The Most Talented Pierce Since Billy?

For more than a half-century Billy Pierce has been synonymous with the White Sox, having distinguished himself as the All-Star ace of the Go-Go Sox pitching staff of the 1950s. Yesterday at the Little League World Series another Pierce made Chicago proud in a performance that Hall of Famer and broadcaster Barry Larkin called “the stuff of legends.”

Jackie Robinson West’s Pierce Jones (No. 23 shown above being mobbed by teammates after smashing a homer) went 4-4 with three home runs–the first leading off the game–a triple and four RBI in JRW’s 12-2 victory over Lynnwood of Washington state in the South Side team’s first contest in the double elimination tournament. The game was stopped after five innings because of JRW’s 10-run lead.

Shortstop Ed Howard added a two-run homer and pitcher Joshua Houston went four innings, striking out seven and giving up only two hits for the winners.

Howard and Houston are both members of the White Sox Amateur City Elite (ACE) program along with Cameron Bufford, Brandon Green, Marquis Jackson and Carlton “Trey” Hondras

By the way, Trey has one of the most intriguing pre-game rituals you’ve ever heard. He says he talks to girls for good luck.

JRW continues its quest of a LLWS title on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Back Home…

While the JRW youngsters were impressing the fans in South Williamsport, Pa. yesterday,  there were hundreds of fans at Jackie Robinson Park where a viewing party was organized by the White Sox, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the City of Chicago. The crowd, which included many sporting Sox jerseys, caps and t-shirts, enthusiastically supported their hometown team as they watched the large TV screen. Those attending enjoyed ballpark food and other various activities, including face painting. Former Sox stars Minnie Minoso and Carlos May were there signing autographs and Southpaw was on hand bringing smiles to everyone’s faces.

Here was the scene yesterday at JR Park.
