The Return of John Danks and a Fitting Tribute to the Chairman

Danks: “It’s Like Christmas Day”
 
After last night’s game Robin announced that John Danks, who is coming off four minor-league rehab outings, has been reinstated from the disabled list and will make his first start of 2013 against Miami Friday night at U.S. Cellular Field. 
 
Danks, who made nine starts in 2012 before having shoulder surgery last August, said he was excited and might have some butterflies because it’s been so long since he last appeared in the major leagues. He said his return is so special that it feels like Christmas Day.
 
To make room on the 25-man roster, the Sox optioned LHP Donnie Veal to Class AAA Charlotte.
 
A Special Time
 
It was an honor to be in New York last night to see Jerry Reinsdorf receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Sports Business Awards and to see the Sox and Bulls Chairman looking so proud with his son Michael, daughter-in-law Nancy and his grandchildren right beside him. 
 
Here are a few of the evening’s highlights and a link to a story by Richard Justice of mlb.com:
 
–Jerry joked during his speech that he thought so much of his daughter-in-law that if she ever decided to leave Michael, he was going with Nancy. The line, like many, drew laughs from the audience.
 
–It seemed strange to sit at a table with Sox GM Rick Hahn watching our game with the Red Sox on the MLB At-Bat app as the awards program was going on.
 
–Bulls GM Gar Forman asked jokingly if anyone had taken away Jerry’s phone for the night so that he wouldn’t be on it.
 
–The high point might have been a five-minute and 30-second video tribute done by MLB Productions’ Gary Waksman that featured interviews with Tony LaRussa, David Stern, Scottie Pippen, Michael Jordan, Paul Konerko and Bud Selig. It was narrated by Kenny Williams (if the day job doesn’t work out, Williams might have a future in voiceovers.).
 
–After the ceremony, several White Sox staffers headed to a nearby sports bar where the establishment was kind enough to throw the last two innings of our game onto one of the televisions. Alas, a great night couldn’t quite deliver a perfect ending.

Robin, having some fun with reporters when asked what he expects from John Danks’ start on Friday:
 
“A perfect game…27 strikeouts and a perfect game. (A no-hitter) would be acceptable.”
 
Play of the Day
 
Hector Santiago’s solid six-inning performance against the Red Sox last night after only three days of rest and a bullpen session the day before. He gave up just two runs and three hits while striking out nine and walking four.

…that Alex Rios’s sixth-inning single last night extended his hitting streak to 17 games, the longest in the major leagues this season? During the streak, Rios is batting .388 with seven doubles, a triple, four home runs, 13 RBI and 13 runs scored, including seven multi-hit games. The last Sox player to hit safely in as many games was Carlos Lee (28 games) in 2004.

The Streaks Continue
 
Alex Rios, with a single and run-scoring double last night, extended his consecutive game hitting streak to a career-high 16 games. Jesse Crain has now made 18 straight scoreless outings. He entered last night’s game in the seventh inning, relieving Jose Quintana with the bases loaded and one out and the Sox leading 2-0. All he did was strike out Will Middlebrooks and Stephen Drew to kill the rally.

Highlights: I’m happy to say that there are many from this afternoon’s win…The Sox scored nine runs, their highest total this season, on 14 hits…Adam Dunn hit two home runs (his eighth and ninth), a double and drove in five…Dayan Viciedo blasted his fourth homer of the year, had a single and drove in two…Jeff Keppinger also knocked in a pair on two hits, including a double…Alex Rios collected a triple and two singles and reached base with two outs and nobody on before both of Dunn’s homers…Conor Gillaspie had a pair of singles and scored a run…Starter Dylan Axelrod got credit for his first victory of the season in a gutty 5.1 inning performance, escaping jam after jam…Matt Thornton, Nate Jones and Brian Omogrosso pitched scoreless relief…The Sox defense was flawless.

Gordon said he is leaving today for his rehab assignment in Charlotte. Looks like he won’t be in the lineup until Saturday.

Jordan, just optioned to the Knights by the Sox, certainly had his brother’s back with a pair of hits, three RBI and an outstanding catch in centerfield in the 6- 4 win.

Sox GM Rick Hahn on the club’s early season performance. The bottom line? Keep the faith:

“We did feel going into the season that starting pitching was going to be one of our strengths and thus far it’s been tested, but it’s also been proven to be one of the strengths, which is nice…We have been disappointed the way things have started from an offensive standpoint and even defensively has been a little bit erratic and not up to the standards we set last year. That being said, we do have a fair amount of guys with some substantial track records behind them which gives you reason to believe that there will be some improvement back toward those career norms. We are talking about a team that last year was fourth in the league in runs scored and there’s no reason to believe that this permutation of that team with some improvements in some areas and a lot of the same personnel in others is going to wind up at the bottom of the league in runs scored. So we expect there to be a correction fairly soon, but thus far it’s been disappointing and it’s time to get going.

“…You always want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to try to push that magic button and make that move that’s going to solve whatever problem may be in front of you, whether it’s a health standpoint, or depth or the bench or as we just talked about, our  offense. You do have to try to let things unfold and give guys the chance to show their true colors and their true performance levels over an extended period of time. Obviously you don’t wait for that indefinitely and you don’t spend the whole summer just waiting around and hoping that things are going to get better. But this early on there’s still the expectation that guys are going to return to their previous norms.”

Jake Peavy, who missed his start last night due to back issues, said that he’s feeling better. He”ll get more treatment today and is hoping to pitch on Monday.
 
Getting Closer
 
John Danks took another step toward the major leagues last night in a rehab start with Class AA Birmingham. He pitched seven solid innings against Chattanooga, giving up two runs on five hits, striking out one and walking one. His velocity was between 84-87 and he hit as high as 91 mph later in the game.

Tyler Flowers’ three-run homer, his fourth blast of the season, proved to be the difference in the White Sox’s 3-1 victory last night, giving the Sox the series win in Texas. Hector Santiago, in for Peavy, pitched a strong 5.1 innings, allowing just one run, two hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Matt Lindstrom, Matt Thornton, Jesse Crain and Addison Reed finished it off with 3.2 scoreless innings. Reed recorded his 10th save in as many attempts.

Robin on the Sox winning their first road series of the year:
 
“Nobody’s easy, but these guys (the Rangers) are tough. We scratched Jake tonight, Hector fills in on short rest and does a great job. It’s a good way to start a road trip, especially how bad the last one was. Not only were we losing, but losing people.

Scheduling Update
 
The Friday, April 19 home game vs. the Twins, which was postponed, will be played as part of a split doubleheader on Friday August 9–at 1:10 and 7:10 p.m., CT.  The postponed Tuesday, April 23 game vs. the Indians at U.S. Cellular Field has been moved to Friday, June 28, and will be part of a straight doubleheader starting at 4:10 p.m., CT.

Casper Wells Joins Sox

On yesterday’s off-day the White Sox acquired righthanded-hitting outfielder Casper Wells from the Oakland A’s for cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, pitcher Leyson Septimo was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Wells, a four-year major leaguer who is a career .244 hitter with 25 homers and 80 RBI in 244 games, takes Blake Tekotte’s spot on the 25-man roster. Tekotte was optioned to Class AAA Charlotte after Sunday’s game.

In addition to the A’s, Wells has seen action with the Tigers and Mariners. Here’s what was waiting for him in his locker in Arlington:

Good Report

Dayan Viciedo, on the disabled list with a strained oblique, feels a lot better today. He took about 25 swings and didn’t have any pain.

Jordan Danks

Jordan was in the starting lineup tonight, but removed in favor of Dewayne Wise due to an inflamed bursa sac in his right knee. The lineup change was a precaution and Jordan is day-to-day.

His consecutive scoreless innings streak reached a career high of 18.2 IP before he gave up a run in the sixth…Jeff Keppinger collected a pair of hits and an RBI…Adam Dunn drew three walks.

WGN meterologist Tom Skilling, at the ballpark talking to fans on Weather Day, spent some time chatting with Conor Gillaspie before the game in the Sox dugout. The subject of the conversation? Conor’s interest in becoming a meterologist.

Supporting the Community in a BIG way
 
I’m proud to say that today we announced the Sox will be awarding charitable donations of $1.64 million for 2013.
 
Donations include $660,000 in grants to 29 Chicagoland non-profit groups through the White Sox Community Fund, a McCormick Foundation Fund. Additionally, Chicago White Sox Charities awarded grants totaling $119,500 to seven agencies providing services throughout the community.
 
White Sox Charities also made donations of nearly $861,000 to support the Sox’s urban baseball initiatives and to funding non-profit organizations such as City Year Chicago and the Jackie Robinson Foundation. 
 
This year’s grants, along with other charitable donations, moves the team’s total giving to more than $17 million since the inception of White Sox Charities in 1990.

Sox-Tribe Postponed

White Sox vs. Indians at U.S. Cellular Field has been postponed due to a forecast of rain throughout the evening. A makeup date and time will be announced at a later date. Fans should keep any game tickets and parking coupons for tonight’s game until a makeup date is determined. Any fans with tickets for tonight’s Dog Day festivities will be contacted by the Sox ticket office.
 
The Sox starting rotation moves back one day. Jose Quintana will go tomorrow against the Tribe and Chris Sale will face Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

In his last start on April 17 in Toronto, Quintana was credited with his first win of the season after throwing 6.2 scoreless innings in a 7-0 Sox victory. He allowed five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts while extending his consecutive scoreless streak to 13.2 innings. His career best is 16 straight, accomplished in June of last year.
