A’s               2  9  2

Plays of the Day

The Sox tied the score at 2-2 with a run in the eighth inning. 2B Micah Johnson (see Photo of the Day) singled, moved to second on a balk, went to third on a groundout and scored on an error…RHP Erik Johnson made the start and went 4.0 IP, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out five…RHP Daniel Webb, making his first Cactus League appearance after being away from camp due to a death in the famiily, pitched a scoreless inning as did RHP Jake Petricka and RHP Cody Winiarski.

Jose OK

LHP Jose Quintana, who left in the first inning of yesterday’s game after being hit by a comebacker to the mound, is feeling better and expects to make his next start on Thursday.

Instant Replay

The Sox will have instant replay available during nine Cactus League games this spring–the first scheduled for tomorrow against the Brewers in Maryvale. Other dates are March 14 vs. the Indians, March 15 vs. the Dodgers, March 18 vs. the A’s,  March 19 vs. Angels, March 22 vs. the Giants, March 23 at the Rockies in Scottsdale, March 26 vs. the Reds and March 27 vs. the Cubs. Starting this season, managers can challenge as many as two calls in the first six innings. After the sixth inning, umpires will determine which plays should be reviewed.

Shooty

I met Shooty Babitt today. It’s not every day you meet Shooty Babitt.

I’m guessing that for anyone who grew up playing APBA or Stratomatic, there are certain guys you’ll never forget, sometimes for the peculiarities of their particular cards in a given year. Babitt, now an A’s broadcaster, played for Oakland in 1981.

Shooty (pictured below, top) was one for me. Lerrin LaGrow in 1977 (below, bottom) was another.

The crazy things that stick with you.

Quote of the Day

From Paul Sullivan’s piece on Jose Abreu in today’s Trib:

Abreu has blended in well in the Sox clubhouse, where fellow Cuban defectors Dayan Viciedo and Alexei Ramirez have helped ease the transition to the major league lifestyle.

“Their help and support has been incredible, and I’m very thankful to them for that,” Abreu said. “And (Adam) Dunn and Konerko as well. They all make me feel comfortable … talking to me and making me feel part of it.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Brewers at Maryvale (3:05 p.m., CT). Sox pitching schedule: LHP Chris Sale, LHP David Purcey, LHP Eric Surkamp, RHP Maikel Cleto, RHP Zach Putnam, RHP Nestor Molina, RHP Frank De Los Santos. Milwaukee starter: Yovani Gallardo.

It Seems You Can’t Have One Without the Other

The Southern League champion Birmingham Barons have named long-time friends and teammates Erik Johnson and Marcus Semien the 2013 Barons Players of the Year. Johnson and Semien played together in college at Cal-Berkeley and on the pro level this year alone at Charlotte and now the White Sox in addition to Birmingham.

Tommy John in the House

Former standout Sox pitcher Tommy John and his family threw out the ceremonial first pitch on Wednesday at U.S. Cellular Field.

Many young baseball fans know the name Tommy John only from the surgery of the same name. What they may not remember is that John was an outstanding pitcher in the major leagues for 26 seasons. Overall, he won 288 games with a 3.34 ERA and in seven seasons with the Sox (1965-71) he registered 82 wins with a 2.95 ERA. Here’s Tommy both during his time with the Sox and on Wednesday with his family.

Quote of the Day

Sox prospect Micah Johnson spoke to whitesox.com‘s Scott Merkin on Wednesday during his visit to U.S. Cellular. Micah, who was named the MVP of the Southern League Championship Series, talked about being part of a title-winning team for the first time:

“That’s the first championship I’ve ever won. That was unbelievable. I didn’t know what to do. You know how the middle infielders go to second base after a regular win? I kind of did that. I didn’t know to go to the dog pile.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Tigers at Comerica Park (6:05 p.m., CT, CSN). Starters: LHP Chris Sale (11-13, 3.08) for the Sox, RHP Rick Porcello (13-8, 4.45) for Detroit.

Baines and Santiago Meet the Troops

Take a look at Harold Baines and Hector Santiago as they visit with members of the military a week ago on 9/11. Both were personally affected on that fateful day in 2001. Baines was in New York with the Sox, who were in town to play the Yankees, and Santiago could actually see the devastation first-hand from his Newark, New Jersey middle school.

Quote of the Day

Paulie, on what he hears from Sox opponents about Quintana (via Colleen Kane in the Trib):

Quote(s) of the Day

I posted yesterday that rookies Semien and RHP Erik Johnson were among the players named to Baseball America‘s 2013 Minor League All-Star first team and were teammates on the University of California-Berkeley squad that made it to the 2011 College World Series.

Colleen Kane points out in today’s Trib that they were also roommates at Cal and played summer ball together in the Northwoods League in Minnesota as well as being drafted the same year (2011) and called up to the majors on the same day (September 3).

“We’ve been together through everything, actually,” Semien told Kane.“It’s pretty cool. If you have any questions, you can always go to him and ask because we’ve kind of gone through the same things. You don’t feel like you’re alone through this.”

Johnson added:  “It makes me comfortable when he’s out there playing behind me.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

Play(s) of the Day

It was a special night for the newly acquired Garcias–Avisail and Leury–on Wednesday night as the Sox defeated the Astros, 6-1. Avi went 3-4, highlighted by a three-run blast  (his first homer with the Sox), and is now hitting .397 in his last 15 games and .352 in 19 games since coming to Chicago. Leury, spelling Alexei Ramirez at shortstop, walked twice, scored twice, stole a base and drove in a run with a sac fly…It was also a vintage Chris Sale as he went eight-plus innings, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out 12. He claimed his 10th victory of the year, collected his 20th quality start, tied the franchise record with at least 12 strikeouts in a game for the sixth time in his career (along with Juan Pizarro and Ed Walsh) and set a Sox record for accomplishing it for the fourth time in 2013. Avi and Leury in action:

Quote of the Day

Adam Dunn gives credit to hitting coach Jeff Manto for his recent success at the plate (courtesy of Manny Randhawa, mlb.com):

“I don’t think I’ve changed my approach very much. I  just think I’m getting pitched a little bit differently than I have. I’m able to get to some balls that for most of my career I wasn’t able to get to and I think that’s credit to Jeff, getting me all year long in a good hitting position. I think it’s just having a really good routine and having a really good hitting coach that won’t let me get away from what we’re trying to do. Sometimes it’s frustrating and sometimes I’ll yell at him and he’s really quick to yell right back and say, ‘We’re doing it.’ So, it’s good.”

 Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Red Sox at Fenway Park (6:10 p.m., CT, WGN). Starters: LHP John Danks (4-10, 4.15) for the Sox, former teammate RHP Jake Peavy (10-5, 3.99) for Boston.

 Did You Know…

…that Jeff Keppinger is hitting .378 with two homers, five RBI and 10 runs scored over his last 15 games?
