Barons One Game Away From Title

The Birmingham Barons, the Sox’s Class AA affiliate, are a game away from their first Southern League crown after defeating the defending champion Mobile BayBears, 8-2, last night in Mobile to take a two games to none lead in the best-of five championship series. Game 3 is set for tonight at Regions Field in Birmingham.

With a roster full of Sox prospects, the Barons were led by DH Trayce Thompson’s homer and two RBI, 2B Micah Johnson’s two hits and two runs scored and winning pitcher Chris Beck’s (pictured below) outstanding six innings of work, allowing just one earned run, six hits and two walks while striking out four.

Play(s) of the Day

Paulie hit his 11th homer of the season, a solo shot, and 433rd of his career in last night’s loss to the Indians. Konerko is batting. 339 with three doubles, two home runs and eight RBI over his last 16 games…INF Marcus Semien had a pair of hits, including his first major-league extra-base hit (a double)…Miguel Gonzalez recorded his first major league hit (a single) and Avisail Garcia added two singles. Avi is hitting .333 in his last 26 games, including 10 multi-hit efforts…Dylan Axelrod, with his 5.0 scoreless innings, made the longest relief outing of his career.

Quote(s) of the Day

I posted yesterday that rookies Semien and RHP Erik Johnson were among the players named to Baseball America‘s 2013 Minor League All-Star first team and were teammates on the University of California-Berkeley squad that made it to the 2011 College World Series.

Colleen Kane points out in today’s Trib that they were also roommates at Cal and played summer ball together in the Northwoods League in Minnesota as well as being drafted the same year (2011) and called up to the majors on the same day (September 3).

“We’ve been together through everything, actually,” Semien told Kane.“It’s pretty cool. If you have any questions, you can always go to him and ask because we’ve kind of gone through the same things. You don’t feel like you’re alone through this.”

Johnson added:  “It makes me comfortable when he’s out there playing behind me.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Indians at U.S. Cellular Field (6:10 p.m., CT, WGN). Starters: RHP Andre Rienzo (2-1, 4.50) for the Sox, RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (11-9, 3.62) for the Tribe. In his last start, against the Orioles, Andre collected his second career victory, allowing just one run and four hits in 6.2 IP.

Sox outfield prospect Trayce Thompson went 3-5, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three runs as the host Birmingham Barons took a two games to none lead in the Class AA Southern League North Division playoffs last night by defeating Tennessee (a Cubs affiliate), 7-1. Thompson homered and had an RBI single the night before in the Barons’ 3-1 triumph in Game 1 at Regions Field in Birmingham.

Pitching prospect Chris Beck got credit for the win with five scoreless innings. Fellow prospect Nestor Molina came on in relief with scoreless frames without allowing a hit.

Mitchell and Jacobs join RHPs Chris Bassitt, Stephen McCray and Kevin Vance, LHP Charlie Leesman and infielders Marcus Semien and Micah Johnson on the Glendale Desert Dogs.

Quote(s) of the Day

Conor Gillaspie, who visited Walter Reed Military Hospital yesterday with a group of his teammates (via Colleen Kane in today’s Tribune):

“If I get super frustrated about (baseball), I will go back and remember what those guys have been through. There are some really good guys, and how happy they are, how much they appreciated 10 minutes of our time — it makes you forget about all this (losing).”

Robin on versatile rookie Leury Garcia, who started at shortstop last night and will be in centerfield today:

“Just want to give him enough opportunity and let him move around.”

Play(s) of the Day

Paulie went 2-2 with a walk and Jeff Keppinger collected a pair of singles in the Sox’s 4-0 loss last night to Baltimore. Rookies Jake Petricka (1.2 IP) and Daniel Webb (1.0) pitched scoreless relief.

Pitchers Take BP

Despite very cool, call it cold, temps and a breeze, Sox pitchers took batting practice in advance of the team’s trip to face the Nationals in Washington, D.C. next week. Extra players also took early BP.
They Call it Work Ethic
Paul Konerko–despite needing only one hit to move into sole possession of third place on the franchise’s all-time hit list (he’s now tied with Frank Thomas at 2,156)–was working in the batting cage at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon, well before regular pregame batting practice started.

Speaking of PK
Paulie, a huge hockey fan, was in attendance at last night’s Blackhawks-Blues game at the United Center. Here’s Paulie talking baseball and pucks with Blackhawk legends Bobby Hull (left) and Denis Savard.

Against the Wind

Bob Seger fans are likely to spy a few Sox staff and players at the “Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band” concert at the UC tomorrow night. I wonder who will be dancing to “Night Moves.”

Quote of the Day

Robin on Paulie’s consistency and leadership qualities:
“He’s been a good hitter throughout his career, but to hold it up year after year after year takes a lot of discipline and talent. He’s always in the cage and always thinking about (hitting)…You have a guy like him and people see what he’s doing–and he’s always been that way. He is a leader and he doesn’t have to yell and scream. It’s by example and if he needs to say something he’ll say it.”

Play(s) of the Day
Two of the Sox’s four full season minor-league affiliates opened their seasons last night. Tyler Saladino and Trayce Thompson homered for Class AA Birmingtham in a 5-2 win at Montgomery…Kale Kiser went 4-5 with two doubles and four RBI for Class Kannapolis in a 9-2 victory at Lakewood. Class AAA Charlotte was rained out.

Tomorrow’s Schedule
White Sox vs. Mariners at U.S. Cellular Field (12:10 p.m., CT, CSN+). Probable starters are Dylan Axelrod for the Sox, Felix Hernandez for Seattle.

Did You Know…
…that the White Sox lead the American League and rank second in the major leagues with a 1.00 ERA (3 ER/27 IP) while the Sox bullpen is tied with the Dodgers for the major league lead with a 0.00 ERA?

Sox Still Unbeaten, Danks Takes a Step Forward and A.J. Sure Looks Different in Ranger Red, White and Blue

Today’s News

Sox 14, Rangers 8

The White Sox scored six runs in the third inning, assisted by five walks from Texas pitcher Cody Buckel, a Rangers error and a passed ball. Conor Gillaspie singled home two runs in the inning and Hector Gimenez drove in another with a single.  The Sox added five in the fourth highlighted by Gillaspie’s two-run triple, giving him four ribbies for the day, and RBI singles by Alex Rios and Andy Wilkins. Wilkins also singled in run No. 12 in the fifth. In the eighth inning Josh Phegley hit the lone Sox homer and Marcus Semien singled in the 14th and final run in the ninth. Starter Nestor Molina, who got credit for the win, and Brian Omogrosso each pitched two scoreless innings. Zach Stewart held Texas scoreless in 1 2/3 innings while striking out three.

Sox now stand at 2-0-2.

A Bit Surreal

As strange as it was to see A.J. Pierzynski in a Rangers uniform, batting cleanup against the White Sox today (he lined out and singled in his two plate appearances), it must have been equally as disorienting for A.J. to see Conor Gillaspie wearing No. 12  for the Sox.

In their first at bats, Dewayne Wise, Gordon Beckham, Rios and Adam Dunn were among those Sox who exchanged pleasantries with their former teammate, who was in his usual spot behind the plate.

Danks on Track

John Danks threw 50 pitches today in live BP–two groups of 25. Hitters included his younger brother Jordan, Gillaspie, Stefan Gartrell and Trayce Thompson. John seemed happy with his progress and said he has reached the point where he can focus on the pitching side of things instead of worrying about being healthy.

Danks is scheduled for a bullpen session on Friday and will make his Cactus League debut Monday against the Giants at Camelback Ranch. Here he is talking to the media after today’s outing:

A Good Sign

Brent Morel, attempting to come back after missing most of last season with a back injury, made a nice diving stop down the third base line in the bottom of the seventh inning to throw out the runner–alleviating some concerns about his health.

Also Healing

Two Sox who suffered minor injuries in the last few days, Leyson Septimo (leg) and Dayan Viciedo (arm), are good to go.

Quote of the Day

Asked if brother Jordan gives input on his progress, John replied, “Yeah, (we) talk. I think more of our conversations are me talking to him (about) what I would do if I were facing him. But certainly I’ll ask him today. I threw him a couple of front door cutters and change-ups and I want to know what he saw. (We) will talk.”

Play of the Day

Let’s give it to newcomer Gillaspie, who singled, tripled and drove in four. Wearing No. 12 with Pierzynski in the house turned out to be a good omen.

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Rangers at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (2:05 p.m., Chicago time). Simon Castro will start for the Sox vs. Alexi Ogando.

Did You Know…
