Quote of the Day
Robin on his hands-off approach to advising the recent September call-ups:

“This is what they’re dreaming to do, so once they get to this point, you just let them play. I don’t want them having that (special advice) in the back of their mind when they’re trying to go out there and play, so you just let them play and let their ability take over.”

Quote(s) of the Day
Conor Gillaspie, who visited Walter Reed Military Hospital yesterday with a group of his teammates (via Colleen Kane in today’s Tribune):
“If I get super frustrated about (baseball), I will go back and remember what those guys have been through. There are some really good guys, and how happy they are, how much they appreciated 10 minutes of our time — it makes you forget about all this (losing).”
Robin on versatile rookie Leury Garcia, who started at shortstop last night and will be in centerfield today:
“Just want to give him enough opportunity and let him move around.”

Play(s) of the Day

Today’s News

Tonight’s Game

White Sox vs. Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore (6:05 p.m., CT, CSN) in the opener of a four-game series. Starters: LHP Jose Quintana (7-5, 3.69) for the Sox, RHP Miguel Gonzalez (8-7, 4.11) for the O’s.

Sox Starting Lineup: De Aza, CF; Beckham, 2B; Ramirez, SS; Dunn, DH, Konerko,1B; A. Garcia, RF; Gillaspie, 3B; Viciedo, LF; Anderson, C.

Play(s) of the Day

It was a loss in the standings, but a big step forward as we look ahead to better times in 2014. In last night’s series finale the Sox dropped a close 6-5 decision to the Yankees, but it was a satisfying showcase for a talented group of youngsters: 3B Marcus Semien, RHP Erik Johnson, RHP Daniel Webb–all making their major league debuts–OF Avi Garcia and C Josh Phegley.

Semien went 2-4, including a hit in his first big-league at bat, and drove in a run. Johnson, against the formidable Yankee lineup, recorded a quality start as he gave up three earned runs in six innings of work while Webb pitched the seventh, giving up a lone run. Adding to that, Garcia singled, doubled, walked, drove in a pair of runs and scored another while Phegley singled in a pair on an 0-2 count with the bases loaded during a four-run, eighth-inning rally.

Quote of the Day

Semien on his debut (via Colleen Kane in the Trib):

“It was great to be a part of a close game with all those players out there I grew up watching. Derek Jeter, one of my favorite players growing up, (I) kind of interacted with him a couple of times. That was pretty cool. He just said, ‘Congrats,’ and kind of joked and said, ‘It’s that easy, huh?’ And then he just ran off. Pretty excited about that.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards (6:05 p.m., CT, CSN). Starters: LHP John Danks (4-11, 4.35) for the Sox, RHP Scott Feldman (4-4, 4.18) for the O’s.

Did You Know…

…that, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, the debuts of Johnson and Semien represented the first time two White Sox made their first major league appearances in the same starting lineup since Frank Thomas and Alex Fernandez did it on August 2,1990? Also, with Webb coming on in relief it was the first time three Sox players debuted in the same game since September 7,1999 when Josh Paul, Aaron Myette and Jason Dellaero appeared.
