An Honor for the Ages

Mark Buehrle was an All-Star caliber pitcher, a beloved fan favorite and a consummate teammate who seemed to enjoy every moment of his dozen years in a White Sox uniform.

On Saturday at 12:15 p.m. before the scheduled 1:10 p.m. CT game with the A’s at Guaranteed Rate Field, Mark’s №56 will be retired ceremoniously alongside 10 other White Sox legends — Nellie Fox (2), Harold Baines (3), Luke Appling (4), Minnie Minoso (9), Luis Aparicio (11), Paul Konerko (14), Ted Lyons (16), Billy Pierce (19), Frank Thomas (35) and Carlton Fisk (72). The other retired number is Jackie Robinson’s 42, which was retired by Major League Baseball.

Buehrle’s big-league resume is clear evidence that there’s not much he didn’t accomplish and that he’s more than deserving of the honor.

In 12 seasons with the White Sox he won 161 games. In total, he was a 214-game winner in 16 seasons that included stints with the Marlins and Blue Jays. He pitched a perfect game, threw a no-hitter, was a World Series champion and earned a save in Game 3 of the 2005 Fall Classic. He tossed a complete-game victory in Game 2 of the ’05 American League Championship Series and chalked up a win that postseason in the second game of the American League Division Series. With the White Sox, he was a four-time All-Star (five in all) — earning the start and the win in the ’05 contest — won three Gold Gloves (four in all) and made nine Opening Day starts for The Good Guys. He also tossed 200 or more innings in 14 consecutive seasons and won 10 or more games in 15 straight years.

The jersey retirement ceremony will include special guests and video tributes that celebrate Buehrle’s career as a member of the White Sox. Among those who will be on hand to celebrate will be a group of Mark’s former Sox teammates: Joe Crede, John Danks, Jon Garland, Scott Podsednik, Frank Thomas and more.

Where to Watch and Listen to the Ceremony

The ceremony will be broadcast on CSN, WLS-AM 890 and WRTO 1200 AM Univision Radio as well as online at whitesox.com and on Facebook Live on the White Sox page. Be sure to congratulate Mark on social media by using the hashtag #MB56.
