Tonight’s Game

Sox Starting Lineup: De Aza CF, Beckham 2B, Abreu 1B, Dunn LF, Viciedo RF, Ramirez SS, Flowers C, Semien 3B, Noesi P.

Plays of the Day

Marcus Semien‘s 12th inning double broke the 1-1 deadlock last night as the Sox drew first blood in their quest for the Crosstown Cup with a 3-1 victory over the Cubs (click on top link below)…Semien’s two-bagger scored Alexei Ramirez, who had just singled for the 1,000th hit of his career and stole second…Although he chalked up another no-decision, Jose Quintana (click on bottom link below) was brilliant in his pitchers’ duel with Jeff Samardjiza. “Q” went seven innings, giving up just one run, three hits and three walks while striking out three…the bullpen came through as well. Ronald Belisaro (2.0 IP), Jake Petricka (1.0), Scott Downs (0.2), Daniel Webb (0.1) and Matt Lindstrom (1.0) held the Cub lineup scoreless the rest of the way. Webb, now 3-0, got the win while Lindstrom recorded his fifth save.

Mr. Clutch

Semien’s game-winner was his fourth go-ahead hit in the seventh inning or later this season. The first three were all home runs and amounted to his only hit of the night. Semien is also hitting .438 with one homer and 11 RBI with runners in scoring position and two outs and .316, 11 RBI with two outs.

Sox Enjoy 50th Win over Crosstown Rivals

Last night’s win gave the Sox their 50th victory over the Cubs and now lead the series, 50-45.

Ninth-Inning Thunder

The Sox lead the major leagues with 30 ninth-inning runs this season, nine more than second-place Oakland.

Wearing His Sox Cap with Pride

Bears’ offensive lineman Kyle Long is shown here having fun at Chuck E. Cheese with a young friend who he reached out to after the youngster was a victim of bullying. It’s interesting to note that Long, once drafted by the Sox as a pitcher out of high school, still has an allegiance to our Sox.

Quote of the Day

Alexei on his 1,000th major-league hit (via interpreter Lino Diaz)

“I’m very, very happy. That’s a good accomplishment. I couldn’t get to 1,000 hits in Cuba, and that was something I wanted to get to. It’s good that I got it here.”

Here’s Ramirez’s milestone hit:

Kyle Long: From Pitcher to Protector

Today, offensive lineman Kyle Long–son of Hall of Fame defensive lineman and broadcaster Howie and brother of Rams DL
Chris–stands as the No. 1 draft pick of the Bears out of the University of Oregon. Five years ago, he was a lefthanded pitcher who reached 97 mph and was promising enough to be selected by the Sox in the 23rd round of the June draft. Instead of signing a pro contract, Kyle went to Florida State on a baseball scholarship and then ultimately turned to football.

The White Sox rank second in the American League with a 3.20 ERA overall and a 2.38 mark at home…the bullpen leads the A.L. with a 2.04 ERA and a .180 opponents average…Nineteen of the White Sox’s 21 games this season have been decided by three runs or less…the Sox are tied with the A’s, Mariners and Rays starting staffs for the most quality starts in the A.L. Rays’ manager Joe Maddon on Sale:

“He’s tough. He’s got good stuff, he’s got that slider and changeup off the fast ball and a tough angle to work from. He pitched well…(Sale) is going to make a lot of teams look sluggish. He’s really good, he’s really good.”

…that Jeff Keppinger, who is out of the lineup tonight with a back spasm, has had quite a productive week? He collected two hits in each of his last three games (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday), had an RBI and a run scored in each of the last two contests and drove in a pair of runs last Sunday.
