Play(s) of the Day

The Sox fought back from a 3-0 deficit last night and came out on top, 4-3, on a 12th inning homer by Conor Gillaspie (No. 11) for a sweep of the Royals and a season-high sixth consecutive triumph…Starter Jose Quintana went seven solid innings, allowing three runs, four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts…The bullpen–Matt Lindstrom (0.2 innings), Donnie Veal (0.1), Nate Jones (2.0), David Purcey (0.1), Jake Petricka (0.2) and Addison Reed (1.0)–was superb, tossing five innings of scoreless baseball.  Petricka got credit for the win in his first major league appearance while Reed recorded his 34th save and extended his club record with his sixth straight team save.

Quote of the Day

Petricka (pictured below), who made his major-league debut in the 11th and induced Salvador Perez to hit into an inning-ending double play with one out and the winning run in scoring position, explained the situation (courtesy of MLB.com):

“…You don’t have time to think when the game-winning run is at second. You just have to throw strikes.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Rangers at U.S. Cellular Field (6:10 p.m., CT, CSN/MLBN) in the seventh annual Civil Rights Game. Starters: LHP Hector Santiago (4-7, 3.27) for the Sox, RHP Yu Darvish (12-5, 2.68) for Texas. Activities surrounding the game included the Baseball & Civil Rights Movement Roundtable Discussion today and a youth baseball and softball clinic and MLB’s Beacon Awards luncheon, where Bo Jackson will be honored, tomorrow. Visiting dignitaries participating include Commissioner Bud Selig, Sharon Robinson, daughter of Jackie Robinson, Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Fergie Jenkins, former manager and MLB executive Joe Torre and Sox legends Minnie Minoso and Frank Thomas.

Here are some wise observations from today’s “roundtable” participants:

Ken Williams, Sox Executive Vice President

“If we don’t learn from the past…we’re not living with purpose. And everyone needs purpose.”

“That’s one thing we try to do at the White Sox–bring groups of young people out to the park and celebrate them.”

To Thomas Tull, chief of Legendary Entertainment: “There’s no telling how many kids you affected by making (42 – The Jackie Robinson Story).”

“Allowing kids in RBI programs to play in Major League stadiums gives them a taste of their potential futures.”

“A lot of young men don’t grow up in situations that allow them to have hope.”

Harold Reynolds, former major leaguer and MLB Network analyst

“Jerry Reinsdorf is constantly pushing the envelope in baseball.”

Wendy Lewis, Senior Vice President, Strategic and Diversity Alliances, MLB

“Within MLB, Jerry Reinsdorf led the conversation about being more strategic and doing more in their diversity approach.”

Did You Know…

…that Sox rookie pitchers Andre Rienzo and Petricka recorded their first major league victories on back-to-back nights–Rienzo on Wednesday, Petricka last night? It’s the first time that’s happened for the Sox since Fritz Ackley and Frank Kreutzer won their first big-league games on Sept. 27 and 28, 1963.

Remember When?

On this date in 1972, White Sox slugger Dick Allen became the fourth major-league player (Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg and Alex Johnson are the others) to homer into Comiskey Park’s centerfield bleachers. The mammoth two-run clout, which came off of the Yankees’ Lindy McDaniel, clinched a 5-2 Sox win.
