The Big Dance

Like so many other sports fans around the country, the White Sox will be watching closely as the NCAA tournament unfolds. And you can count on the Sox for their annual bracket frenzy.

While the players and staff all have their favorites, several players in camp are products of the participating schools. And in two cases, teams connected with five

Sox players will be facing each other, sure to prompt some good-natured razzing.

On Thursday in the East Region at Pittsburgh, Jared Mitchell‘s LSU Tigers go up against Rodon’s and Erik Surkamp‘s N.C. State Wolfpack. On Friday it will be Gillaspie’s Wichita State Shockers vs. Micah Johnson‘s Indiana Hoosiers in the Midwest Region at Omaha, Neb. As we know, Rodon had an outstanding college baseball career, good enough to be the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 MLB draft, and Surkamp was drafted in the sixth round. Gillaspie earned All-America honors on the diamond while Johnson was an All-Big Ten selection.

Take a look at all five back in their college days–Gillaspie and Johnson are pictured above and Mitchell, Rodon and Surkamp are shown below.

Here are some other players and staff in camp who will be rooting for their schools.

* Oklahoma State: Manager Robin Ventura

* Georgia: INF Gordon Beckham

* Purdue: INF Dan Black, RHP Scott Carroll

* Ohio State: OF J.B. Shuck

* Arkansas: 1B Andy Wilkins, RHP Nolan Sanburn

Adam Eaton, who spent a good amount of time on the disabled list last season, gives some advice to Micah about taking care of his body (via CST_soxvan):

“He’s more explosive than I am on the basepaths. I’m trying to instill in him the lessons I learned last year. Hopefully we can kind of be buddies in the cold tub together and make sure we maintain ourselves and police each other when we’re tired and don’t want to do that.”

Yesterday’s Highlights

Just hours before yesterday’s game vs. the Angels in Tempe, we posted a picture on the blog showing Adam LaRoche working out in the White Sox weight room. In the fourth inning, Adam launched a grand slam (click on link below), his first homer of the spring, and added another RBI with a sac fly as the Sox went on to win, 7-6, on a 14-hit attack…LaRoche wasn’t the only standout against the Halos. Leadoff man Micah Johnson went 3-4 with three singles, drove in a run and scored twice. He’s now hitting .455 in Cactus League play…Melky Cabrera also knocked out three singles in three at bats and is now hitting .316…Tyler Saladino went 2-4 with a run scored and Courtney Hawkins doubled in a run. Hawkins continues to impress. He’s batting at a .450 clip…Starter Brad Penny got credit for the win. He went 3.2 IP, allowing a lone run…Matt Albers earned the save with a scoreless ninth that featured a pair of strikeouts. He now has a five-inning scoreless streak.

Today’s News

Crowd Pleaser

The Will Ferrell show came to Camelback Ranch-Glendale last night in dramatic fashion with the crowd enjoying the theatrics and enthusiastically cheering on the popular actor-comedian.

Today’s News

Stay Classy, White Sox Fans

Actor/comedian Will Ferrell will DH for the Sox today in the team’s 6:05 p.m., CT game against the San Francisco Giants at Camelback Ranch-Glendale.  Ferrell is participating in a once-in-a-lifetime role for the lifelong baseball fan, as production begins on a new special from Funny Or Die, in partnership with Major League Baseball, to air exclusively on HBO later this year.

Dedicating today’s project to the fight against cancer, Ferrell also is honoring the historic feat by Oakland’s Bert Campaneris five decades ago by playing every position on the field and maybe some off the field for 10 different teams in the same day.

Ferrell’s goal is to honor Campaneris while also helping organizations dedicated to fighting cancer, including Cancer for College.  Formed in 1993, Cancer for College is a charity that helps individuals adversely affected by cancer realize their dream of a college education.

An important part of the fund-raising efforts will be game-used memorabilia from Ferrell’s journey across the five ballparks that will be auctioned online later in the year on MLB.com with proceeds being donated to Cancer for College as well as Stand Up To Cancer, a groundbreaking initiative created to accelerate innovative cancer research.  MLB is the founding donor of Stand Up To Cancer.

Ferrell’s historic day will be chronicled in the exclusive HBO special which will air later this year and also feature major-league players, managers, coaches, executives and fans.  Fans can follow along live and on-demand throughout the day across MLB Network, MLB.comwhitesox.com and all the official social media accounts of MLB and the White Sox.

This Afternoon’s Games

White Sox (Split Squad) vs. Rangers at Surprise (3:05 p.m., CT). Probable Sox starter: RHP Frankie Montas. Others scheduled are RHP Chris Beck and RHP J.D. Martin.

Yesterday’s Highlights

The White Sox overcame a 3-0 first inning deficit and fought back to tie the Rangers 4-4 in a game called after nine innings, the club’s second come-from-behind tie in the last three days…Conor Gillaspie (in photo below) knotted up the game at 3-3 in the sixth with a double and Andy LaRoche knocked out his own two-base hit in the eighth to tie the contest at 4-4…Geovany Soto went 2-4 with an RBI…Logan Kensing (0.2 IP), Daniel Webb (1.0), Zach Duke (1.0), Javy Guerra (1.0), Dan Jennings (1.0) and Jake Petricka (1.0) each pitched scoreless ball…The Sox are now 3-3-2.

“Adam Eaton Will Forever Be a Hero in His Eyes”

Today’s News

An E-mail From a Sox Fan Titled “Biggest Little Sox Fan!”

Good morning,

I am a Chicago native that was born and raised a die-hard White Sox fan, but I now live in the Phoenix, AZ area. I have a 4 year old son, Colton (pictured above) who is also a huge Sox fan. We had the opportunity to attend opening day at Camelback Ranch on March 4th. My son started noticing the ballparks getting ready for spring training a few weeks ago and has been asking non-stop when baseball is starting. He is such a HUGE Sox fan, he even has a White Sox bedroom. That being said, I can’t say enough about how amazing your players are when it comes to interacting with your fans.

We arrived at the stadium 90 minutes early so we had time to grab some hot dogs and get to our seats in time for autographs. My son received autographs from Penny, Eaton, Ramirez and more. This made him so happy, he was even telling me that he’s lucky. And then his day got even better. In the middle of the 4th inning Adam Eaton was on his way off the field. While passing by he tossed a handful of bubble gum to the fans. He then stopped in front of my son and handed him the bat he used to play the game, saying it was for the little fan. At the moment my son was sort of stunned and speechless, but once Adam walked away and he realized what had happened he was so excited. All he’s talked about for the past 2 days is his White Sox bat. I had to explain to him why he can’t take it to school and I’m pretty sure he would sleep with it if I let him. I don’t know if this is something that happens often during games, but it meant more to my son than words could ever explain. Adam Eaton will forever be a hero in his eyes.

He loves baseball so much and being able to interact with players really made a lasting impression on him. We make 2-3 trips to Chicago during the summer and going to game day with his Grandpa is always the highlight of the trip. He was sad to leave after the spring training game and was already asking when we can go to the park with the shower (fan shower in the outfield concourse at U.S. Cellular Field). He is truly your biggest little fan.

I’ve attached a picture of my son with his new, most prized possession at opening day. Please pass along our immense gratitude to Adam Eaton if at all possible. We will be attending several more games during spring training (I would take the whole month of March off if I could) and look forward to cheering on the White Sox.

“Our goal is not to jump up and contend for one year and then the next couple scrambling to put us back in position and jump up again. Our goal is to contend on an annual basis. Part of that is the introduction and development of young talent on an annual basis.”

Who knows if Adam LaRoche‘s son Drake will be the third generation LaRoche to reach the big leagues, following in the footsteps of his grandad Dave, a 14-year major-league pitcher, dad Adam and uncle Andy, who is also in Sox camp this spring. But if Drake does reach the bigs, he very well may look back at this conversation with Jim Thome at Sox camp as being one of the reasons why he made it.
