The Great Rivera

As future Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera takes his farewell tour around major league ballparks this summer celebrating 19 spectacular seasons, he has been showered with goodbye gifts and has met with groups of fans throughout baseball.

Last night, we presented Mariano with a framed scorecard from the first time he appeared at New Comiskey Park on July 4, 1995, a game in which he started; a photo collage from his save on September 19, 2001, following the 9/11 attacks eight days before; and a donation in his name to the Jackie Robinson Foundation. We also introduced Rivera at a pre-game session to a group of fans and Sox staff members who represent who the White Sox are. Here’s Scott Merkin’s story on whitesox.com:

Play of the Day

Chris Sale was in All-Star form last night, pitching a strong 7.1 innings while earning his seventh win of the season. He gave up just a first inning run and allowed only five hits while striking out six…Alejandro De Aza’s two-out, run-scoring double in the seventh drove in Gordon Beckhamwhich turned out to be the decisive run in the 3-2 victory.

Take a look at Sale’s performance and De Aza’s clutch hit:

Quote of the Day

A smiling Beckham commented on the usually slow-footed Paulie, who avoided hitting into a double play in the sixth by beating the throw to first, allowing the Sox to score the go-ahead run:

He works constantly on his speed, as we all know, and he blazed a trail down to first and got us the win. All kidding aside, that’s pretty gutsy for him to do that, because his back is probably not 100 percent. He’s gutting it out, and you’ve got to like that. That’s why he’s Paulie. We love him.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

Off-day.

On Friday, the White Sox and Twins will play a doubleheader. The extra game is a makeup contest that was originally scheduled for April 19, but postponed due to inclement weather.

Game 1 (1:10 p.m., CT, CSN)–Starters: LHP John Danks (2-9, 4.52) for the Sox, RHP Kyle Gibson (2-3, 6.69) for the Twins.

Game 2 (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN)–Starters: LHP Charlie Leesman will be making his big-league debut for the Sox, TBA for Minnesota.

Play(s) of the Day

Outstanding pitching and an offense that scored seven runs in the first three innings highlighted our 8-1 victory last night and ended the 10-game losing streak…Jose Quintana got credit for his sixth win of the season with an impressive 6.2 innings, allowing just one run and eight scattered hits along with five strikeouts…Alexei Ramirez and Alex Rios led the way offensively. Ramirez went 4-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Rios was 2-4 with four RBI, a walk and a run scored.

Here’s Alexei’s run-scoring double in the sixth inning that gave the Sox an 8-0 lead.

Quote of the Day

Robin on last night’s win:

“It starts with pitching and “Q’ was great…offensively it was just one of those (games) that just clicked. You get some balls that fall in and I can’t remember too many of the ones that just fall into the outfield for us, especially with guys on. So, it’s one of those that relieves a lot of the psyche or whatever of not knocking guys in. Guys are swinging, they’re taking ball four, it was just a good night offensively.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN) in the finale of the three-game series. Starters: LHP Hector Santiago (3-7, 3.28) for the Sox, LHP C.C. Sabathia (9-10, 4.78) for N.Y.

On the Bright Side

White Sox starters rank 4th in the American League with a 3.87 ERA. Their ERA has improved during the current losing streak.

Robin and the “Ryan Express”

Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the brawl between Robin Ventura and the Rangers’ Nolan Ryan on the mound in Texas.  In addition to making me – once again – feel old, I chuckled about my perspective on that moment.  I was traveling with the team on that trip and for some reason, I can’t quite remember why, I was asked to deliver an autographed Frank Thomas baseball to a young boy in the stands just over our dugout.  So I waited until a good time in the game to head down to deliver the gift.  The elevator at that old ballpark might have been the slowest ever – to go only one floor – and I recall walking down the stands looking for the right row and seat number.  All of a sudden, the crowd roared, I looked up just in time to see Robin reach Ryan.  The rest is photographic history.  I dropped off the ball, said a quick hello and dashed back upstairs to the press box to catch footage of the pitch and its result.

Last Opening Day in Texas, Ryan stopped by our clubhouse to shake hands with Robin.  My recollection of that meeting was that Nolan Ryan remains a big human being.  Big.

Play(s) of the Day

Despite getting his second straight no-decision in yesterday’s 3-2, extra-inning loss, Andre Rienzo was impressive in his second big-league start No. 2. He went six innings, giving up only two runs on four hits…With yesterday’s mammoth 475-foot solo homer, Adam Dunn passed Cal Ripken Jr. for 43rd place on the all-time home run list with his 432nd.  It was Adam’s 26th of the season and he added three singles for good measure. Furthermore, he is hitting .308 with 13 home runs and 36 RBI over the last 48 games and has raised his average from .156 to .226…Paul Konerko homered to tie the game at 2-2 in the ninth…And how about this catch by Gordon Beckham?

Quote of the Day

Outfielder Avisail Garcia on being traded to the Sox:

“I’m happy for the trade. This is a new opportunity for me to be here. I thank God for that. I’ve just got to keep playing hard and try to do something good for my team and help my team win games.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, WGN). Starters: LHP Chris Sale (6-11, 2.92) for the Sox, RHP Hiroki  Kuroda (10-6, 2.38) for New York.
