the Day

Robin on Danks’ performance:

“He has really gotten it together, from where he started early in the year, the frustrations he had, some mechanical stuff that you start with and then it becomes mental and all the physical stuff that comes with it.  He has pitched to where he’s always giving us a chance right now. He becomes tough when he has the feel of the changeup like that and spotting his fastball. It just seems like he has a little more on it as far as spotting his fastball.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Twins at Target Field, Minneapolis (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN) in the opener of a four-game series and an 11-game road trip that continues in Baltimore and Toronto. Starters: LHP Jose Quintana (3-7, 3.98) for the Sox vs. Yohan Pino, making his first major-league start, for Minnesota.

It was also his third career outing with at least 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Looking into the Future

I was at our Camelback Ranch facility in Glendale today and had the opportunity to see U.S. Olympic speed skater Eddy Alvarez (in top photo below), who signed with us earlier this week, take batting practice. Also there was Micker Adolfo Zapata (bottom photo), the Dominican outfielder who signed with the Sox a year ago when he was 16. Upon signing, Micker was the No. 2 ranked international prospect by MLB.com.

Abreu Loses Boot and Resumes Baseball Activity

No longer in a walking boot, Jose Abreu took 25-30 ground balls, threw for 10 minutes and hit off a tee in the indoor batting cages before yesterday’s game and worked out again today. Barring any setbacks he should be back in the lineup the first day he’s eligible to come off of the DL–Monday, June 2 when the Sox will be in Los Angeles playing the Dodgers.

More Abreu: Jose is third among first baseman, behind only Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols, in the first AL All-Star voting results.

All-Star Alexei?

Speaking of All-Star voting, Ramirez is a strong second behind Derek Jeter among AL shortstops. It’s no wonder he’s getting that kind of support. He ranks at the top of the league in the following key offensive categories: average (.320), homers (7), RBIs (36), slugging percentage (.483), OPS (.838) and hits (65).

Sox Notes of Note

The White Sox have won seven of their last 12 games and now lead the season series against the Indians, five games to three…Sox starters own a 2.86 ERA with 41 strikeouts and a .200 average over the last seven games…Quintana has never lost to Cleveland (3-0 in nine appearances, seven starts). He has a 2.68 ERA against the Tribe…Gillaspie set a career high yesterday with his four hits. His previous high was three. He’s hitting .529 against Cleveland this season and .350 overall…Ramirez is hitting .376 with three doubles, two triples, five home runs and 22 RBI at home this season.

Catch of the Day

It has to be this grab by Eileen Depesa as Tyler Flowers‘ bat flew into the stands during yesterday’s game. Take a look and give her a save for keeping it away from the baby in the row behind her.

Bears in the House

The Bears will take center stage the next two nights for the ceremonial first pitch. Charles “Peanut” Tillman will do the honors tonight and Kyle Long tomorrow night.

Quote of the Day

Lino Diaz, the White Sox’ director of cultural development and interpreter, on Abreu’s workout yesterday:

“He got all the work he needed to do and felt no pain at all. He’s feeling really good.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Indians at U.S. Cellular Field (7:05 p.m., CT, CSN) in the finale of the three-game series. Starters: RHP Hector Noesi (0-4, 6.82) for the Sox, RHP T.J. House (0-1, 6.43) for the Tribe.

Robin Ventura talks about Tyler Flowers improvement this season. The Sox catcher is batting .312 with an on-base percentage of .371.

“Flow has been a big part of us being where we’re at. He’s taking the ball the other way, he’s balanced, strikeouts are down. He’s hit a couple of big homers for us. He’s had a nice little stretch here while playing a very demanding position. He’s in a nice spot.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Indians at U.S. Cellular Field (1:10 p.m., CT, CSN) in a Memorial Day matinee. Starters: LHP Jose Quintana (2-4, 3.67) for the Sox, RHP Josh Tomlin (3-2, 2.91) for the Tribe.

Toni Ginnetti

Heartfelt congratulations to long-time baseball writer/reporter Toni Ginnetti of the Sun-Times (pictured above) who announced her official retirement this week after covering her first White Sox game when Jim Fregosi was manager. Toni, as classy and professional a reporter as you will find, will continue to fill in from time to time, particularly on weekends. She was at the ballpark celebrating her retirement by working on Sunday and was feted by the Sox media relations staff with a scoreboard message and a special cake delivered to the press box.

The Great Hawk Harrelson

“Good morning, everyone,” the familiar voice boomed through the elevator as the door closed. Hawk Harrelson had hopped on just as the doors slid shut, joining me and a multi-generational family of Sox fans, running the gamut from a walker to baby strollers.

Hawk said his hellos to all the kids and as the family got out at the 100 level of US Cellular Field, the patriarch asked if Hawk would pose for a group shot. “Of course!’ With that, Hawk jumped out into the entry way and posed for a couple of iPhone photos and signed an autograph. Meanwhile, the elevator operator held the door. When Hawk got back on, I told him just how lucky I am to ride the elevator with the great Hawk Harrelson. He let out a big laugh and grabbed me around the neck in a good-natured vice grip.

Quote of the Day

Sox bench coach Mark Parent, who was the interim manager Saturday in Robin Ventura‘s absence, spoke to the media about the status of Adam Eaton, who has been on the DL since May 3:

“He’s going to go out to Oakland with us for a couple days, and then he’s going to head off to (Class AAA) Charlotte and then probably join us the last day in Houston (Sunday, May 18). Really excited to see him back. He adds a lot to our lineup, defensively and offensively and running the bases. Just overall energy in the game. He’s obviously had a really good year so we want to continue his progress.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. A’s at O.co Coliseum (9:05 p.m., CT, CSN). Starters: RHP Scott Carroll (1-2, 3.63) for the Sox, LHP Drew Pomeranz (2-1, 1.45) for the A’s.

Photo/Video of the Day

Before Sunday’s game, several White Sox wives and one Sox mom–third base coach Joe McEwing’s mother (see photo below)–all threw out ceremonial first pitches to their spouses and son (click link below) The one exception was Dayan Viciedo‘s son (see photo below) decked out in a Sox uniform. He fired any baseball he could find to his laughing father.  Maybe he’ll be a pitcher when he grows up!  I wonder if Mrs. McEwing drinks Red Bull before each of her games?

White Sox vs. Rays at U.S. Cellular Field (1:10 p.m., CT, CSN). Starters: RHP Scott Carroll (pictured above), making his first major league start, for the Sox and LHP David Price (3-1, 4.04) for Tampa Bay. Carroll is 3-1 with a 1.57 ERA in four starts this season with Class AAA Charlotte. He was a third-round selection of the Reds in 2007 and joined the Sox organization in 2012.

Carroll is a Missouri native who attended Missouri State, where he also played quarterback. Here, in this first person piece, Scott talks about his long road to the major leagues and, specifically, his Tommy John surgery.
